Barton Bartholomew CLAYTON
Born: possibly in England
Married: ? WALKER
Children:
Ann Clayton (1790 - 1873); m. Philip ULLMAN
Sara Clayton
(male) Clayton
No Barton or Bartholemew Clayton shows up in any census. Samuel
Clayton (1800 Census, Chester Co., Londongrove), has the right mix of
people (10010-11011), plus there is a Samuel Walker (10520-04020) on the
same page. However, a Samuel Clayton is supposed to be a son of Joshua
Clayton. Ann Ullman's 1870 census entry indicates both of her parents
were foreign born, consistent with the Bible information but not with
being part of the large Clayton family in the Philadelphia area.
Supporting Information
- Census 1850 PA, Chester Co., Phoenixville: Jane Clayton, age 30, is
listed on same page as Lewis Ullman, s/o Philip Ullman.
- Bible of Uriah Ullman: "Ullman side. My Great Grandfather Ullman
came from Germany. Great Grandmother Ullman's father Barton Bartholomew
Clayton came from England & settled in Phila. & married a Miss Walker. 3
children from issue, Ann, Sara, Boy. Ann Married Philip Ullman who came
from Germany."
- Christ Church, Philadelphia 16 Jun 1772: marriage of Thomas Clayton
and Mary Walker
Kathy,
Thank you for the information. As yet I don't know anything about these
Claytons. I was told that my Mary Clayton has two brothers, David and
William and that their father was Zebulon. The Elizabeth Township, Allegheny
Co., Pa. 1830 census confirms my Mary Clayton Hall now widowed was living
near her brother David. William is there also. The letter I have received
noting Mary's father and brothers sated that the there were 3 Zebulon
Clayton's and the one in Freehold served in the Revolutionary War. Am I
positive this is the correct Zebulon who was the father of my Mary Clayton
Hall. Of course I'm not. Until I see the information and study it with the
hope of finding my connection Hall line will I know for sure I'm in the
right location. Couple that with the states boundaries back then some times
I don't know where I should be looking.
I do appreciate the information and will add it to my file in hopes of
confirming a connection. If your books say anything about a Mary Clayton
marring a John Hall of the Rehoboth, Mass. Hall line I sure would love to
know more.
Thanks again,
Roberta Hall

Roberta, my Clayton ancestor, Elisha Clayton, along with his twin Elijah,
brothers Noah and Job, and a possible sister Euphemia,
was also from Freehold Township in Monmouth Co.
These brothers also served in the Revolution, and the three oldest
were prisoners of the British in New York.
Serving in the Revolution would make them of the same generation
as the Zebulon you mention, and they could possibly have been cousins.
A descendant of Elisha had submitted to a Marion Co., WV history
(where Elisha settled when, of course, it was still in VA) that their parents
were David and Sarah Carter Clayton, but I have never been able
to find documentation myself to substantiate this.
Doing some more checking I found that this is also stated in
_Genealogy of One Branch of the Family of Clayton
in England and America 1066 to 1960_ by Lulu Irene Waters Hare,
Washington, D.C. 1960, and was also accepted as correct in the
1966 _DAR Patriot Index_ (p137), though I don't know whether
the DAR would accept this as sufficiently well proved now.
I need to follow up on both of these to see what evidence
is given for David and Sarah Carter Clayton
as the parents of this Clayton family.
In Raymond Martin Bell's NJ Claytons book, on his chart on p.ii,
he placed these Clayton sons as the children of Thomas Clayton,
the son of a John Clayton, though he does state that
this was speculation on his part.
(Elsewhere I have seen stated that this Thomas's wife was named Elizabeth.)
However, Teresa Klaiber wrote to me that, in Dr. Bell's
1983 _Some New Jersey Families_, p9, he had placed them
as the sons of William, possible son of Thomas, son of [an earlier] Zebulon.
I have not seen a copy of that book myself.
The other NJ Clayton book I have is Teresa Klaiber's _Clayton Connections:
A Researcher's Guide to New Jersey Clayton Ancestors_, 1984.
She very wisely only transcribed the records and left speculation
on their meaning and connections to us.
If there are other NJ Clayton books besides these
in the NJ State Library in Trenton, I would be very interested
in learning about their titles and authors.

My CLAYTON line starts in Georgia, late 1700's. I think all of the Claytons
are probably related, but a lot of missing links.

Hello Roberta,
Nice to hear from you. Wish I could be of help to you but my line of
Claytons are from N. Carolina and then migrated to Tennessee. I do have a friend that
is a Clayton researcher that lives in Tennessee that has been in touch with
other researchers for Claytons in New Jersey. She may be of help to you. Mary
Nell Franks of Lawrenceburg, Tenn. _Cherokee@Usit,net_
(mailto:Cherokee@Usit,net) I feel sure she will be assistance if possible.
Harold
Harold,
You seem to know a bit about these Clayton's and I wondered if I could pick
your brain?
I am researching my Hall family history and I know my John Hall was born in
1807 somewhere in New Jersey. John also had a sister (one that I know of) b.
1809 also in New Jersey.
Recently I found out that my John and Ann Hall's mother may have been Mary
Clayton. I have information that Mary and her brother's David and William
came from New Jersey to the Pa area. A copy of a letter was given to me
written possibly by an Addison Grove Clayton to his father Samuel which
talks about his father William. This William Clayton was born in New Jersey
on the 10th day of August, 1796. The letter goes on to say that William,
David and Mary's father was a Zebulon Clayton. This Zebulon Clayton it is
written server in the Revolution War and near the close of the war married a
Miss Mary Gorden.
Can you tell me if this family shows up in Monmouth Co. It is said that
Zebulon was from Freehold, New Jersey.
I know it's a long shot but I'm trying to piece together and area where my
John Hall was born and who his parents were. John and Ann were both born in
New Jersey and I know there mother's name was Mary (Clayton) Hall.
I could use your help if your willing or have any knowledge of these
families.
Thanks,
Roberta Hall
