Gordon,
The LDS info in the Ancestral File is only as good as the people who send
it in, (as in every place), as it is a compiled source. ( The info in
the IGI is either from similar compiled sources when people send it in or
from extraction, which is usually primary, ie when the Vital records or
Church records of a place are gone over by volunteers and the information
extracted exactly as it appears) Both Ancestral File and IGI are indexed
at the website.
I once found info on the Ancestral File on ancestor where the wife would
have been 93 when the child was born, so take the info with a grain of
salt and use it as a road map for doing your own research. Some is done
very professionally, others just gathered carelessly.
Looks like three or more people have submitted info on those people that
you asked about, with conflicting info. If you go to the centers, and
use the computers, you can get the name and address of the person who
sent in the info. The addresses may be 15 years old from the looks of
the numbers, I'm not sure. Later ones started say with a AFN93 in the
number if it was submitted in 1993. Yours don't have the numbers, just
letters, so I think they are early submissions.
I haven't used the website much to be familiar with how it works there,
as I prefer to use the computers at the centers.
If you write to the addresses provided, hope it is a small town and add
at the bottom of the envelop something like "Or the family of" and hope
that the post office employee is caring and knowledgeable, in case the
family has moved or the person has died.
At the centers you can also check the history of changes to the info and
interested researchers options. You can also go to "edit" when on a
computer at the family history centers and type in your corrections,
they will be saved on a disk that you put in the machine, and then you
send by mail to Salt Lake, they will be included in the next edition of
the Ancestral File, which will probably be out about 2001, if things go
as in the past. They are not written to the CDs immediately.

It simply means someone submitted incorrect information to the
LDS Ancestral File without verifying the information. Don't
make the same mistake yourself.
The LDS IGI and Ancestral File are only clues and nothing
more and NOT a substitute for doing your own genealogical
RESEARCH!

Gordon,
Maybe I can take a shot to tell you what it means. I'm LDS and teach
Family History classes at church. The church encourages ALL members
to do their genealogy work (not just the ones who want to do it or are
good at it). So, some members submit meticulous, well-researched
records, while others write down what they've heard or copy something
they've seen somewhere, without ever verifying it.
Then all these people submit their information to the Ancestral File.
The church accepts information for the AF from anyone (including those
who aren't LDS) with "no strings attached" -- they don't check it for
accuracy, they just accept it and then make it available to the
public. It's then up to the Ancestral File user to sift through the
fact and fiction. So the Ancestral File is a great STARTING point;
it's most definitely a secondary source. The quality of the
information is in the hands of each submitter, so, as you can imagine,
the quality control varies greatly.
AF includes the submitter's names and addresses -- it might be worth
your while to contact them and ask to share information (including
sources!). There should also be a log of all the corrections that
have been made to each individual's information -- it's a good idea to
check that and see what changes have been made, and why. Sometimes
the sources are included in the reasons for the change. The
submitter's name should also be on the changes.
There are many, many mistakes in AF, so beware. I think it's still a
great resource, as long as it's used very carefully. In the past when
I've downloaded info from AF, I've put it in a separate file since I
don't want to mix in other people's "fiction" with what I've spent a
lot of time verifying.
Hope this helps.

Gordon Lane
I'm very late coming into the Clayton research. Would someone please explain
the William Clayton and Joan Smith connection? In the MD line their
progenitor appears to be William m to Joan ___.

See my web site listed below and the article I have written on
"Erroneous Clayton Research" under the Clayton surname page.
You are correct that no one has thus far proven the parentage
of William Clayton.

No! I do not have real proof of full line of Claytons. Guess I should have
said this is a good starting point for other that do not have any of it.
There is still debate about Anne Clayton who married Henry Landon Davies, was
she the daughter of John Clayton the botanist or the daughter of the
botanists son? Looks like she was daughter of the son.

William Lockhart "Will" Clayton, son of James Monroe and Fletcher
Burdine Clayton, was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on February 7, 1880.
To help his struggling family Will sent to work at age thirteen as a
clerk/typist in the county court house in Jackson, Tennessee. He
dropped out of school in the seventh grade yet was well educated through
constant reading. (In later years many of his contemporaries would
comment on his obvious education.) In 1885 he left home for St. Louis
where he worked for Mr. Jerome Hill, a cotton factor, and the next year
began working for the American Cotton Company in New York City.
On August 14, 1902 he married Susan Ada Vaughan at her home near
Clinton, Kentucky. Two years later he joined his brother-in-law Frank
Anderson in forming Anderson, Clayton & company. Fourteen years later
he moved to Houston, Texas where the company had reestablished their
headquarters.
Anderson, Clayton & Company soon became the worlds largest cotton firm
with operations world wide. Through his business dealings he became
known as an expert in economics and international diplomacy and was
called on to lend his expertise to the federal government in many
different capacities. On June 10, 1946 he was appointed as the first
Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs. As the Under Secretary
he was one of the main architects of the "Marshall Plan."
In 1958 he donated his home to the city of Houston and it is now the
Clayton Library. William Lockhart Clayton died February 9, 1966. His
wife Susan died January 7, 1960. Both are buried in Houston, Texas.
Their children are Will (died as an infant); Susan; Ellen; Burdine; and
Julia.

I keep running across a web site where the owner disproves an earlier
Clayton genealogy. I think that it deserves looking at before spreading
any line back to de Clayton. I will have to look for that site. Will
send the address when I find it.

All from England then all in Va. Will repost as original got messed up, hard

Have Clayton line back to year 1040. Started in Caudevec Normandy France,
then Lancashire England in 1066 after the battle of Hastings. Robert De
Caudevec was granted Manor of Clayton in England from William the Conqueror
as a reward for his services in the battle. He was then known as Robert De
Clayton.
Hi!
I have a little booklet prepared by some members of the Holly Springs
Baptist Church for the Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. The first
infomation is about the various buildings the church has occupied. The
first one belonged to a Mr. Hogan--1804. Pastor Austin Clayton. This is
some of the history from the booklet.
"Little is known of the early history of the church; however according
to legend the first group met and worshipped under a brush arbor.
Unfortunately the earliest records of the church were lost, but is known
that the log dwelling of a Mr. Hogen, located about a mile southeast of
the present church site and on property now owned by the J.R. Harleys
was used as a meeting place. This dwelling was probably used for a
number of years, as a large burying ground was located near the site.
This group became an arm of the Bethlehem church and evidently
functioned as a church as early or earlier than 1800, as in the minutes
of the church in 1859 a record is made of the death of a member, Frances
Clayton, who had been a consistent member of this same church for over
56 years and had been baptized by Austin Clayton, then pastor of
Bethlehem Church. Time has obliterated most of the evidences of this
old place of worship; the forests have overgrown the area and only a
pile of rocks that formerly marded the resting place of the members, now
remain as mementos of those days."
"The organization of the church took place in the year 1804 and was
accomplished mainly through the efforts of Austin Clayton."
The Frances mentioned above is my earliest known ancester. She was
married to Gowan Clayton Jr. Unfortunately I have not been able to
trace back any further. I know that Frances died in 1856 and that Gowan
died young. Sometime between 1826 and 1830. If anyone can help me with
Gowan or Frances' parents I sure would be grateful.
Betty Hilton
I have research on the Claytons of Warren Co IL. Haven't looked at it for
years.
Don't recall if I have any info on Kidd or Davis. Did they marry into the
Claytons?
If you think they did I'll dig out my research and look.
