Re: [CLAYTON] Off Subject

This message is a little old, but I just read it today. In researching
my Mother's line we've met 'genuine' cousins from Virginia to
California. Everyone has been so kind and helpful. Just as you have,
many have opened their homes to us. Some have met us in our hotel
rooms. And others, at restaurants. I would say that anyone who was a
'genuine' cousin with no ulterior motives would be happy to meet any
where and not be offended. So away from your home is safe thinking.
Local libraries and genealogical societies are also great places to meet
and view items on file.

Just an idea to share --
1) For a scam artist, it would be easy to go on line and get all kinds
of data on a famimly, then call someone posing as a cousin... complete
with all this data to talk about that they just downloaded off the web.
In other words, it would be very easy to pose as yours or anybodys far
distant cousin so maybe we'll see more of these in the future --
2) With what happened, I asked myself what should I do if I get a call
like that and a cousin pops out of the woodwork and just happens to be
passing through town. The best thing I could think of would be to say
that "today's not a good day to come over to the house but let me grab
my stuff and I'll meet you at the Wendy's (or IHOP or Applebee's) at
the corner of..." Go meet them in a public place and share your
information. If they really appear genuine AND somebody you would
invite into your home, set the invite up for the next day. Don't get
sucked in by a "we don't mind a mess" and "we'd love to see those old
family pictures." Either take those to Wendy's in the first place or
show them off the next day.
I suppose this might work but I'd be real curious as to whether or not
there are any other ideas out there.

So sorry that these folks did that to you. All you can say is "Be
Careful when you have strangers in your home" Most genealogy folks I
have met over the years are as they seem, but so many mean folks in
the world anymore. I really hate dishonest people and liars are at
the top of that list.
