Ponder this data and let me know what you think. I have John knox Clayton's
mother as Margaret Richey
who married William Clayton 25 Mar 1825. I do not have your Mordica but have
a Margaret and a Susan Matilda. What do you think?? Do you have descendancy
info and dates for John Knox?

THE VIRGINIA BRANCH OF THE CLAYTON FAMILY.
John Clayton, Attorney-General of Virginia, married ......., and had
issue (r) John Clayton, born at Fulham, England, 1685, and died in
Gloucester County, Virginia, 1773. He came to Virginia in 1705, was an
eminent botanist, a physician, a member of some of the most learned
societies of Europe, President of the Virginia Society for Promoting Useful
Knowledge, 1773; and author of ' Flora Virginica'. It appears that John
Clayton married Jan. 21, 1723, Elizabeth Whiting of Gloucester County.
Issue: Several sons and daughters. The eldest son was named John, another
named Jasper.
He was clerk of the Gloucester Committee of Safety 1774-5. He served in
the cavalry of the Revolutionary Army and married Courtney, daughter of
General John Baylor of New Market, Caroline, and had issue ( I ) Baylor; (2)
Arthur B., born I800, in Gloucester County, and died March 31, 1845; (3)
Caroline, (4) Courtney. A branch of this family was resident in New Kent,
descendants of Attorney-General John Clayton. Colonel William Clayton of New
Kent, a grandson of Attorney General John Clayton. was a member of the House
of Burgesses, from New Kent from 1769 (and perhaps earlier) to 1774; of the
Convention of 1776; of the House of Delegates of 1776 and other years, and
the Convention of 1788. Of the same branch was Colonel
Wm. Beverly Clayton, clerk of New Kent, 1787 to 1803 and later. Other
members of the family were Jasper Clayton, who married a daughter of Edmund
Berkeley of Barn Elms, Middlesex
County.
Arthur Clayton was a member of the House of Delegates from Louisa from
18l7-l8l8. Jasper S. Clayton was appointed Justice of Matthews in 1791, and
James and Joseph Clayton were living in Gloucester in 1840.
From these references it appears that John Clayton, the Attorney-General,
had at least three sons, John, Thomas and Arthur, and in all probability a
son named Samuel, for it appears by Slaughter's History of Culpepper County,
that Samuel Clayton, of New Kent, who is supposed to be a son of John
Clayton, the Attorney-General of Virginia, married Elizabeth Pendleton, a
daughter of Philip Pendleton, and as he is the first by that name he will be
called Philip Clayton ( I ). He married Anne Coleman. They had a son,
Samuel Clayton, who married his cousin, Anne Coleman, and among their
children was Major Philip Clayton II, an officer in the Revolutionary Army.
Philip Clayton I was the grandfather of Captain Philip Slaughter, another
officer in the Revolutionary Army. He lived at "Catalpa", Virginia.
Dan hope this helps

I searched the Clayton achieves and could not find any messages
regarding Susan Clayton Harkins.
>From the "Records of the Guthire Family" I found this:
"John Dunn settled in Meadville, Pa., where he married in 1805, Ann
Harkins.
Ann Harkins, his wife, was born in Hagerstown, Md, in 1789. She was the
daughter of Daniel and Susan (Clayton) Harkins. She died in Rockton,
Ill., in 1869. Susan Clayton was the daughter of William Clayton,
grand-daughter of William, and great grand-daughter of William Clayton,
Jr. William Clayton, Sr., arrived in the ship, "Kent," from London, as
one of the commissioners sent out by the proprietors of New Jersey. He
settled in Marckus Hook, where he became a rich and extensive
land-owner. He was a Quaker, and took a prominent part in political
affairs. He presided at the first court held in Pennsylvania under Penn,
Aug. 3, 1681, the day on which a government was first established for
the province of Pennsylvania."
Can any one on the list confirm or this information? Daniel and Susan
Clayton Harkins were my 3rd great grandparents.

Hi Group,
Does anyone know about a John Clayton, lived in Charles City Co., VA ca. 1710.
Later named Attorney General of State of VA. He knew William Byrd of Westover,
found him in the secret diaries of William Byrd in 1709 to 1712.
I would appreciate any assistance. Would like to know if John had a family,
and who his kids were.
Thanks,
Dan
The John M. Clayton and Amarilus (Clayton) Clayton Family Bible states
that
Naomi M. Clayton, born 14 Jan 1848 in Forsyth Co., GA, married a man by
the name of Powel(l) before June 1870, probably in Atlanta, Fulton Co.,
GA.
The Bible record further states that Seth Anderson Powel(l) was born on
the
24 Oct 1872, possibly in Fulton County, GA, or it could have been in
Clayton
or Henry County, GA. Mary Powel, possibly his grandmother, divided her
property in Henry County, with Francis Marion Clayton as a witness.
Naomi M.
Clayton had brothers, William C., John Milton, and Marquesda L. Clayton
(he
was always called Marcus) who remained in GA when their parents moved to
Texas in 1875 or 1876. Naomi M. Clayton had an uncle, Francis Marion
Clayton, who lived in Henry County for many years, but died in Atlanta on
16 Feb 1912.
Does anyone have any information on any of the above?
Joe Parker
Don,
I was in the Surrogates office in Freehold today and copied some of the
Estate Index. When I got home I noticed your Addie Mount name, and Sarah
(now Lloyd) and John Clayton in the Estate Index.
File # 3964, Clayton, John, U Freehold, Adm. - Sarah Clayton (now Lloyd)
and Addie Mount, Proceeding book 3, pg. 167, block 1. I don't know if
they honor requests by mail, copies are 25 cents, the files I was using
today were about 10-20 pages.

