Frances and Bev,
Thank you both for your reply to my Joseph Clayton, b. 1842, Freehold,
Monmouth, NJ. You have both given me interesting family connections,
with the VanNotes and Thompsons and great info on all those Josephs to
sort through. I had some of it as bits and pieces, but not all connected
into families. Thanks. Will let you know when I figure it out.

Hi, my husband's Clayton's are from Alabama and Georgia. I have a lot of
information on them. Send
me some diffinant dates and maybe I can help you.
I'll be glad to share if it is your same family. I know
one branch of my husband's Clayton's used the name
Middleton as a middle name, as this was a maiden
name of one of the wives. I'll be looking forward to
hearing from any of you who may have Claytons from
Georgia and Alabama. Marie

My notes have a John Wesley Clayton, b. 1818, d. 23 May, 1869, the son of
Thomas Middleton Clayton, b. 1785, d. 23 May 1869, Manningtown, W.Va. I
presume that one of these two death dates is a copying error. If this is
the correct person, there is more information about Thomas Middleton
Clayton's ancestors.

Anita -- Your message caught my eye because of the Freehold location and
then, when I saw the mention of Henry VanNote, I got quite excited. I have
in my ancestry an Elsie or Elsey Clayton (b. Mar. 16, 1805, Monmouth Co.,
NJ; d. Oct. 23, 1885, Brick Twp., Monmouth Co.) who married Cornelius
VanNote. Her parents were David Clayton (b. May 3, 1773, Monmouth Co., NJ;
d. July 19, 1860, in Howell Twp., Monmouth Co.) and Catherine Stricklin
(dau. of Jonathan Stricklin and Elinore Taylor). David Clayton fought in
the War of 1812. This information comes from some research done by my
aunt, now deceased, and I haven't verified it, nor do I know her sources.
It does sound to me as if your Joseph Clayton most likely belongs to this
family. Perhaps David was his father or uncle. I hope you'll let me know
it you find out more about the family.

You don't mean Mary Clayton born 1680 who married Robert Coleman do you???
James Clayton
Hi Anita,
thanks for responding. I know the feeling of waiting for something--esp.
from a govt. agency!!
Most of my Clayton info is sketchy. Actually, there are 3 Claytons that
could probably all be the same family. The Charles Henry Clayton married to
Elizabeth, was an innkeeper in Millstone twp. One of their sons, Joseph J (or
A) I have nothing on--still in the process of looking for all the kids.
Charles's father, I think was Stephen. Found in the census 1850 in Millstone
twp. Stephen and hannah with their children, Charles H., Mary C 13yr.,Joseph J
10yr., Abraham 8yr., and Alfred L. 1yr.
My third Clayton/Cleaytons are mostly from Freehold twp./ Ocean co. If my
husband hadn't "erased" my file I could send that line to you. In process of
putting everything back in.
Anyway, this is what I found in my notes:
Joseph Clayton of Freehold twp. married to Martha E. Thompson d.o. James and
Amey -Ann Thompson of jackson twp. Joseph is son of Edward H. clayton.
Joseph was 24yr. and Martha was 19yrs. dated 10-20-1862
the only other Joseph I have in the same or near same time frame is:
Joseph Clayton jr. of Freehold, will dated 11-11-1813. wife Eleanor, grandson
John Clayton, daughter Hannah Taylor, grandson Richard Sutphen, grandaughter
margaret Van cleave, children: Jonathon,JOSEPH, Isabel Sutphen, mary Sweetman,
Catherine Dey, margaret Costler and heirs of his deceased daughter Ann taylor.
One more, Joseph s.o. Cornelius and hannah clayton b. 8-5-1862
Lidia Maria b. 7-18-1864 d.o. Cornelius and Hannah
Clayton (from Bible records)
Annie Clayton is a big blank for me. I have no dates or place or
origin. Only that she married Samuel Stewart. This is my mothers side(other
Claytons are my Dads) but since they were all around Mon../Ocean co. could
very well be the same family. She is really a puzzle!
If you had Claytons living in Millstone, they may be related.
families tended to band together . Also, there might be some connection with
my Freehold Claytons, but my latest is 1725. Have nothing later on that
Clayton branch.
Found in my thompson book: The Martha Thompson and Joseph clayton
mentioned above, m. 10-20-1862 had the following children; Catherine ann, m.
Conover Reynolds, Ellsworth 1868-1944 m. Jennie Clayton, Charles H.T.
1869-1936 m. Margaret Hulse, Ella Jane 1873-1944 m. John Luker, and Janet m.
Joseph D. Thompson.
That is my total of Josephs. Will keep looking for him. Bev
Bev,
I'm fairly new to the Clayton list. Saw your postings about the
Millstone, Monmouth Co, NJ Claytons. I'm looking for my husbands great
grand father's family in Freehold area, not far away. They had some
family connections with Millstone.
I hadn't put in a posting on our Joseph Clayton yet as I was waiting to
hear from the National Archives on military records, for poss. more
info. Our Joseph Clayton, was b. 1842, Freehold, parents unknown. We
just recently found his grave in Maplewood, Freehold, Monmouth Co. NJ.
and that he was a Private in the 29th Co E. NJ Vol, in the Civil War.
Just this morning, after a 2 month wait, I got a letter from the
National Archives requesting $15.00 to copy the 37 pages in his file. I
had originally sent my credit card info with specific instructions to
send the complete file, so that I would not have to wait again. Now I
have to wait another 8 - 10 weeks, I'm really annoyed with the National
Archives. I want those 37 pages now!! Surely they will have his parents
names. The letter reads as if they were sending selected pages from the
file, which they did not send. Thanks for listening to my venting, I
feel better now :-)
Your mention of two Joseph Claytons in your two postings, about the right
age and area caught my eye. Have you followed them through the census
years? I have collected a lot of Clayton census pages for Monmouth and
some for Ocean co and Middlesex Co. hoping someday to connect our
Joseph. Maybe I have something that will help you. I'm sure I remember
that Australia name. Give me time to go through them if you haven't. I
also have copies of several Clayton Bible pages that I made from the
Bible Records File at Rutgers University, Alexander Library, Special
Collections, in New Brunswick, hoping to connect someday. I'll have to
dig them out to look for your names. (Anyone working on NJ names
{mainly, but not exclusively, central NJ} should check that file, it's
wonderful, they have books and books of Bible records.)
Your info is kind of sparse, could you tell me more? Especially about
the Joseph J. son of Stephen and Hannah and Joseph A. son of Charles and
Elizabeth. Maybe one of them is our Joseph. (My husband's father and
grandfather were Joseph A. Clayton (A for Aloysius), Henry shows up also
as his great grandfather's middle name, see ahead) Also, how does the
Annie Clayton, ca. 1826 who married Samuel Stewart who you mentioned
fit in?
My Clayton info is sparse too. Seems they rarely ever recorded any life
events in vital stats! Joseph Clayton was such a common name, also.
I've collected a lot on his son Marcus as that is so unusual a name,
makes tracing so much easier.
