My William Clayton was my gr gr grandfather who served in the USCT during the
Civil War.......in one of the same Negro Regiments that fought with the
Massachussetts 54th immortalized in the movie GLORY......He married someone
named Julia Clayton and had 1 son as far as I know....This son dies at the
age of 33 in 1901. They all lived and spent most of their lives in and
around Roanoke and Lynchburg, Va.
Does that info help you out any? Let me know.

We are trying to complete a Book on the families of William "Flat River" Clayton and Benjamin Crews-- from Person County NC to Lawrence County TN.
If you are able to supply your family information, documents, old pictures, etc., it certainly will make for a much better book.
Several of us have been researching and collecting for years and hope that as many families as possible will be included. We will not be including ancestors or brothers and sisters of William Clayton and Benjamin Crews in detail.
Dr. Shirley A. Hollis, my sister, and I will be trying to finish this Book this year, so if you will let me know in the next few weeks, we'll try to include your info, etc. I'll be doing most of this "finishing" since she is now a teaching professor at IPU, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Thalassemia is a rather rare blood condition. There about three different
kinds. Major, Intermediate, and Minor. I have the very minor kind of it.
Major ones usually require blood transfusions and if children are born with
it, usually have all kinds of health problems and often did not survive till
adult hood. My doctor said if I were having children I should have genetic
counseling. I was not diagnosed till I was in my thirties, and could not
have kids anyway, and had already adopted by that stage.
This is a confusing one for me. As, I don't appear to meet the usual
demographics. Is common to peoples who have Mediterranean background. It
basically leaves me with red blood cells that are smaller and paler than
normal, and many of the cells are deformed. Think there are some island
groups, and maybe some Asian groups that are affected, but I don't appear to
be of that background. It does appear that there are pockets of it common to
people of Appalachian groups. I do know that my Florance family was living
in North Carolina in the early 1800s, so possibly it comes from that family.
Just have never been able to find any other family members with this except
my two Clayton cousins. I think they may have the intermediate kind.
Have never been able to find any others, but if they have the minor kind it
just might be they have not been diagnosed. At least one of these ladies was
not diagnosed until she had blood work done prior to surgery. If I have it
right, one of the symptoms is that of excessive bruising. I have always
bruised easily. Garters from girdles often left bruises. I can barely touch
something or scratch myself and have bruises as a result. There is a very
slim chance that this might be form my mothers line. As I found from another
list that a lady who is descended from my mothers great grandmother also has
it. That name is Naff with Montgomery connections.

P.S. descendant of some very deep Clayton roots from Central Virginia...
Not sure I can help you. My Clayton forebears are from Central Virginia;
around the Lynchburg/Roanoke areas..... Sorry I couldn't help you.
And what the heck is Thalessemia anyway?
Talk to you soon.

Does anyone have Jake Latimer Clayton in their files. He was born in 1880
died 1918 in Clarke Co Al and is buried in Marango Co. I need his parents
and siblings and where he was born. Have pictures and other data that I
will share.

Does anyone have a Clayton background with a possible history of Thalassemia
in the Clayton family.
I know that I have two cousins who are of the Clayton ancestry who both have
Thalassemia. I also have the very minor kind of this disease. But I cannot
figure out if it is from the Florance or Clayton family.
My grandfather was Fred Florance. He married Aria Clayton who was the
daughter of John Charles Clayton, and granddaughter of John Fletcher Clayton.
Fred's sister Lilly Florance married Lee Baron Clayton, who was the son of
John Fletcher Clayton, and the uncle of Fred's wife Aria Clayton. I know
that John F. Clayton's lineage goes back to Maryland originally and that is
ancestor was Henry Clayton, who fought in something called the "Flying Camp"
during the Revolutionary War. The family seems to have moved from Maryland
to Ohio, and from there to Missouri where my ancestors lived. Does anyone
have any information about this Clayton family or any Florance - Clayton
connections?
Nadine
Oops, the email I sent previously was confusing. To clarify,
I am requesting a copy of flooney's rather large file on the Clayton
family. flooney, whoever you are, let me know if it is hard-copy and I
should send you some money for it.
I don't have a large file on the Claytons myself. I do have a bit of
information on Sir Robert Clayton (Lord Mayor of England in 1689) of
Bletchingly England, which I will gather together and post sometime soon.
We visited his statue in the church in Bletchingly last summer.
Thanks,
Colleen Clayton
I am looking for my ggfather and his antecedants. This information is partly
supposition, and I may have folks mixed up a bit.
His name was George Higgins CLAYTON born abt 1834 in Ohio.
His parents were Isaac CLAYTON (b ??), and Mary HIGGINS (b. abt 1810 in
PA), married 1832 in Ohio
other children:
Isaac
Julia
Eliza
Something likely happened to Isaac between 1840 and 1850, as the 1850
census has a George H Clayton living with:
D. M. (David Moore) Clayton age 33 male merchant real property $4000 born
Ohio
with D. M:
Susannah age 34 female born Ohio
Jefferson B. 10 male born Ohio

George H. age 16 male clerk born Ohio
D. M. Baird age 26 male clerk born Ohio
(Source: 1850 Ohio census Athens Twp, Athens County Dwelling 74 Household

I believe Mary Higgins CLAYTON went to live with her brother James HIGGINS
in Clayton Twp Perry County OH between 1840 & 1850.
George went west to California between 1850 & 1860 and married there:
George H. Clayton and Mary J. Sinclair, Mrs. on Sept. 28th 1876

Praetzel, Kentfield CA

Do you have any information on Marion Thomas Clayton (who the parents are), and

Just wondering if a Mary Ann Attwood b.1939 who married a Samuel Griffin could be
related. To your Marion Thomas Clayton.
Thanks,

Thanks to those trying to help in my search for my Jane CLAYTON of
Pickens County, SC. I've copied the will of my Elender McCAY-GRIFFIN
below -- where she mentions Jane CLAYTON. From this we know Jane CLAYTON
had died by 1873 and had several children. It says Elender was taking
care of these CLAYTON children -- maybe the CLAYTON husband had died
some time before, also.
Griffin, Elender Box 107 #1023. Probate Judge Office. Pickens, S. C.
I Elender M. Griffin of Pickens Co. being of sound mind and disposing
memory. I desire that all my just debts be paid. I will and desire the
rest and residue of whatever kind or nature to be divided between my
children, excepting from the above devise and bequest the children of my
daughter Jane Clayton decd. as I have heretofore done them all that I
feel able to do.
Dated 2 Sept. 1873. Wit: W. E. Holcombe, R. A. Child, James M. McFall.
Signed: E. M. Griffin. Filed 30 April, 1875.
Est. admr. 21 May 1875 by Aaron Garrett, Thomas Newton, B. F. Lesley who
are bound unto I. H. Philpot, Ord. in the sum of $800.
......................................................................
The only other possible explanation might be this Jane is really Martha
T. or Martha J - for Jane McCAY? All we know about her is that she was
born ca 1830-1842 in Pickens County. Her CLAYTON children would have
been born between 1850-1873.
Is there anyone who has a Martha married to a CLAYTON in Pickens County
who would fit this time period - or CLAYTON children that woulf fit?
Nancy
Is there anyone familar with a Judge Clayton who was the father of Civil War
veteran William Henry Clayton...................Who was the father of Robert
Clayton, a prosperous barber in Roanoke, VA??
Thanks for your help.
Tim
