I hope not.
I also have been trying to discover a link to President Nixon. William Clayton and Prudence Lanckford are my 8th great grandparents. Every line of inquiry I tired has turned up nothing. In his book, "Ancestors of American Presdients," 3rd ed. by Carl Boyer he presents the following early pedigree for President Nixon following the Clayton path:
1) ZEBULON CLAYTON (1663-1744), Monmouth Co., NH - c. 1697
2) (probably) THOMAS CLAYTON, c. 1700 - ante 1783,of Monmouth Co., NJ
3) THOMAS CLAYTON, JR. - possibly Monmouth Co., NJ - c. 1745-Clayton, OH 1813, c. 1772
4) MARY CLAYTON, 18 Feb 1777 - OH - 27 Jan. 1822
I believe William and Prudence were ancestors of:
a.. 2-time Democratic nominee and U.N. Ambassador under Kennedy and Johnson: Adlai Stevenson
b.. Levi Coffin, The famous Abolitionist,
c.. William Mode Spackman, novelist and Rhodes Scholar, and
d.. William Painter, inventor of the bottle cap and founder of the Fortune 500 Company: Crown Holdings.
I can provide documentation of this for those who are interested. I would be very interested in learning of any other famous William Clayton-Prudence Lanckford descendants.

My line goes back to John Clayton who was married in 1692 in West Wittering,
Sussex. This is close to Chichester - about 6 miles, and family stories say
that my Claytons were Quakers, which I understand was also true of William
and Prudence. Descendants of John Clayton also lived in Chichester. Thus,
I feel sure that the two lines must be connected in some way, but through
Claytons who stayed in Sussex - possibly cousins of William ... ?
I'd like to find out more about William's parents and uncles etc to get a
plausible link. I've been to the Public Record Office in Kew and checked
the Quaker Quarterly Sessions for info, and there is plenty about William
and Prudence etc, but I still can't make a connection myself.
Btw - here's a googly - does everyone in this line know that Richard Nixon
was descended from William and Prudence through his Milhous line? :¬)

Hi Claytons.
I'm new to this and have watched with interest the latest postings. At the
moment I can find no connection except geography. I live near Chichester,
W.Sx but my Clayton line seems to go back to Yorkshire in 1776. I'll keep
working on it.
Bye, Margaret
I descend from John Clayton d. 1704, Burlington Co., NJ and Alice Myres
through their daughter Leah Clayton b. 1668, who married Abraham Brown. I
haven't collected anything yet on John's ancestors.
Raymond Martin Bell in his book "A Study of the Claytons of Monmouth Co.,
NJ", notes that Lady Diana Spencer (Princess Diana) descends from the NJ
Claytons. Several books on the NJ Claytons are held by the NJ State
Library, Trenton.
Cheers,
Harold Clupper, Chester Co., PA

Hi folks
My CLAYTONs came from Chichester and Selsey in Sussex, England, way back
into the 1600s. I know that William CLAYTON and Prudence LANCKFORD
emigrated from Sussex to the USA about that time. I'd like to make a
connection between my CLAYTONs and that couple but not yet able. Anybody
else got connections with William and Prudence, or with Sussex?
TIA
Katy
Hi to all early Claytons --
My 5th great-grandfather was William Hart, born 1717 (maybe eastern Pa or
in NJ?), died 1799 in Bedford (now Fulton) County, Pa. I have no solid
history on his wife or wives but it appears he got married a second time
around 1758. By 1760 he and his family were living just north of
Hancock, Md., on the Md/Pa border. In 1789 we have the only solid
information on his wife in a land sale where William's wife JANE approved
of the sale. In 1790 he sold some more land but there was no mention of
his wife and it is presumed Jane had died. In searching for the elusive
Jane, I found a Pennsylvania record which showed a William Hart marrying
a Jane Clayton in Philadelphia in 1758.
I've communicated with some Claytons several years ago who had Jane
Clayton (widow) marrying William Hart in that time frame but they had no
further information on William or where the two of them disappeared to or
anything else about them.
Could any of you share what you have on your early Claytons and/or Jane
Clayton in particular? Any help, facts, clues, anything... it would
really be appreciated.
Thanks for reading this! Mike Thorne mhthorne(a)juno.com

William & Prudence's daughter Prudence married Henry
Reynolds, son of William Sr. Reynolds and Margaret
Exton. Henry was born in Chichester, Sussex and his
parents were married there at St. Pancras 6 Mar 1644.
Both of the parents were originally from Kent. Henry
married Prudence in Burlington, NJ. They all later
moved to Pennsylvania where they died, except for
William. He reputedly died while in England on
business.
