My g-grandmother was Talithia Ellen Clayton b. 1849 GA. She had a son
out of wedlock and his name was George Washington Clayton b. 1869 Polk
County, Tn. We were told she was made to leave home and I do not know
for sure who she lived with. I cannot find her in an 1870 census
anywhere. I knew anything about Talithia's family until about 2 months
ago. Her Father was Thomas B. Clayton b. Ga he married Priscillia H.
Weathers in 1824 Pike County, GA. The other siblings were T.J. Clayton
m. Soforina Nelson, Jack Clayton m Emily Coe, Jane Clayton m. Riley
Willaby, Margaret Clayton m. James Swearengin, Martha Clayton m. Thomas
Williams, Mary Ann Clayton m. Jason Coe, John Clayton m. Caroline Coe. I
do know that the Coe's were brother and sisters and they were all born
in Tn. All of Thomas B Clayton's children born in GA. I found this by a
letter that my grandfather George W. Clayton had in his wallet. This was
found after his death in 1947.Where he listed in the names of the family
he has written by a Grandson. He also has Robert Clayton his
g-grandfather. I was sent a copy of this and am now trying to find all
of my relativies. All these years I only knew of my mothers family. I
have found the marriages of all but Jack Clayton and Emily Coe, T. J.
Clayton and Sofaronia Nelson. Does any one reconize any of these
Claytons. I do know they lived in Pike County, Ga, Polk County, Tn and
Alabama. Thanks for any help you could give.

Ok! I need help! Can someone please clarify this for me:
John Clayton who married Rebecca Lenettie Hood whose daughter is Violet Clayton that married Jonas E. Bates. I know this gets confusing, but is John and Rebecca's daughter, Nettie Lucinda Clayton, the same Nettie Clayton that married Wm. Jasper McNelly? Does anyone have any dates for these people. If so, and if this is the same Nettie, then you guys are great and just tied my family with my husbands family and made my children their own cousins. Now how perfect is that?!? Actually, what you have done is extended my family research and I love everyone one of you! So, if anyone can confirm this for me, please do so!
Thanks,
Kim Bates

No, actually finding John's parents is the focus of my search at the present
time too.. He had a brother named in a couple records as Augustine Clayton..
who also served in the Revolutionary war.. they both entered into the war
from SC and migrated after the war.. one to KY and one to TN.. I have heard
of a lot of Clayton's in Texas and haven't been watching that info.. I don t
find a GW or James GW in my line as of yet.. I'm rather new.. only a year
and a half.. so, I'll keep your inquiry and watch for that name! As far as
marriages in TN.. now that I have some info about.. but, not all.. mainly
Polk County and some in Monroe.. How do you know he married an Elizabeth in
TN?? Do you know her last name?

Dolly,
I read with interest, this message. I have reason to believe that my
Claytons came from SC, but have been unable to connect anywhere with any
degree of certainty. I have made some speculations based on the repeated use
of the same names. Anyway, do you know the children, grandchildren of this
John Clayton?
I am searching for a James G.W. Clayton, who is said to have been a
shoemaker and came to Texas from SC. I do not know if he came directly to
Texas or if he lived elsewhere before he came to pre-revolutionary,
pre-republic Texas. Only other pre-Texas info I have is that he married
Elizabeth ? in TN. Do not know if any of this info is accurate.
James G.W. is and has been an illusive fellow. Seems to came right out of
thin air. There are accounts of his existence in Texas, land grants, court
proceedings, etc. I'm sure that a whole ancestral tree will unfold if I can
just find his parents.

At the time of its founding in 1797, the town of Waynesboro was known as Waynesburg. On December 21, 1818, the town was incorparated into a borough, and its name changed to Waynesboro, in deference to another Waynesburg. Ironically for us, this simplification may foster confusion while using this archive, since there is also a Waynesboro in Augusta county. Waynesboro, Pennslyvania is located in the southern part of Franklin county, and like Greencastle lay on the route of the national turnpike between Baltimore and Pittsburgh. The original town plat was laid out as a diamond, with two intersecting roads: the Greencastle and Nicholas Gap road, running east to west, and the Chambersburg and Hagerstown road, running north to south.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Banks
The First National Bank of Waynesboro grew out of an 1856 savings institution, but was not itself organized until 1863. Its first directors were: George Jacobs, Daniel Mickly, Samuel Frantz, George Besore, James H. Clayton, Alex. Hamilton, John Price, Henry Good, and W. S. Amberson. Jacobs, Price, and Amberson have all served as presidents, (Price in the 1880s). John Philips was the original cashier, and held the post through the 1880s.
