Greetings, Doug!
I do indeed have both pension apps. Thanks so much for the lead,
however! It was from the pension apps that I obtained his death date and
was able to narrow his birth year. Those pension apps are sometimes a
wealth of information- his even contained letters written by his third
wife (Kitty) and his brother, both trying to get reimbursed for funeral
expenses. It was quite a show down between the two that makes for some
mighty interesting reading.
thanks for the time you spent looking them up,
Agehya

Are you sure Cynthia was his first wife? Here's a listing from the 1860
Hopkins Co, TX census. This Jessie F. Clayton was about the right age but
his birthplace is given as Arkansas:
1860 Hopkins Co, TX census, Beat #3, Charleston Post Office
1006-983 Jessie F Clayton 22 M - Laborer On Farm - 175 Arkansas
- Malinda J Clayton 20 F - - - - Illinois

Hi Sylvia:
Have you found a Death Certificate for Wiley Clayton?
If he died after 1914, he should have one (early years, compliance was
spotty). Sometimes they're madding incomplete other times a gold mine of
information.
I found Servilla in the 1930, widow, alone. so he apparently died before
that.

Greetings, all! I'm new to this list and hope someone can assist me.
I am seeking information on John Jessie Franklin Clayton, who was born
in Missouri between 1827 and 1840 (he is shown as 40 years old in the
1880 Census, but the blurred text on his tombstone has been interpreted
as around 1827). He then moved to Hopkins County, Texas and married
Cynthia Ann Dawson on Oct 19, 1863. They had several children: William
Jasper (born 1865 in Hunt County, TX), Missouria (born about 1864), J.P.
"Jonothen" (born about 1868), Jessie R. (born about 1871), and Mary E.
(born about 1879). I suspect that John may have been born in or near
Hickory County, Missouri because his wife lived there with her parents
in 1850 (parents: John Dawson and Martha Richards).
He and his wife are listed in 1880 Census as born in Missouri, but their
first child was born in Hunt County, Texas. He served in the Civil War
(D 34 Tex Cav CSA). He enlisted March 6, 1862 in Pine Creek, TX. He used
the name Jessie Clayton on his first marriage certificate and served as
Jesse F. Clayton and Jessey F. Clayton in the Confederate Army. He is
listed as Jesie Clayton in the 1880 Census.
His second marriage was to Catherine Fulfer on Dec 6, 1899 in Hunt
County, Texas. He died in Hunt County on April 29, 1920.
Here's a summary of the milestones I have been able to nail down about him:
~1837-40: born in Missouri (maybe Hickory Co, since wife there in 1850)
1863: married Cynthia Ann Dawson in Hopkins County, TX
1880: living with wife and kids in Hunt County, TX
1899: married 2nd wife (Kitty Fulfer) in Hunt County, TX
1900: living with 2nd wife (Kitty) in Delta County, TX
1910: living with 2nd wife (Kitty) in Hunt County, TX
1920: died Wolfe City, Hunt County, TX
He is one VERY elusive Clayton ancestor. I have been working on him for
a couple of years. I haven't even been able to get a death certificate
for him because the state of Texas says they can't find it (but they
kept my payment as a search fee...).
He was buried in a family plot with an infant, Johnnie Clayton, who died
Aug 16, 1889 and is listed as the "son of W.J." That he is buried with
an infant that could not be his indicates that the infant may belong to
his brother or other close relative. John Jessie's son (William Jasper
Clayton) used the initials W.J., but he was only 4 years old when the
infant Johnnie died. I have suspected that John Jessie's father or uncle
was named "W.J." or William Jasper due to the shared burial plot (and
that John Jessie likely named his son after the senior W.J.).
Does anyone have any information that might help me in my search? I
would love to nail down his birthdate and parents. Any of ya'll Clayton
cousins of mine?
thanks all,
Agehya
I really appreciate the help Ive been given in my search for information on Nannie Lee (Mayfield) and Wiley Clayton. Heres what I know at this point.
Wiley Clayton was married twice so Nannie Lee, born 1877, is either the daughter of his previous wife or another. Servilla and Wiley were married about 1885. Their first son Edward was born 1886. Edward has not been found anywhere on the census. Knowledge of him as well as a daughter Sallie who died in infancy, came down from the family. The only evidence of him is in the 1900 census where Nany is shown instead of Edward with his birth date and age, an error apparently made by the census taker.
I found a Henderson Clayton in the 1860 census with a son Wiley but the date was 5 years off. The wifes name was Mercy, and Wiley named two of his children Henderson and Merzzie so there still could be some connection. Family shows James C. Clayton as his father, nfi. Ive not been able to confirm any record of him.
Wiley is first found in NC in the 1870 Census in Woodsdale, Person, NC at the age of 21, showing his birth in NC but this may be a different Wiley as most other census records shows him born in TN. However, in the 1900 census, his children all show their father was born in NCin 1910 however it all show TN as his birth place and also Servilla. 1900 shows Servilla was born in NC as well as her father--mother in TN.
Known movements of family were from Arkansas, Hot Springs Co., Fenter Twp. where they lived in 1900. Son Henderson is shown born in TN abt. 1888, and Merzzie and Jim are shown as born in AR in 1889 and 1892. They are next found in 1910 census in Carter Co., Lone Grove Twp., having moved between 1892 and 1910.
Ive not had any luck finding anyone in the 1880 census.
Nannie Lee married Britton ONeal and is shown in the 1900 census in AR, Hot Springs Co., Miller Twp., the same county as the Claytons, showing her father born in TN and mother in NC, with sons Leonard and Clarence. Daughter Brittie Mae was born later.
I was informed of a WWI draft registration for a William Henderson Clayton from McAlister, OK, born in Sweet Water, TN, and the 1891 voters list for Monroe Co., TN have both a Wiley Clayton and Henderson Clayton.
Family hearsay is that Nannie Lee was part Cherokee and that her maiden name was MAYFIELD and that she lived with the Claytons, possibly adopted. She might have been brought into the family to help with the children etc.
Anyone know how to obtain marriage records for Wiley? Nothing was found in Monroe Co., TN. I am of course desirous of how to find info. on the Mayfields and the Cherokees in order to locate her family. Whatever help you can give would be appreciated.
Sylvia Burnside
Hi folks - Sweetwater, Tn would have had Cherokee Indians living there. I
have one in
one of my lines - though not a Clayton.

