H Y'all,
Guess what? I'm on the wrong side of the pond and hadn't a clue that
the Marsden referred to was in the UK. Even over here we have to be
careful to put state as well as town and county but I suppose we need to
be even clearer since so many place names exist in more than one state
and country.

Jane,
Fancy seeing you on this list.
If you get a reply, I'd be very surprised - very much a USA orientated
list.
Still not too much non-gen stuff - unlike another list we both know and
love(?).
Good luck.

I am not a regular subscriber to CLAYTON-L, nor do I have any CLAYTON
ancestors that I am aware of. But I ran across a tidbit that might be of
use to CLAYTON researchers.
I do have SLATON ancestors. There are a number of variant spellings,
including SLATEN, SLEYDON, SLEYDEN, SLAYDEN, and in particular for this
group -- SLAYTON.
I was missing an 1850 Jefferson County, TN census entry that I thought ought
to be there for Thomas Slaton. I was using a transcription by Burl
Underwood. I finally found the entry I was looking for in the microfilm.
It was for Thomas Slayton. It really was my Thomas Slaton. His name is
spelled four different ways in four successive censuses.
But armed with the family number and dwelling number from the microfilm, I
went back to the transcription and discovered that it had been transcribed
as Thomas Clayton. So if any of you all are out searching for a long, lost
Thomas Clayton of Jefferson County, TN based on the incorrect transcription,
I think I have found him for you.
