I am trying to find a birth certificate for Ellen Clayton in England.
I know her mother's maiden
name is Julia Marchment. Julia married James Clayton (seaman) in 1854
in Portsea District,
but I don't know if he is Ellen's father. Ellen married Frank Forster
in 1877. According to the
marriage certificate, she was born in 1850. The 1881 census and her
1906 death certificate
show her different ages than possible for 1850 birth. I've searched
years 1845-1855. I've
considered the possibility she was illegitimate and searched under
Ellen Marchment as well.
Can anyone help?
Not that I know of. However, the Rochdale lead hasn't borne much fruit so
far after merely 60 years. Do I hear a nomination for Rachel Clayton???

Hey John, Thanks for the Google tip. I enjoyed looking at the various
Buxworth information. I even typed in Chinley Independent Chapel and All
Saints Parish Church at Glossop and found pictures of where my ancestors
were married and baptised, I couldn't believe it....Beth

Thank you for responding! I would like to learn more about this. But I am
about 100% sure that there is a difference between Buxton and Buxworth. Let
me relate what I have received from the folks from Derbyshire who have
researched my Clayton line. "Buxworth is a peaceful residential village in
the High Peak District of Derbyshire. Access to the village (in the US
village means population of less than 500) is reached along a lane leading
off the main road between Stockport and Chapel-en-le-Frith. The lane leads
to the adjoining village of Chinley sited on the old pack-horse route
between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Glossop." My ggggreatgrandparents John
Clayton and Mary Bate were married at the All Saints Parish Church Glossop
in 1811. Most of their children were baptised at the Chinley Independent
Chapel. I have another description of Bugsworth being located "in the
narrow valley of the Black Brook and surrounded by hills known as Chinley
Churn, Brown Knoll, Eccles Pike and Black Hill." I have been led to believe
these are VERY small villages. I have also corresponded with a fellow whose
address is Chinley, High Point, SK23 6DJ, UK. You folks from Derbyshire, do
you know of Chinley, Glossop, Chapel-en-le-Frith, or Bugsworth Canal Basin?

Thank you, no , I doubt very much that I am descended from that line. I
don't know where Derby shire is but the people on my tree are from
Glouchestershire. ( not sure that is spelled correctly. My Grandfather, Ernest, born 1868
in London was the son of James, son of Benjamin, son of James. He was an
artist and there is a collection of his watercolor studies of California Wild
Flowers in the California Room of the San Francisco Library. Nancy

This Clayton line is from the High Peak District of Derbyshire. Joel's
father, John Clayton, was born in 1785 and his ancestors are unknown.
John's mother, Mary Atherton was only briefly married to a Dr. Samuel
Clayton. The given names I listed in my last email were Bate family names,
Joel Clayton's mother was Mary Bate. I would be interested if you think you
are descended from this line. The Clayton Historical Society is very
interested in keeping track of the descendents of John and Mary Bate Clayton

My pleasure! And I am not surprised this is not part of your Clayton
lineage, I had a significant struggle finding the parents of my great great
grandfather Eli Clayton. I will quote some passages from literature I have
in regards to the Clayton Historical Society in Clayton California.
"The Clayton Historical Society was founded in 1974 to research, collect,
record, preserve, display, borrow, share and interpret local history
information and memorabilia, and to promote understanding of Clayton origins
and development....The Society has developed a "twinning" bond with Joel
Clayton's birth town, Bugsworth, England, and the town he founded, Clayton,
California....Joel Henry Clayton was born on Brierly Green Farm, Bugsworth
(Buxworth), England in 1812. The eldest of twelve children, he immigrated
to America in 1837 and became a true pioneer of the early West. A well
built man, over six feet tall with exceptional energy and ambition, he led
four wagon trains west from Missouri. He was a talented mining engineer,
prospector, trader, farmer, community developer, and all round entrepreneur.
Joel first saw Clayton Valley in 1843. In 1853 he bought land and in 1856
recorded and began developing his new town of Clayton. Joel died in March
1872, of quick pneumonia, after exposure while trying to save a sick calf."
Joel Clayton's siblings were Hannah Clayton Howdle, William, John Jr., Mary
Clayton Bainbridge, Peter, Charles, Elizabeth Clayton Hopper, Samuel, James
Adkin, and Eli.
The web site address for the Society is www.claytonhs.com. Their mailing
address is, Clayton Historical Society, 6101 Main Street, P.O. Box 94,
Clayton California. Although not a relative, Dick Ellis is a most
enthusiastic contact person for the Clayton family research.
Thanks for asking, Beth

Hi Group,
I have covered a lot of ground since my initial inquires about my great
great grandfather Eli Clayton. I have found out, mainly through contacts
with the Clayton Historical Society, that Eli Clayton was born in Bugsworth,
now Buxworth, Derbyshire, England, Sept. 28 1833. He was the youngest child
of John Clayton and Mary Bate. John Clayton was the illegitimate son of
Mary Atherton Clayton, baptised Sept. 11 1785 at Matthew's Church Hayfield,
Chinley, Derbyshire, and it is generally accepted that his father will never
be known. The John Clayton and Mary Bate family emigrated to the U.S. in
1839, when Eli was seven years old. Two older brothers came over in 1837
and gave a thumbs up for the rest of the family to follow. In 1839, the
only Clayton to stay behind was 14 year old Charles, to finish his
education. The family settled in the Mifflin, Wisconsin area. Three sons
participated in the wagon trains heading west in the late 1840's and early
1850's. In 1873, Eli, his wife Hannah Woodward of Tipperary Ireland, and
their 7 children, moved from Wisconsin to Iowa. Eli was a large landholder
in Pottawattamie County (Council Bluffs) and was on the Board of Supervisors
for that county. His last child, James, was born in Iowa in 1882. Eli died
in Atlantic Iowa in 1893, and Hannah died in 1895. I am descended from
their second child, Ralph Wesley Clayton, who married Mary Caroline Beede.
Eli's brother Charles, was a Representative from California to the U. S.
Congress from 1873-1875. Charles also worked for the U.S. Customs Service,
as did Ralph Wesley Clayton. Ralph Wesley moved around in the U.S. Treasury
Department and I am currently trying to trace those movements.
Cheers, Beth Zaring/Ohio
