Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I'm still searching for parents & siblings (if any) of Henry CLAYTON, b.
1852 in England. An LDS Family Search shows a Henry CLAYTON christened
6 AUG 1852 at Braughing, Hertford, England. Parents are listed as Aaron
& Ann CLAYTON. Does anyone have any connections to this line? Would a
'Christening' date be the same as a birthdate?
Henry, age 17, was listed in the 1870 census of Sheffield twp., Lorain
co., OH. as a farmhand living in the household of George B. CREHORE.
In 1875, Henry married Abigail CHAPMAN in Lorain co., OH. They had a
son, Charles Henry CLAYTON in 1876 in OH. Henry then died in 1878 of
typhoid fever.
Is anyone else researching these CLAYTONs?

Mike, The best one to talk to about Cheshire Claytons
is Paul Ryley(a)lineone.net - he has them all (including
mine), also checkout the GENUKI site - best for

I have not seen anyone researching Clayton's in the United Kingdom. I
feel sure that someone else must be. I believe that James married Sarah.

Hi Ron,
If I guess correctly and she is the mother of Rosa Ray, then Mary Florence
> Clayton is my Great-Great Grandmother. I have a Social Security
Application
> for Rosa Ray Rowlett listing her parents as John K. Ray and Mary Florence
> Clayton. Rosa was born in Warren County on October 24, 1890.
****I would say that a Social Security Application is a great source.
Because it is filled out by
the individual themselves and not by someone else on behalf of them. I've
seen mistakes on documents
such as death certificates. But those are filled out by someone else (of
course) and sometimes I think
they guessed on things such as birthplace or age. Also the person giving the
information was probably
upset which can sometimes make for misinformation. So I would say your
source is one of the better ones.
I also know that the Claytons moved from KY to Franklin Co IL. But not all
the family stayed in Franklin Co., some
of them moved to Warren Co., IL and lived there for awhile and then some
moved to MO. Not sure how much
later some moved on to MO., I would have to look it up. My Clayton line
stayed in Franklin Co., IL.
The following is what I have for Mary Florence's father, mother and brothers
and sisters. I show her father, Austin Clayton,
as dying in Warren Co., IL. So he is one of the brothers who left Franklin
and moved on to Warren. I also show
Mary Florence as being a child of Austin's second marriage to Matilda Moore.
This Austin Clayton line is huge.
He had a total of 17 children. Most of the other Clayton researchers I've
run across on the Net are from this
line. Mary's half-sister Henrietta married James Thomas Ray. I am not sure
of the relationship to your Ray.
Unfortunately I don't have much information for Mary and John. But I hope
enough for you to be able to
connect your Mary and John to this Clayton family.
Austin Clayton was born in Spartanburg SC 09-20-1790. Austin died 10-1885 in
Warren Co., IL, at 94 years of age.
He married twice. He married Phebe Hogg 04-18-1816. Phebe died ca1840. He
married Matilda Moore in Edmonson Co., KY, 07-29-1841. Matilda was born in
Louisville, KY 1818. Matilda died 03-22-1895 in IL, at 76 years of age.
Austin Clayton and Phebe Hogg had the following children:
Andrew Clayton was born ca1819.
William Clayton was born ca1820.
Thomas Squire Clayton was born ca1825.
James Clayton was born ca1828.
Henrietta Catherine Clayton (#122) was born in KY ca1831. She married
James Thomas Ray 4-21-1847.
Isaiah Clayton (#125) was born in KY 4-10-1833. Isaiah died
12-15-1859 at 26 years of age.
Wiley Clayton was born ca1836.
Garland N Clayton (#128) was born in KY ca1839. Garland died
1850-1859 at 11 years of age.
Austin Clayton and Matilda Moore had the following children:
Stanford Clayton was born 9-23-1842.
Woodford Clayton was born 12-23-1845.
Columbus Buford Clayton was born 4-18-1847.
Sarah Ann Clayton was born in IL 10-23-1848. Sarah died 10-29-1868 at 20
years of age.
John Foster Clayton was born 10-22-1850.
Nancy Ann Clayton was born in IL 1854.
Virginia Clayton was born in IL 04-08-1856. She married George Talley.
Susan Ann Clayton was born in IL 10-1858.
Mary Florence Clayton was born in IL 06-20-1860. She married John Ray.
The following is what I have on Austin's father, mother, brother and
sisters. This would be Mary Florence's Grandparents.
Augustine Clayton was born in Chester Co., SC March 4, 1755. Augustine died
June 10, 1835 Warren Co., KY, at 80 years of age. He married Catherine
Smith. Catherine died ca 1830-1835 Warren Co., KY.
Augustine Clayton and Catherine Smith had the following children:
Sarah Clayton was born in SC. She married Blackley Goodall.
Robert Clayton.
Susan Clayton
William Clayton was born ca1783.
Nancy Clayton was born in SC ca1786. She married Robert Spillman in KY,
09-22-1806.
Elizabeth Clayton was born in SC ca1786. She married William Cockrill
in KY, 04-17-1806.
Austin Clayton was born 09-20-1790.
Rhoda Clayton was born in SC ca1791. She married Ephriam Berry in KY,
12-03-1811.
Sally Clayton was born in SC ca1795. She married Edward Goodall in KY,
06-01-1815.
Foster Clayton was born 1797. ********This is my line.
Thomas Clayton was born Feburary 1800.
I have more information on some of Austin's childrens lines and on his
brothers lines but I don't want to give you information overload. We'll
save that for later.
I am also in touch with a couple of other Clayton cousins who I'm sure will
be happy to hear we have a new cousin to
welcome into our Clayton researching family.
I'm new at this genealogy research, so I'm not sure how to verify if your
cousin is my
> Great-Great Grandmother. If you would like, I can give you all the