Hi, I too have been trying to find some Family members. I saw your page and
thought I would resond because, there are some names that are in my Davis,
Carver, Livingston Families. Oh, and have heard through the grape vine that
Clayton Family is connected. You have John Clayton and His Family, that have
names in my first names in my Family. Frances Ann Davis married Asbury
Livingston in AL in 1878, They had eight children. My Grandmother was one of
them. She married William Carver, her name, Luzzetty Livingston. They married
in TX, in 1905. Now they had three children, Lillian Dovie, 1907, Earl
Flecther, and my Dad, William David. They(Livingston, Davis) came from AL
around 1892-94, to TX. I was told that Frances Ann was from Tenn. not sure.
anyway. They then moved from Texas to New Mexico, after 1914. I do know that
Families tend to name children after other Family members. So when you look at
JOHN CLAYTON, and MY FRANCES DAVIS, you can see a first name pattern. We might
be conneted through John Clayton. What are the First names of you Davis Line?
Hope to hear, Carolyn

Betsy, here is what little I found:
A Joe Westmoreland that is a long time employee of a funeral home run by the
Baldwin family in Ecru.
In 1960, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Westmoreland became managers of County Home
Nursing Home. Some time later the name was changed from the County Home to
the Sunshine Rest Home. It looks like this is in Pontotoc.
At the turn of the century Randolph was a thriving and hustling community.
A. J. Westmoreland was Mayor. A. W. Westmoreland was alderman.
Long noted for its good school system, the community made its start in the
field of education in a little log house located where the present Alex
Westmoreland home now stands. (It doesn't say where that is other than this
is about the town of Randolph.)
I didn't find anything about Haley's. In the Union County History Book
there is an article about the William Jasper Clayton family. He was born 2
Jun 1847 in Benton Co, AL, the son of Lemuel Clayton born 1795 in Stokes Co,
NC and died between 1860 and 1870 Blount Co, AL and Neoma Hardin born 1806
in SC and died after 1870 in Cullman Co, AL. William married Columbia
Frances McKnight born 14 Mar 1851 in AL and died 15 Mar 1935 in MS.
Columbia was the daughter of Hugh McKnight born 1818 in SC and died 1863 and
Elizabeth Vandiver born 14 May 1819 in SC and died 31 Oct 1911.
There is more but it is mainly about William Jasper Clayton's descendants
and it is loooong! I could scan it in for you. There are some photos, one
made in 1900 and the other two taken in 1984.
Betty

Hello everyone: I have updated my Missouri Death index pages. I'm sorry to
say, I lost the gedcoms that were submitted to me along with much other info
when my computer went down. I would love it if you could resubmit your
info.
I have also added a search tool which should be funtional sometime today.
If you get a message saying the site needs to be indexed, please try again
later.
If you have any MO deaths in your family or have a site regarding MO deaths
or cemeteries, I would be glad to list the info.
The URL is http://members.tripod.com/Nettie_Mae/MOdeaths.htm
Please pass this email onto others who may be interested. Thank you,

It looks like we're cousins (2nd cousins to be exact).
Arthur (William Arthur Clayton b. 3-7-1874, d. 12-22-1964)
is also my great-grandfather. My grandfather is Grover (William Grover
Clayton b. 12-20-1900, d. 9-9-1964).

Please get back with me.

Don,
Raymond M. Bell's work, A Study of the Claytons of Monmouth Co., NJ.
mentions your people, pg 28. In giving the possible children of Thomas
b. 1710, d. 1757, Upper Freehold Twp, Monm. Co. ..........:
1) Moses Clayton b c1737d 1799 (Widow listed June 2, 1779) m c1763,

Thompson
Goes on to list Moses b 1737 poss. siblings ( says conjecture - the
names of the children of Thomas and Hannah)
You can get a copy from Raymond Bell, 1506 First Ave. N #3,,
Coralville, IA 52241, 39 pages typed, $10.00. does good job of trying
to straighten out all the branches.
I'm sure others on the list know more. Hopes this helps, I'm still trying
to link my husbands Claytons to the rest, but I've linked my own, which
come in about 7 generations back. I grew up in Upper Freehold and went
to part of grammar school in Imlaystown, not knowing at the time I was
part Clayton. There is an old Clayton Farm that is a park there now,
pretty place, highest spot around. Good luck.
