I am trying to find information on Thomas Clayton b. abt 1785. He had the
following children:
John b. abt 1818
Margaret b. abt 1820 KY m. John Rigsby
Robert b. abt 1821
Susan b. abt 1828 TN m. Hillman Rigsby
Elizabeth b. abt 1832
Martha Jane b. 1835
William b. 1839
I have been given information that they might have been in Henry Co., TN in
1840 and in Hickman Co., Tn in 1830.
I would appreciate any help.
Carol
Is anyone researching the Eldbridge Clayton family that went from KY to Southeast
MO? Elbridge's son William married Mary Ann (WEBB) KIRKLAND, who was my husband's
GGGrandmother.
Sandy McSpadden.
Dear "cousins,"
Although it is not in my line, I do have some information which might be
helpful, or at least point the way for the VA-England connection. I copied
this info. from the mss. notebooks of a noted local historian and engineer,
Chester F. Baker. His records are now on microfilm in the Delaware County
(PA) Historical Society's library. In the 1930s, Baker planned a full
history of his family, which included the CLAYTON line of PA. He spent 20
years compiling the records, drawing upon manuscript sources within his own
family, papers of Judge Thomas Clayton of Delaware, the 1566 Dugdale Visitatio
ns of Yorkshire, articles in the National Magazine of Virginia, letters of VA
Attorney General John Clayton and of his son John, the noted botanist.
Unfortunately, many of the documents he was able to consult are not now
findable.
I. Thomas CLAYTON of Yorkshire
II. William CLAYTON of Okenshaw; d. 1627; was a barrister of the Inner
Temple, London and presumably inherited "Clayton Hall" in Yorkshire upon his
father's death. William/s children included WILLIAM (my line, and the
emigrant to Marcus Hook (then Chichester) PA); Thomas, fl. 1666 and was his
father's heir; and Jasper, knighted by King Charles II for a service not
recorded
III. Sir Jasper CLAYTON; had sons John (see below) and George. C. F. Baker
writes of George "was a haberdasher in London and would, perhaps, like many
other honest tradesmen of the family -- carpenters, cordwainers and tailors
-- never have again been noticed in the family records if he had not married
Miss Hester Palmer, daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Palmer."
IV. Sir John CLAYTON, son of Sir Jasper. Was a barrister like his father,
admitted to the bar in 1650; knighted on 22 July 1664. Had at least two
sons, John and Jasper.
V. John CLAYTON, son of Sir John. Also a barrister, admitted to the bar 6
June 1682. Emigrated to VA ca. 1705, presumably via Jamestown, at that time
still the principal port of that colony. Was Attorney General of VA until his
death in 1737. Was also a Judge of the Court of Admiralty and a member of the
VA House of Burgesses. Left a large collection of family papers and documents
which Baker consulted, but which have not been found since the 1930s.
V. Sir Jasper CLAYTON, son of Sir John. Lieutenant General in the British
Army and Governor of Gibraltar. General Jasper was killed in the battle of
Dettingen, Bavaria, in 1743. (This English victory was celebrated by Handel's
Te Deum.) In his will, General Jasper left a modest estate to be equally
divided among all his children except his daughter Juliana. Referring to her,
he wrote, "I give and bequeath to my very undutiful and lost daughter
Juliana, the reputed wife of Peter Hooper who was my servant, one shilling
and no more." Class mattered in those days!
Hope this helps some of you. I have extensive records of the land
ownership and public service of THOMAS CLAYTON of PA (my line), which I will
try to put up on this list within the next week. However, I'm deeply involved
with Quaker activities in connection with the Republican Convention meeting
here now, so am not sure exactly when I can get to it.
Peace, thy cousin, Nancy Webster
In land transactions in Cherokee County, GA, in 1845, WARREN CLAYTON,
Sr.
sold some of his lands to the following people:
1. Warren Clayton, Jr.
2. Sanford Clayton
3. David Clayton
4. Charles C. Clayton
It is my belief that the above WARREN CLAYTON, Sr. is the Warren Clayton
who was
born in Virginia around 1780. This Warren Clayton is the brother of
Charles Collier Clayton, Jr. In the 1850 Census of GA, the above
Clayton does not appear. I also looked in Alabama and Mississippi Census
reports for 1850, with the same results. Does anyone out there have any
information on the family of Warren Clayton, Sr.? Are the above
mentioned men, children of
Warren Clayton, and, who was the wife of Warren Clayton, Sr.? There are
indications that
Warren Clayton married a woman named Lydia Howeling in Hall (?) GA in
1834, but this was
probably wife #2.
Warren Clayton, Jr. married Jane Watson in 1841 in GA, but, by 1850, he
is living in
Floyd Co., GA, with his wife Jane and their children. I believe that he
was living in another
State in 1860, MS, if my notes are correct.
Joe
My own knowledge only goes as far back as my grandfather, Leslie CLAYTON, who married Hilda YOUNG in the early 1920s in
England. They settled in Bromley, Kent, but I'm not sure where they came from. I am hoping to get more information and
will post it when and if I do. Leslie had sisters Mabel, Beatrice and Elsie, who lived in Selsey, Sussex (near Clayton
Road!) until the late 1990s. None of them had children, I don't think.
Will post more when I know it!
Katy
Will post more when I know it.