Just a side note. I, too, descend from George Clayton, 1723-1786. My great
grandfather was John Wiley Clayton born March 5, 1836 in Buncombe County,
North Carolina. He later lived in Bartow County, Georgia, Orlando, Florida, and
Atlanta, Georgia. He died April 18, 1909, and is buried in Euharlee, Bartow
County, Georgia.
Another person in our family tree with the name Wiley was James Wiley
Clayton, born March 2, 1823 in North Carolina, and died Jan. 19, 1909. He was the
son of John Clayton, born December 31, 1785 in Rowan County, North Carolina,
and died August 20, 1868, in Transylvania County, North Carolina, and, his
wife, Susannah Wetzel, born November 15, 1787 in Lincoln County, North
Carolina, and died September 26, 1872, in Transylvania County, North Carolina.
The Wiley name was carried on by my grandfathers brother, George Alexander
Clayton, born, March 23, 1857 in Euharlee, Bartow County, Georgia, and died
January 26. 1924, in Atlanta, Georgia, when he named his son Joel Wiley Clayton.
The name Wiley has also been spelled Wylie.
I hope I did not confuse the issue. We have any number of lines that we
have not been able to follow. The name Wiley/Wylie is in our family. I do not
know where it came from, but I suspect it was a family name somewhere in the
past. I don't know if that ties our Clayton families together or not. I suppose
the only way to untangle some of these complicated relationships will be
through DNA testing. Has this Clayton list been involved in testing? Are any of
you interested? It might be a good idea.
Margie Clayton Klein
I've done some looking for your Wiley Clayton. Here's what I've found so

There's a World War I draft registration for a William Henderson Clayton
from McAlister, OK that looks to be your Henderson Clayton. It says he was
born in Sweet Water, TN. The writing is horrible but that is apparently what
it says. There's a Sweetwater in Monroe Co, TN. The 1891 voters list for
Monroe Co, TN has both a Wiley Clayton and a Henderson Clayton on it.

Sorry there's a typo in this: George Clayton was born in 1723 and died in
1786 in Rowan County, NC.

Hi Sylvia:
In order to see if I can help you I need to know some more information:
In what location did you find this family?
Beginning what date and if they moved the dates and locations that you found
them.
do you know where this Wiley was born - even the state will help.
Do you know where this couple was married?
How did you arrive at the possible parents?
I search a Clayton family that has the given name "Wiley"; however when I
did a search just now I found a wide variety of locations for "Wiley Clayton"
Very early on, prior to 1700, there were three, possibly four, maybe
unrelated Clayton families. Sometimes one can make a guess as to who belonged to
which Clayton family by location and name.
As for a possible adopted Cherokee child, first you've got to establish that
this family was in an area where they would have come in contact with the
Cherokees. For instance I found a Wiley Clayton in Person County, NC in 1880,
that is in central NC. Would they have had contact with the Cherokees? I
don't know. On the other hand someone in Jackson County, NC, which is in
western NC, might. Or in Oklahoma or in some of the states between western NC and
Oklahoma might.
My guess is that your Wiley doesn't belong to the Clayton family (I
research) who are descendants of George Clayton (1823- 1826) of Rowan County, NC
since I don't recognize any of the information that you give. However, one never

