Like everybody else Ive got the proverbial BRICK WALL, but is it any wonder
that we cant find some of our ancestors. Not because poor handwriting by the
enumerator or bad transcription of a census but because they never told the
truth.
A classic example is my LONSDALE line. My Gt. Gt. Grandfather married a
widow with 2 daughters from Brighton in 1864. By the time we get to the 1871
census theyve had 2 sons and 2 daughters so in the 1871 census for Kilburn
we should see
Ruth and Elizabeth with the surname CLAYTON
Ellen and Alice, Thomas and Henry with the surname LONSDALE
But in fact all 6 children are shown as LONSDALE.
When we get to the 1881 census My Gt. Gt. Grandfather is dead and the
children are all still LONSDALEs expect for Ruth who has married a Charles
LAWRANCE from Sheffield.
Also living in the house is a lodger and his son named LAITHWAITE from
Upholland.
I the 1891 census Ruths husband is dead but she has 2 sons and they along
with the lodgers son and all the other children are named LONSDALE.
By the time we get to the 1901 census some of the children have married and
moved away but now my Gt. Gt. Grandmother has married the lodger Mr
LAITHWAITE and would you believe it there isnt a LONSDALE to be seen
anywhere, they are all LAITHWAITEs including Ruth and her 2 sons by Charles
LAWRANCE.
If you cant find the person youre looking for you may have to go back
further or come forward to find the common denominator to help you sort out
whos who.
If you think youve got the right family but the names dont fit do some
more digging to see if there has been a 2nd or 3rd marriage and all the
names have followed on from the head of household.

Roberta, tried to answer directly, no luck. My Claytons were all in
England but there were tons in states,. Virginia, Pennsyvania. I will look on my
chart for any that may have been born in England., send names and date of
birth. Nancy
Michael, If you send me the name of the Clayton whose widow married your
Lonsdale, I will try to see if he is on my chart. Nancy Praetzel, Kentfield,
CA
Hi, I'm new to this list but subscribe to many others and run a couple of my
own.
Does anybody on the list have connections with Yorkshire c1840, Brighton in
Sussex c1881 and Bolton, Lancashire c1900?
My Alice Barlow Lonsdale married a David Thomas Clayton in Bolton in October
1898. David was born in Brighton Sussex and can be found there with his
parents in the 1881 census. David's father was born in Yorkshire and his
mother was born in Bolton.
David and Alice had a daughter named Florence Ruth born 1900 who I believe
later married Albert PRICE in Bolton in 1922/23