Hi Annie,
This is the second breath of hope I had from this list. I am looking
for Julia Ann Clayton. She was born in 1801 in VA. Her parents were also
born in VA according to the census. Someone on this list reported that
she was an orphan in Wardship in Stokes, NC in 1817. The wardship was
being cancelled because she had married Daniel Walker Pound(s) 9 May 1817
and gone to TN. She ended up in Pike Co, MS as my g-g-gm.
I found a John Clayton in Stokes in 1820, but if he is brother to
your list then he would be too old. However William was also in Stokes
and perhaps one of their sons was father to my Julia Ann. Is this too
convoluted? Can anyone help? Julia is one of my most perplexing puzzles
since I can't find her beginnings and I can't find her end but have her
well documented in the middle (and her husband D.W. Pound(s) is
positively ephemeral!).
Thanks,
Joyce Ronquillo
that is where m;y clayton line came from. Do you know of Thomas Clayton

I am actually IN England and my maiden name was Clayton! My father's family came from Selsey, near Chichester,
Sussex, England; the last great-aunt still living there having died only about three years ago. I am not actually
researching the Claytons per se, because I understand somebody else back in the line has done the family tree, but I
joined the list out of curiousity and also to see if I could be of any assistance, being a thoroughbred Clayton
myself! If anybody would like details of my family (but only in living memory) I would be glad to oblige. Please
bear in mind, however, that I will be unsubscribing this weekend for a while because I am off on holiday yippeeeeee!

Hello
My Clayton line is also a UK search. My grandfather James Alfred(Alf) was
born July 29th, 1913 in Marsden, Yorshire. He had 4 siblings Esther b. 1907,
Sarah b. 1909, Edith 1911, and Robert b. 1915. They emmigrated to Canada in
1927 with their mother Mary.
I have a photo of their father who until last week was just a nameless face
as one of 3 soldiers with their rifles. Through a surprise meeting with
Esther's 93 year old husband Wilson Critchley I found out their father's
name was Albert. He died in WW1.
Mary is listed as 40 on the ship list I found her on with the National
Canadian Archives site so b. 1887. I will have to wait though on my search
for Albert's life as my local family history center is closed for most of
the summer.

Definitely interested in UK Claytons. Not sure how far back mine goes. My grandparents Ernest and Martha Clayton
came to the US in the early 1900s(?). I know my grandfather had brothers but do not know names. Not even sure where
he was born. Nor grandmother. Nor even when or where they were married.. Any leads would be appreciated. My
immediate family tree on my Dad's side is quite limited as both he and I are only children.