I am a newcomer on the list.
Here;s the family I'm researching:
Wiley Clayton b. abt 1850 m. to Servilla/Savilla - children: Nannie Lee
(Mayfield)
Edward, Henderson, Merzie, John, James and Sallie, who died in infancy.
Poss. parents: Henderson & Mercy Clayton
Please let me know if you have info. on this family. Nannie (b.1877) is
believed to be part Cherokee who was adopted, according to family hearsay. Does
anyone have knowledge of how to locate family history on the Cherokees? My
email is:
sylviaburnside(a)sbcglobal.net.

Where were they?

I'm trying, once again !! , to find parents and siblings of my Joseph
Clayton b May 26,1806 possibly Wayne Co VA, he married Ruth Roberts ( daughter of
Richard and Elizabeth Doty Roberts) July 15, 1828 in Abingdon, Washington Co,
VA , they traveled to Hancock Co IN approx 1840, Joseph died Nov 29,1869
in Hancock Co IN.
Their children were; Mary V, Richard, Henry R, Harriet E, Emeline, James
L (who moved to Center,MO after the Civil War), Nancy Catherine, Issac W,
Martha, Sarah Margaret, John Andrew Jackson Clayton( my direct line).
I have exhausted all resources !! I'm hoping James L Clayton who moved to
Center, MO may have had offspring that someone is researching. Why did James
migrate to MO ? Was there family there??
Any help would be appreciated ...Thanks !
Dear Bob:Our Clayton line did not go into the U.S.A., that is our direct
line. Cousins no doubt are there, coming directly from England to the U.S.A.
years ago. I've not ever seen a name like Zephaniah in any of my
work with the Claytons but, we have Tylers even to-day in our line,in fact my
Mom's sister was married to one in England. I have not seen Tylee though.
Our line goes such: William
Clayton, married(Mary Tovey) in Wick Castle, England 1783. Next generation-William
Clayton( christened 1788 Wick,England,(married Elizabeth Daniel) Next
generation- Joseph Clayton christened Broughton, 1819, England,(married Ann
Savage) Next Generation - Job Clayton(my Grandfather) christened 1851
Broughton, England,(married Elizabeth Key). Next generation Thomas
James Clayton(my Dad) born 1883 Chadbury, Norton , Worcestershire, England,
(married Alice Jessie Jones) Maybe this might be of some help to you
or others reading it. Regards -----Lorraine, Ontario. Canada
Lorraine,
In your Family Tree, have you spotted Zephaniah or Tylee (Tyler)
CLAYTON?

Hi KC: I got your e-mail and my Dad's name was Thomas James Clayton born in
Worcestershire, England in 1883, and came to Toronto Ontario in 1912. He came
with all his brothers, George, Ernest, Charles, Joseph and Samuel. All the
sisters stayed behind in England and never moved to Canada. These brothers
were all grown men and some were married and some not. They all settled in
Toronto , Ontario, Canada, except Samuel who was a Policeman in the British Army
and he returned to Kent, England, and remained a policeman until he retired.
I know where Blenheim Ontario is and I know it is in Kent County.
I don't know of any of our line going there but, that does not mean it did
not happen. Do you have any other information at all on your line of Claytons?
I do have our family tree back to the mid 1700 in England and there are
stemming from William Clayton. Keep in touch and maybe I can be of some help,
somehow. Regards - Lorraine.
You didn't say where your Thomas Clayton and wife Mary
Ann (Blackburn) were born. That would be helpful since I too am an
(Ontario,
Canada ) Clayton, and maybe can help in some way.
Hi Lorraine,
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, the only
information I have on my family is what I did provide in email. All I know is
that "my" Thomas and Mary Ann (Blackburn) Clayton were born in "English
Canada" and are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Blenheim, Kent County,
Ontario, Canada.
If it may help, my Thomas & Mary Ann had three boys... John Thomas, Edwin
Arthur and Leslie Melvin Clayton. John Thomas & Leslie Melvin are also buried
in Evergreen Cemetery with their parents and spouses. Edwin Arthur Clayton,
my Great-Grandfather, moved on to CA, where he passed in 1952.
Sound familiar?
KC
Hi: KC Bolton-Potter: You didn't say where your Thomas Clayton and wife Mary
Ann (Blackburn) were born. That would be helpful since I too am an (Ontario,
Canada ) Clayton, and maybe can help in some way. - regards - Lorraine.
