My Claytons were from Prince Wm Co, Va. Rowan/Stokes Co, NC, Pendleton Dist
SC, Hall Co, Ga to Gilmer Co, Ga. I can help you with these from 1700 up to
the present.
Moses L. Clayton was born in Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky, on
Sept.17, 1821.
when he was twelve years old they migrated to Morgan County, Illinois. They
lived on a farm on the north edge of Franklin, Illinois.
All Census reports indicate his parents were born in Georgia. I suspect they
were in close proximity with the Woods Families, which also show Georgia for
those born around 1800.
Sincerely,
Richard Brice
Do you have any Clayton's in Georgia about 1800/1820?
I have a Moses L. Clayton who gave information on the census reports that his
Father & Mother were born in Georgia.

Kimmy, This is what I discovered on Coleman Clayton. To many Johns to make a
meaningful search. I found 3 marriage references for Coleman Clayton:
Elizabeth Wyatt m:6-30-1840 in Pendleton Co., KY.,
Phoebe Buchanan m: 10-11-1825 in Rockbridge Co., VA..,
Betsy Watkins, m:12-3-1818 in Rockbridge Co.,, VA.,
These were taken from: Family Tree Makers, vol 229, Marriage Index,
1728-1850,: KY. NC, TN, VA, WV.
Also in World Family Tree, Vol 7, tree # 3123 under Coleman Clayton I found:
John Clayton, b:1735, m: ? Coleman, chilrden Daniel, Richard, Sarah, John Jr.
& Colman.
Coleman Clayon, b: 1760 in Warren Co., NC, m: 10-14-1793 to Jane ?, Children:
Nancy, Polly/Mary, Coleman Jr., John T., & Robert.
Coleman Clayton, Jr. WFT Est 1781-1810.
This will give you an idea of "John Clayton" seaches with just a name, thare
are 7 Johns in four generations of Clytons in this line. Even a name as
uncommon as Coleman Clayton there are three marriges listed, none of them
apparently the one listed in WFT vol &, tree # 3123. As I said in my reply, which
apparently went to Clayton - L, I would appreciate a list of you line, even though
there is no appearent tie.
Harry W. Ziegler, Bloomington, IL.
Sorry Kim, but I find norecord of a Coleman Clayton. Augustine & a John were
reportedly brothers. If you are descended from John then it is apparently a
different line, or I've missed Coleman along the way. I am a compiler, not
actually a Genealoist, so my documentation is sometimes skectchy, being what
some one else tells me, therefore I could be expected to have more, additional,
undocumented names than a true genealogist. I will keep my eyes open for
Coleman since he is now on my list of unattached Claytons's. It would help if you
could send me information on your line including dates and places. I often
find a connection as a result, since it gives me more names to connect too. I
have a good listing of Augustines line which is the one with which I am
affilated. They, the Beasley's and Smiths migrated from SC to TN and hence to
southern IL. These are all major trees I am looking for along with Dorris which also
followed the same route. These four families intermarried with each other to
the point it's hard to keep them seperated. For an example, Harriet Nule
Beasley married a Dorris. Her daughter, Ellen Pocahantus Dorris married
Granfield Clayton. They were parents of Leron Henry Clayton who married my
grandmother Eliza Beasley Ziegler who's grandfather, Samuel Minton Beasley, was a first
cousin to Harriett Null Beasley. Unfortunatly John was a common name among
the Claytons, I have eight in my files but none old enough to be your John
except Augustines broyther. There was an Austine Jr, but he had no brothers or
son's by the name of John. Plese keep in touch. We, a Beasley, found a close
relationship after echanging information for two years. Not only did I find her
gggb?grandfather, who had previousley been listed as unattached was the son
of my ggggrandfather, and based on that information was able to trace the
Beasley's back six more generations. I had my ggggarndfather listed as a member of
my Clayton line but with no information to connect him to my line of Beaslys.

Nila Blackham here. I have not been able to send mail for several days from
my geocities account,
so I've created a temporary account for myself at hotmail AGAIN.
Here are the Clayton pensions that were missing from the list I posted some
time ago. They come from Virgil White's "Genealogical Abstracts of
Revolutionary War Pension Files," page 666.
Augustine CLAYTON, S12693, SC Line
Soldier was sometimes called Austin Clayton; he was born 4 Mar 1755 and had
a brother John who also served in the Revolutionary War. Soldier lived on
the "Big Catawba River" in Chester Co SC at enlistment, and his brother
John was a lt. in the same company. Soldier applied for pension 3 Sep 1832
in Warren Co KY. He mentioned a wife but did not name her.
Coleman CLAYTON, widow Jane, W6692, BLW #17574-160-55, NC Line
Soldier was born in 1760 in Warren Co NC and lived in Caswell Co NC at
enlistment. After the war, the part of Casewell Co he lived in became
Person Co NC. Soldier applied in Person Co NC on 19 Sep 1832.
Soldier married Jane LAYTON [sic] on 14 Oct 1793, and marriage bond was
signed by soldier and a William SATTERFIELD on 12 Oct 1793 in Franklin Co
NC. Soldier died 1 Sep 1839 in Person Co NC; widow applied 26 Jan 1843 in
Person Co NC, aged 71. Widow applied for BLW 23 Apr 1855 in Person Co NC.
In 1832 one John CLAYTON was aged 74 and a resident of Person Co NC, but no
relationship to soldier was stated.

Yes, the abstract is very confusing. I'm going to have certificate
genealogist friend of mine take a look at it. I'll get back with you
when I have some answers.
