I am searching out my Clayton and Dunn ancestors. My mother says she
received a letter once from an Aunt telling her that Clayton, MO was named
for a family who started that town, but I have not been able to confirm that
or find a connection to that Clayton. Some of the info to follow is sketchy
and I have very few dates. I would dearly love to find someone why may have
a connection to this Clayton line. I do know that John Walker and Cora
Elizabeth were in Miami Co, KS 1917-1918 as they filled out a WWI Draft
Registration Card in that county. And rumor has it they came to MO, then
moved onto KS from Virginia.

This little machine has sure been good to me lately, along with a
lot of good folks out there. Through this I have recently found two of
my
grandfather's brothers and their families; all of this came about within
six hours on the same day!! Hopefully, I can find some more of my
grandfather's brothers and sisters
I am now looking for John Milton Clayton, born 4 April 1851 in
Forsyth Co., GA. Last know whereabouts was in Forsyth County, in
1860, tho the family lived, at various times, in Forsyth, Henry, Clayton,
and Cherokee Counties, and was living in Fulton County during the Civil
War, apparently. His sister, Naomi M. Clayton, probably married in
Fulton Co. GA, but we have no records of that. She married a man named
Powell. These were the children of John M. Clayton and Amarilus Adaline
Clayton.
I would appreciate any information on the above. Thanks
Joe Parker

I can identify your Joseph. He is in A Study of the Claytons of
Monmouth Co NJ by Raymond Martin Bell, (which can be obtained from his
daughter, he just died, Martha Bell Butler Walnut Bend, 2071Bethel

helpful. I'm not connected with the Bells at all I got the info from
another lister, Bruce Cogan, who also recommended another book, which I
did not send for yet. Bruce said both are done well, but disagree with
each other a little on the early information. This takes the Claytons
back to England.

Doris,
This particular Joseph Clayton is documented in Raymond Bell's work on the
Monmouth co. Claytons.
Here is a skeleton descendancy for him.
1 Richard CLEAYTON / CLAYTON (~1625 - ) & Margaret --- ( - 1661)
| 1 David CLEAYTON (1661 - ) & Amie COOKE
| m. 1688
| | 1 David CLAYTON ( - 1748) & Esther TAYLOR
| | | 1 Joseph CLAYTON (1738 - ) & Sarah COMBS ( - 1812)
| | | m. 25 Apr 1761, New Jersey
| | | | 1a David J CLAYTON* (1773 - 1860) & Elsey --- (1772 - )
| | | | | 1 Joseph CLAYTON (1795 - 1855) & Lydia LOTT (1806 - )
| | | | 1b David J CLAYTON* (1773 - 1860) & Catharine STRICKLIN
| | | | m. 7 Jan 1798
Richard lived in Lancashire, England. He is recorded in the early records
of the Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. His son probably came first to Rhode
Island, then to Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., N. J.
I can provide you with more details if you are interested.

Anita,
I am corrently looking into the Welsh heritage of my Clayton family. They
were said to come from Wales in an article written about 100 years ago. My
Clayton family is not related to the Freehold Claytons, as far as I can
tell. Contact me, please and tell me more.

Sorry to take up space on the list with this is a shot in the dark, but
I've hit a brick wall with my husband's Claytons in Freehold, Monmouth
Co, NJ, in the 1840's and I'm desperate. Thought maybe someone would
recognize the oral family tradition story of the origins of the Claytons
passed down in our Clayton family, so that I could maybe put them in the
right branch of the Clayton family. It's probably all fantasized or made
up, but I thought maybe if other "cousins" have heard this story or a
variation of it, I could narrow my field of search. The story basically
goes like this:
A daughter of a Welsh nobleman fell in love with a stable hand and they
ran away to America to live, may have stolen a horse to do so. (1600 or
1700's)
I haven't heard of any Welsh Clayton connection, has anyone else?
Anything sound familiar?

You seem to be a seasoned veteran at this and I am just getting started. My
parents were both Claytons and it has been fun. My Dad's side is from Charles
Collier Clayton and NANCY Toney but Mom's side is a little less investigated and
so far no connection. Ggrandfather Abner H. married an indian girl, Fameau Ann
Ward and it would be great to track her but alas! that is not easy. Abner was
killed in a horse race dispute in Ark and his brother shot the man who killed him
and so on. By the way are we related. Thanks for your contribution to the
forum. Leota
