Hi list ...
I am looking for information on a Jane Clayton who married a William Hart
around 1758.
My earliest ancestor was William Hart (b ca 1717 - d 1799 in Bedford [now
Fulton] Co, PA) and I suspect my William is the one who married Jane.
Here is what I KNOW about William and what I SUPPOSE about him. (Please
don't pass on my guesswork as fact!)
I KNOW:
- he had a least 7 children between about 1750 and 1769.
- his 1st 4 children were born between 1750 and 1756
- his last 3 children were born between 1763 and 1769
I SUSPECT:
this suggests he was married twice.
I KNOW:
- that a William Hart and Jane Clayton were married in Philadelphia in
1758.
- per land records of 1789, my William and "his wife Jane" sold land in
Bedford [now Fulton] Co, PA, to one of their sons. (But, was this Jane
Clayton or another Jane?)
I KNOW:
- from a land warrant of 1767 that William was making improvements on
land in Bedford County by 1760.
I SUSPECT: (really, just guess work)
William and a first wife were married around 1749 and that she died in
1756 or 57. He then remarried.
If anyone can help me with either William Hart OR Jane Clayton, I would
greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Mike Thorne mhthorne(a)juno.com
Seemingly I am descended from this William Clayton too. It seems that he
married Prudence Lanckford in St. Pancras Parish, Chichester, Sussex, England
on Nov. 7, 1653.This is recorded in the Parish Register as, "William son of
William Clayton of this parish and Prudence Lanckford of Peter the Less(Parish),
daughter of William Lanckford of Groughton, Hampshire"..It goes on to say
that Prudence was born in Surry in the early 1630s. She was the daughter of
William Lanckford originally from Broughton Parish, Hampshire. The person
writing this info. goes on to say that a number of early genealogies show her last
name as Mickles. A Louis Jones, on one of his many trips to England,
determinded she was a Lanckford. She may have been married first to a man named
Mickles who died shortly thereafter. William was a carpenter by trade and had
joinded the recently established Quaker religion. You probably know the story
about how he came to America to act as a commissioner for William Penn, in
order to clear any Indian titles to land that Penn had acquired near what is
Burlington, New Jersey near Pennsylvania. The Clayton family probably arrived
in the period around 1689 to 1885. It would seem that Prudence died ater 1690
in Chester County.
I tie in through the Beals family on down to Bryant Teague. Just thought I
would get in touch and give you this bit of info, in case you didn't already
have it.
Sincerely,
Joan Dowdy

As promised: Canaday/Cannaday: www.BillPutman.com
Go to the site.... scroll down and click on 'Canaday and Related
Families'
scroll down again and under Maryland Families you will see the
Clayton name.... if I remember correctly - he takes the Clayton name
back to 1300 or 1400's - back to France!
Enjoy! Jean

Hi
I am a newbie to searching for my Clayton line. I would love to find a
connection with someone who may be connected to this line from Lancashire.
I have got back as far as a Joseph Clayton who was born on 5 May 1848 in
Failsworth. He emigrated to New Zealand on the Cicero arriving Lyttelton,
NZ on 19 May 1875.
Any information would be very much appreciated.

I would be interested in knowing the Descendants of William Clayton and
Prudence Lanckford.
There are a lot of us with Claytons in the United States that are likely
related to the above.
