I am trying to find out any information that I can on the Claytons that
lived in Boone Co., MO. There was a Thomas F. Clayton m. Nancy K. Rule.
Their children were John Samuel Clayton m. Fannie Chambers, Nancy
Clayton m. John Howard Chambers, and James Rule Clayton m. Harriet
Jones. They lived in Boone Co., from about 1820 til about 1880.
Any information would be appreciated.
Elizabeth Davis
Good morning fellow Claytons
I am very much intrigued with the details I see on the list of Claytons in
the South of the US and how long they have been in the country .
As there are a number of places called Clayton in England and no doubt this
was the origin of many a persons name.
We know all about the William Clayton of L.D.S. fame who originated in
Preston U.K . but that was relatively recently , even with his 10 wives he
was not responsible for those Claytons in the south .
Although they are not directly related to our family who stayed close to
their origins i.e. Clayton-le- Moors and Clayton -le-Woods I am interested
to know where those Claytons in the South came from in the 1600s and
earlier.
Colin Clayton now in New Zealand.

Hello,
Its Tim again....from NYC. Justin.....what part of the City are you from?
OK....my Clayton line has some very deep roots in the great Dominion State of
Virginia too. My gr grandfather, a prosperous barber and confectionist, was
born in and lived most of his life in Roanoke........His children were born
in and around the Lynchburg area.....
OK.......my gr gr grandfather, William Henry Clayton, was a Union veteran of
the Civil War having served admirably in the USCT (United State Coloured
Troops) and was one of the first Black 1st Sgt's in his unit which was among
those that chased Lee into Appotomattox.
I guess the fact that my Claytons were racially-mixed should narrow it down
some considerably........
So if anyone has anything to share about the illustrious Claytons of Central
Va., then you know where to find me...
OK.....hope to talk to you (anyone soon)
G'day Colin:
My line of Clayton's is said to descend from Samuel Clayton and Susannah
Morris. Some researchers state Samuel was born about 1640 in Gloucester Co.,
Virginia, on the peninsula between the York and Rappahannock rivers. Other
researchers claim that he was born in England and removed to Virginia.
There was quite a lively debate about his origins several months ago on this
mailing list but it proved inconclusive. Several researchers believe him to
be the son of William Clayton of Oakenshaw but, in my opinion, that scenario
does not jive. To date, not a scrap of documented evidence has been turned up
on Samuel so it is anybody's guess as to where he came from. If he was indeed
born in Virginia about 1640 it would seem likely that his parents were
members of the Jamestown Company.
Quite a number of Samuel's descendants took root in Virginia and have been
relatively easy to trace. Many were well-to-do planters and very involved in
politics and the Anglican Church; I have located biographies for several of
them. Prior to the Revolutionary War my line of unsung and lesser known
Clayton's left their wealthy cousins behind and migrated to North Carolina;
some of Samuel's descendants moved to Georgia while still others headed west
to the Ohio River valley and staked claim to land in Kentucky, Ohio and
Indiana. During the Civil War Samuel had many descendants in the ranks of the
North and South. From there they fanned all across the US.
That, in a nutshell, is what I know about my line of Clayton's.

Hi Candy,
I do not know of the specific Claytons that you mentioned. All of I know of
the SC Claytons that went
to South GA and FL is from Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia and from you. I was
in touch with
Jim Meeks of FL a few years ago who is a Clayton descendant from that group.
His old e mail
address in not good anymore. I will let you know if I find anything on all
of this.

All I know is that there was an African-American Senator named Edward W.
Brooke who represented Massachussetts from 1967-1979......He was the ONLY
Black male U.S. Senator during the entire 20th century......I believe that he
was from Virginia too.
Now......lets go back to the Claytons from Roanoke, Va.
Talk to you soon.

Hi Clayton,
I have a probable descendant of Isham Clayton but need more information to
prove it.
KNOWN: Isham Clayton and his wife Susannah Pryor (widow of Samuel Jeter and
Thomas Brooke) had a son named Jackson Clayton born abt. 1872 who married a
Martha (?) and from the census records had a son named Filmore born 1849 and
a daughter Analine born 1851.
(Samuel Jeter was a brother of Sarah Jeter, wife of your Vando Clayton)
KNOWN: Susannah's daughter Elizabeth Brooke born 1810 married Daniel W.
Clayton born 1801. I believe Daniel was also a son of Isham, probably by an
earlier marriage. One of their sons was named Thomas Brooke Clayton born
1831 who married Georgia Collier. They had "foster" children living in their
household Eckols County GA 1860 named Holcom Rhodes and Remer McCullough The
do not appear to have had children of their own.
KNOWN: Another son of Elizabeth Brooke and Daniel W. Clayton, Milledge
Clayton and his wife Sarah Green also had a son named Thomas Brooke Clayton
born 1872 who married a Susan M. Howard. I do not have any descendants for
this Thomas Brooke Clayton yet.
The Brooke family has a strong tradition of naming sons after their ancestor
Thomas Brooke who came to South Carolina from Maryland about 1784. There were
nine generations of eldest sons all named Thomas in line from Robert Brooke,
(1602-1655) who was a Colonial Governor of Maryland. Daughters in the
latter generations frequently named a son Thomas Brooke ____.
NOW for the question..... Can anyone identify the following folks?
Thomas Brooke Clayton born Valdosta, Lowndes County Georgia 9-8-1899 son of
Jackson P. Clayton and Elizabeth Crews. He died in Holly HIll Volusia County
Florida 9-27-1963. His wife's name was Mary Ann according to his death
certificate.
The 1880 census for Ware County Georgia has a Jackson Clayton born about 1849
and wife Liza born about 1862 (given the age difference she may be a second
wife) and they were listed with one son Laylon born 1879. I found this one
in old census notes and need to look again at the son's name to check the
spelling.
It is possible that Jackson Clayton and wife Liza (1880 Ware County) and
Jackson P. Clayton and wife Elizabeth Crews are the same folks. Can anyone
confirm or disprove this?
Anyone have any addtional details on this Jackson Clayton and Thomas Brooke
Clayton? or any other members of their families?

Henry Clayton who was born in Queen Anne Co. MD, and enlisted in Talbot Co.
Md...
I believe his son went to Roanoke, Va to have his family....
Is there any info out there on Claytons in central Virginia?
Hope to hear from anyone soon.
Tim, son of a Clayton fron Va.
Looking for information on William Clayton, born about 1818 in New Jersey;
moved to Brooklyn, NY. Married to Elizabeth Robertson, b. 1815 in NY.
Children were Harriet, 1840; Thomas, 1844; Edward William, 1846; Mary, 1848;
Sarah, 1851; Henrietta, 1856, and Carolyn Lavinia, 1858.
My dates may be off a year!
Thanks. :)
Susan
This John Clayton married Sarah (Hatcher) Furster ~1741). The birth of a
number of their children are recorded in the Giesendanner Book of Record for
Orangeburgh. I believe John Clayton served in Captain??
Cheivelettes (spelling) company during the Cherokee Wars. I think this John
Clayton died before the
American Rev. but his son John may have served.

I would like to here from anyone who is a descendant of John Clayton or Isham Clayton who lived in the
Orangeburgh, SC, area in mid 1700s. Many of this family moved to GA or MS early in the 1800s. Many others
stayed in SC. We plan to do a book on this Clayton family focusing mainly on the descendants of Vanda Vastine Jamison Clayton (~1790-1856) and his wife Sarah Jeter Clayton. Other branches of the family will be included. If any of
you out there are from this line, let me hear from you.

Thanks for explaining more.. I'm pretty sure "my" John Clayton was not the
line you are referring too..
