My Joseph Clayton ( May 26,1806 - Nov 29,1969) seems to have appeared out
of thin air..... he married Ruth Roberts( daughter of Richard and Elizabeth
Doty Roberts) July 15,1828 in Washington or Scott Co VA. . They migrated to
Hancock Co IN ( which is the county west of Marion Co IN) . Their children
were; Sarah Margaret , Mary V , Richard, Henry R, Harriet E, Emeline, James L,
Nancy C, Issac W, Martha, and John Andrew Jackson Clayton (my gggrandfather)
I've been searching for years and the proverbial brick wall still stands,
Any help would be appreciated, thanks !
Interesting, my family also hails from this part of the country. I'll talk
with my mother to see if she recognizes any of the names you mentioned. Hope
to have an answer for you soon.
R. M. Clayton
YES!!
I believe this Charles Canaday (my great-grandfather was Charles M. C
and he died when I was 14 - so have photos of him and
great-grandmother holding me as a baby.
Where did the Sumner's end up - did they go on with the Canaday's
into Tennessee and Indiana? This great-grandfather did a family
history - it follows pretty much what Bill Putnam has on his website
though not as extensive.

I'm looking for Claytons who migrated down to Georgia. Some of mine were
born in GA. in the 1700's.
Then maybe some of them are connected to your line of Claytons
Richard
I'm a novice at this so please bear with me:
I lose my Clayton line with my ...
Father: James Edward Clayton b. 1921 in Gadsden, AL, d. 1998 in Centre, AL
Grandfather: Andison Cornelius Clayton, b 1885 in Etowah Co, AL, d. 1954 in Gadsden, AL
GGF: Charles Alexander Clayton, b. 1845 in DeKalb Co, AL, d. 1918 in Etowah Co, AL
GGGF: Joseph Clayton, b. 1817 in South Carolina, d. 5/3/1885 in Etowah Co, AL, married Jennie Pettit, b. 1820 in Spartanburg, SC, d. 12/10/1899,
My GGGGF: (?) Clayton, married a (Tabitha?) Brashears from SC I think, descended from Brashears in Maryland.
Can anyone help me tie in more?
Thanks,
Jim Clayton
Joan, are you on line?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seemingly I am descended from this William Clayton too. It seems that he
married Prudence Lanckford in St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex, England
on Nov. 7, 1653.This is recorded in the Parish Register as, "William son of
William Clayton of this parish and Prudence Lanckford of Peter the
Less(Parish),
daughter of William Lanckford of Groughton, Hampshire"..It goes on to say
that Prudence was born in Surry in the early 1630s. She was the daughter of
William Lanckford originally from Broughton Parish, Hampshire. The person
writing this info. goes on to say that a number of early genealogies show her
last
name as Mickles. A Louis Jones, on one of his many trips to England,
determinded she was a Lanckford. She may have been married first to a man
named
Mickles who died shortly thereafter. William was a carpenter by trade and had
joinded the recently established Quaker religion. You probably know the story
about how he came to America to act as a commissioner for William Penn, in
order to clear any Indian titles to land that Penn had acquired near what is
Burlington, New Jersey near Pennsylvania. The Clayton family probably arrived
in the period around 1689 to 1885. It would seem that Prudence died ater 1690
in Chester County.
I tie in through the Beals family on down to Bryant Teague. Just thought I
would get in touch and give you this bit of info, in case you didn't already
have it.
Sincerely,
Joan Dowdy
Mike Thorne: Sory to say I have not found your Jane (Clayton) (Hart).I have
looked through everything I have on the Claytons several times. If I do come
across her I will certianly let you know - regards - Lorraine.
Lorraine (or anyone)
Would anybody have a Jane Clayton who married a William Hart around 1758
(probably in Pa)? Jane may not have been a Clayton, but was married to a
Clayton first, then married William Hart. William was born in 1717 and
died 1799 in what is now Fulton Co, Pa -- just a couple of miles north of
the Md. border and the Potomac River. Any help or clues would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, Mike Thorne mhthorne(a)juno.com

Kathy: There are indeed 3 Zebulon Claytons here. Zebulon
Clayton first appearing .,as the 4th generation that I have starting with

Ann Kendry b. 11 nov.1768 d.29 June 1844 . Zebulon had 2 more brothers,
John the 3rd., and Joel. The 2nd wife of Zebulon after Mary
Hartshorne died was Elizabeth b. bet.1726 -1795 and they had a son John Jr... so
this John then married Hanna Compton b. abt. 1726 d. after 1801. their

oct.1836. Ann, Hannah and Thomas were the next three children of John and

haven't confused you. Just write it down bit by bit and it should fall into
line. There is another Zebulon to tell you about but, I will leave it here
for now and take up where I left off if it is of any help to you, let me know
