Ruth was a cousin of my father-in-law, James Carroll Clayton. She was a
sister to Arthur H. Clayton of Los Angeles, Guy, Frank, and Arxie/Artie?

A hole just opened in my brickwall. I received info on William/Willes
Clayton and some of his family in Los Angeles County, California. His son,
Arthur H., served 30 years in the L. A. Unified School District as
principal, and his daughter, Ruth Clayton PRICE, served in the same school
system as a clerk for 35 yrs. Copies of the last two's death certificates
were sent to me by a volunteer for the California Death Index CADI site on
rootsweb. Now to follow some leads these opened----

Hello Claytons
My 2G-Grandmother was Martha Clayton. She married Joshua Bell in KY about
1834. I found her first in the 1850 census of Jersey County, IL. IN this
census she has 9 children ranging from 14 down to 2 yrs of age.
Her age is given as 35 and birthplace as KY. The first two children were born
in KY, the next six in TN and the youngest in IL. There was one more child
born after this census, Martha Jane, and I discovered Martha's maiden name
from her daughters marriage record. This is the sum total of information I
have on my Clayton family. If any of you Clayton cousins out there can make a
connection for me I will be eternally grateful.

I, too, have been coming up against a brick wall as to locating descendents
of my husband's extended Clayton family. (note: This may help? Sarah
Clayton married Wesley Crawford.) The following letter is being published
in hopes of making a contact with some family member.
In Feb. 1953 a Frances Thomason, Denver, CO, wrote letter to my aunt:
Mother can't see to write so I will write here goes:
Your California trip sounds wonderful. We were going to take mother to
visit Tillie, her youngest daughter, but I have been ill. Tillie lives at
701
S. Willowbrook Ave. in Compton, a Los Angesles suburb.
Yes, Rosa Wilson was mother's sister, but she passed away, years & years
ago. Aunt Mary was the oldest. She married a Frank Mow. She was blind
several years before she died. All her children died in infancy. Aunt
Martha married a Goff. She raised 5 children and lost 5 in infancy. Their
names are Artie, Oscar, who live in Lincoln, NE, Howard, Elva, & Herbert.
Artie & Howard are living as far as known but none of the family know where
they are. Couldn't even notify them when Aunt Martha passed away. Elva
lives in Loup City, NE and I think Herbert does, too.
Uncle Charley has been gone several years. His widow is 87 years old.
Still lives in Pickering, MO. They had 2 children, Jimmie & Ruth CLAYTON.
I'm not sure where they live.
Uncle Johnny died quite a while ago, too. Aunt Daisy lives in Pasadena, CA.
They have Burdette in Idaho, Raymond in Oregon, Hazel & Lawrence in CA., &
we think Kenneth is in Idaho.
Aunt Rosa had Josie, in Maryville, MO., Clara in Clovis, NM., Charley in
Ravenwood, MO., Annice, we don't know where she is. Write to Stella
McDowell, another daughter of Aunt Rosa's & she can tell you all about Aunt
Rosa's family. She lives at Pickering, MO
(Willes' son?), Uncle Walter (CLAYTON?), passed away about 1940. He had 3
children. He lost his wife about a couple of years before he passed on.
Davis was the oldest child, & they lost him while he was still a young man.
Aunt Cora & Uncle Walter never got over his death. Myrtle the 2nd child is
married & has 2 children. She lives at Pagosa Springs, CO. Her name is
Jones. Cora May is Mrs. Wm. Tyson & she lives in Jamestown, CO. They have
no children.
Mother if the only one left. Several brothers & sisters died in infancy.
Mother has 3 children, Odessa Danford, (Denver, CO.) who has a son, a
daughter, & 3 grandsons; Sharon, my husband. (We have 3 daughters & 1 sons
& 5 grandchildren) The third is Pertilda Rockhill who has 2 sons and 4
daughters and 5 grandchildren.
I think cousin Annice's name was Harbison. She & her husband have been
separated for quite a while. He was an evangelist, and she is deeply
religious.
I hope I have cleared things up for you.
With Love & Best Wishes,
Frances Thompson
Denver, CO

If you haven't already found it, there is a site that covers the
counties of Johnson, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes, Surry and
Yadkin in NC and most of the counties of Southwestern VA, as well as
a couple in TN.
I did a search and came up with 68 matches for CLAYTON.
