Hi, Tim:
Sorry, I don't have any information on William Henry Clayton, and I'm not
sure about "Judge Clayton." So many of the Clayton's in my line were lawyers,
it's quite possible they were judges as well. Radford, VA is on the other
side of the state from where mine lived in Gloucester and Bedford counties.
I've only been looking for information on my direct line and haven't come
across any references to racial mixing. Your comment about the Langhorne
sisters sounds familiar, but I can't remember where I'd heard it and don't
have any notes on them in my database. The last of my Clayton line was ELVIRA
CLAYTON, (daughter of JOHN WILLIS CLAYTON, JR. and LUCINDA DOUGLAS). She was
born in 1797 and married PHILIP G. TURPIN in 1814, so I never quite got as
far as Civil War times.

OK........thanks for the info. Somewhere along the way some of the Claytons
became racially mixed I believe. My gr gr grandfather was William Henry
Clayton who was one of the very first 1st Sgt's in the USCT (United States
Colored Troops) during the Civil War.......I also know that he was present at
Gen. Lee's surrender at Appotomattox. His name is enscribed on the Coloured
Civil War Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington DC. What I'm interested in
is his father "Judge Clayton" who I think was Caucasian. Do you have any
info on a "Judge Clayton" in Radford VA?
I do know that Rosa Clayton, my gr grandmother, was the personal seamstress
to the illustrious Langhorne sisters of Virginia; especially to the one who
later became Lady Astor, the first woman to serve in England's Parliament.
>From what I've been told, Rosa sewed the robes she wore when Parliament was
in session during the 30's and 40's of the 20th century.
OK....thanks for the info. And if you find anything on a Judge Clayton in
Radford, or anywhere else in VA (particularly Roanoke and/or Lynchburg)
please let me know. The Claytons were one side of my family that did keep
the better of documented records.
OK.......Thanks again. Hope to hear from you soon.

My Clayton's are from Virginia.
John Clayton, Sr. was born 1665 in Fulham, England. He practiced law in
England, and then emigrated to Virginia in 1705. He was the Attorney General
for the Virginia Colony from 1713 to 1737. His son, John Clayton, Jr. was
born 1694 in Fulham, England. He emigrated to Virginia in 1715 and was the
Clerk of the County Court for Gloucester, and was also known as Dr. John
Clayton, the Botanist. I have quite a bit of information on this Clayton
family, going back to Thomas Clayton of Clayton Hall, Leicester, England who
was born about 1530 and married Agnes Thornell.

Very nice........but I'm interested mainly in the Claytons from the Dominion
State;
Particularly in or around Lynchburg, Radford, and the Roanoke areas.
The earliest I can trace my family back to is a Judge Clayton in either
Radford or Roanoke.........or possibly Lynchburg, but I don't think Lynchburg
was really founded or incorporated yet as a City prior to the Civil War.
But any info anyone has would be most appreciated.
Hope to hear from anyone soon.

I am looking for my great-grandfather George Clayton, born in Ohio 1bt
1834-38. I believe his mother's maiden name was Higgins. I found a marriage
for Isaacand Mary in Perry County in 1832. Does anyone have any info on
these folks?
Thanks,
Colleen Clayton
Liz, can you give me the date & county of the Illinois marriage bond you
mentioned below?
My CLAYTON branch meandered to Lawrence & Crawford Counties after 1823,
maybe they traveled with yours. HERNDON is not an unfamiliar name to me
as a SURNAME. And there is a John Clayton (wife Mary FARGESON) in the
family back in Culpeper Co., Va. who had a Philip whom I believe was
born 1753 in Culpeper d. 1810 but I don't know whom he married;
perhaps he named a son John who married this Nancy FORDE.
[ I need some kind of time frame here.]
I don't have all the middle initials of the umpteen Philips <sigh> and
don't know where the HERNDON name might have begun to be carried on in
the family. HERNDONs are in Virginia too. FORD from Kentucky (not Forde
as far as I know is also in my family beginning in Crawford Co., Ill.)
but so far no Nancy Ford or Forde in my records.

Elizabeth, by process of elimination this may help. I believe the son of
Philip 1758-1821& Ann Swann (Churchill) CLAYTON was Philip S. Clayton
(the S. probably stands for Samuel). This Philip was born 10 May 1809 at
Catalpa Farm in Culpeper, Culpeper Co., Va and married Margaret CONWAY,
daughter of Francis & Polly (Slaughter) Conway of Orange County, Virginia
on 3 November 1827.

THANKS...BUT I'M MAINLY INTERESTED IN CLAYTONS IN VIRGINIA. PARTICULARLY IN
ROANOKE OR LYNCHBURG.......
Yes, Lawrence has a University there. Many students have taken advantage of
GI bill etc. We just drove through Garnet the other day, while on our way to
my sisters home in Oklahoma. Also, were doing some genealogy in a couple of
little bitty towns, where my grandmother (maiden name Clayton) mother lived.
I do have a couple of cousins from my Mom's side of the family, who I think
lived in the country and taught school in Garnet. Small world sometimes. My
Clayton family mainly lived in Missouri. Think they were kind of all over.
Henry Clayton I think was born in Maryland, and served in something called
the Flying Camp, during the Revolutionary War. Some branches split and he
first went to Ohio, and then to Missouri. My great-great grandfather was
John Fletcher Clayton. Apparently he was a physician in Ohio, and then moved
to Missouri, where he was both a doctor and circuit riding Methodist
minister. His son John Charles Clayton was married to Mary Jane (Molly)
Vest. He was shot in some kind of feud when my grandmother was eighteen
months old. She later remarried and moved to Oklahoma.