**********Yes please send me your information. I will be happy to help you
in anyway that
I can. I will look through my files and check to see if I have any more
information for Mary and John.
>>>It would be really cool if we're relatives.
*******It looks to me as if we are. I'm unaware of there being another
Clayton family in
Warren Co IL except for this one. I'm pretty sure all Claytons in that area
hook up to this family.

I'm working on my genealogy. One of my great grandmothers was Rosa Ray,
who married Frank Arthur Rowlett. I've just discovered that her mother
was Mary Florence Clayton married to a John K. Ray. That's all the
information I can find. Does anyone have any information on Mary
Florence Clayton?
Thanks,
- Ron

Her name was Mary CLAYTON and she married John BEALS within the
Society of Friends (Quakers) with permission from the Chester
Monthly Meeting:
Declared marriage intentions 2 8th month 1682 at Chester MM, PA
Announced marriage intentions 2nd time 1-11th month-1682 Chester MM,
Chester Co., PA
The records of Chester MM do not indicate the actual date the
marriage took place but we know it was probably within a week or
two after 1st day 11th month 1682 which according to the Gregorian
calendar that is now in use would be February 1683.
In the 25 years I have researched descendants of this couple, I
have never seen any primary documentation that Mary had a middle
name.
Please see my web site listed below which contains further information
on both the Clayton and Beals families.

Sorry, you are not the only ones on the list. We have had
numerous complaints from our 500 subscribers regarding the
Test Message and numerous responses. I have posted that
if you wish to respond to that message you should do so
privately. Your response was seen by 500 pairs of eyes. :-(
Let's please limit your messages to the list which concern
Clayton genealogy.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi List,
Does anyone have any information about Mary Jane Clayton who married
John
Beals August 2, 1682 ? The Beals were Quakers and I think the Claytons
were too.
Thank You,
Ronda
Hi T.A.,
Hear you loud and clear. I think we are the only ones here.

There is no need to send a TEST message to any board but
people do it from time to time I suppose to see if they
are still subscribed. If in doubt, they should SUBSCRIBE
again to the list and if they are not currently subscribed,
they soon will be. If they are still subscribed they should
get a message back saying ALREADY SUBSCRIBED.
With a list this size with over 500 members, there is
a great deal of traffic and if the person is subscribed
they will see messages coming from the list.
If they doubt their messages are getting to the list,
they can send a query regarding their Claytons
to the list and watch to see if it appears on the list.
If other subscribers see a TEST message, they should NOT
respond back to the list saying they saw the message but
if they wish to do so they may reply directly to the sender
through private email. Remember, when you hit your
reply button, your reply is going back to the entire
list.
The last thing we need is 500 people responding to the
list that they saw the message! This wastes much needed
space on the host servers which archive each message and
usually irritates 499 other subscribers including your
listowner. :-(

Look people, if you send a test message to the list with a subject line
like:
TEST
and you get a message that says it's from you with a subject line that looks
like:
[CLAYTON-L] TEST
you've succeeded in subscribing to the list.
If you feel you must reply to the people sending the test message, send THEM
an email,
not the list. Their email-address is in the the 'From' box of the email. If
you just hit reply,
you are sending the reply to the list, creating unwanted traffic.
