Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The list presently has 194 subscribers (162 mail mode and 32 digest)
including many new members. For both old and new members, please
review and save the following:
Welcome to the CLAYTON mailing list! If you are currently subscribed in
"mail mode", which means that you receive every posting made to CLAYTON
as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode
are given below.
1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to
CLAYTON-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
that contains (in the body of the message) the command
unsubscribe
and no additional text.
2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd
not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance,
if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you
want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to
CLAYTON-L-request(a)rootsweb.com.
3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and
sent to you together as a single large message). There are two
steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to
CLAYTON-L-request(a)rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second,
send the command "subscribe" to CLAYTON-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
to start receiving digests.
4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.
All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe
when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them
to start again, simply subscribe again.
5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to CLAYTON-L(a)rootsweb.com. It
will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.
You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
6. All messages must relate to CLAYTON genealogy. Chain letters,
virus alerts, and advertisments are not acceptable. Flamers and
those who respond to flame wars will not be tolerated and will
be removed from the list.
7. Please make sure the subject line reflects the content of
your message. Our subscribers prefer to see a given name, locality
and date in the subject line if appropriate.
8. Be aware that replies are automatically sent back to the
list in order to further discussion of the subject matter. If
you wish to send a message to only a certain person, you will
need to change the "To:" line.
9. Before sending your first message to the list, please
check your software to insure that you are using plain text.
Messsages written in HTML or Mime will be automatically rejected
by the Rootsweb filters and returned to you.
10. We also ask that you send no attachments to your messages.
If you have a GEDCOM or other large file to share, please
announce it's availability and ask people to contact you by
private e-mail to receive it. GIFS and other graphics should
not be sent to the list.
11. If you have further questions regarding the list or how
to become a Rootsweb Member or Sponsor, please contact your
listowner: cheska(a)ix.netcom.com.
12. Please save this message for your future reference.
We all welcome you to the CLAYTON list and look forward to your
active participation. Enjoy!

Bruce and all:
Just returned from vacation so trying to catch up. The third book on Bruce's
list is available at the state library in Trenton, NJ and it has some very
good information in it. Unfortunately we didn't find a link to our Mary
Clayton who married Thomas Mount and moved to Hunterdon County, NJ, then to
Harrison Co., VA (now WVA) and then on to Shelby Co., KY.
We found her grave stone last week just outside of Shelbyville, in the road
right of way. Someone has put some railroad ties around the two graves which
are under a huge old hickory tree. Unfortunately the tree is dying and I
really worry about those two graves and the ancient stones. Thomas died in
1818 and Mary in 1815!
Pat Mount
Looking for anyone that has a Robert Clayton on their tree. Robert Clayton
was living in either Ohio or Indiana in l805 as that is when his daughter (my
GG Grandmother) was born. Her name was Priscilla Clayton. I have alot of
information on Priscilla but nothing on her father but his name of Robert. In
her obit of l898 it said she was born in l805 in Rainsville, Ohio. However,
I could not find a Rainsville listed for Ohio. Thanks so much. Ida E-mail

My previous posting seemed of sufficient interest that I thought I would
say a bit more about searching for books about New Jersey Claytons.
Several months ago I searched ancestry.com's list of some books accessioned
by the Library of Congress. I found three that looked interesting: two by
Raymond Bell:
Some New Jersey Families: Bunn...Clayton... (Washington, Pa., 1983).
and
A Study of the Claytons of Monmouth County (Washington, Pa, 1988),
and a third by Theresa Klaiber:
Clayton Connections, a Researchers Guide to New Jersey Clayton Ancestors
(New Concord, 1984)
I discovered that there is a copy of the first book at the Allen Co. Public
Library in Ft. Wayne. It contains 6 typescript pages of listings of
descendants of Edmund Clayton (1600-1657) through his sons Richard
(ca1625-) and John (ca 1631-1704). The author states that his Clayton
information is based, in part, on articles by J Wilber Clayton that
appeared in the Monmouth Democrat (Freehold, N. J.) in about 1940.
The second book, as I reported before, I haven't seen.
The author of the third book, Theresa Klaiber (email: tklaiber(a)wwd.net)
sent me the following information about her book:
> Bruce the publication is out of print - CLAYTON CONNECTIONS.
> However, this was done before computers and I have the master - could
>make >a spiral bound copy for 10.00 and whatever the postage would be.
>Let me >explain the publication.
>Because of the mass of Clayton's in New Jersey it is a guide to records
>available on the family.
Secton 1 New Jersy B 1848=1878 2 Marriage Record extractions 3
>Deaths 1848-78 4 Probates 1700-1900 5 Monmouth gravestones 6
>Military Records 7 Tax lists 8 Land Records 9
> "Clayton Tidbits" extractions from papers, etc. Fully indexed.
Note that this book does NOT contain lineage-linked data. It is simply a
compilation of records, or abstracts of records, from a variety of sources.
The author's preface states: "In no way is this an attempt to give a
complete family history... It is a tool to place members of families in the
correct locations. In fact, much of it is an extended index of materials
available to the public in the New Jersey State Archives." It is 80 pages
long (including the index).

Ginny,
Could I be so rude to ask you to print out the pages for David Clayton
of Monmouth for me if you do order the film and make copies for others?
I'd be happy to pay for the copies. It is just too hard to to to a FHL
with my two little ones :>)

Hello Bob, Bruce and Mina!
I checked the FHL catalog and they have a 28 page book by Raymond Martin
Bell called "Some New Jersey Families" - this book includes some pages
the lines of "John Clayton of Burlington c1631-1704" and "David Clayton
of Monmouth 1661-1730. The description says "The heads of the families
are given with county residence and dates of birth and death". The
publication info states Washington PA, by R.M.Bell in 1983.
Apparently this book has been filmed and put on microfiche - it is fiche
number 6088599 and you should be able to order it from any LDS FHL for a
small fee (I think about 15 cents!). I am going to order a film from my
FHC very soon - I can order this as well and print off any pages you are
interested in. Let me know!

Hi James and Susan -
Thank you for responding to my posting! I am Matthew Hilt Murphy's third
cousin - we both decend through Tylee's daughter Margaret Louisa Clayton,
who married Elijah Hoffman. I have the Information Matthew and his wife
Mary researched, and I asked them how they were able to verify Tylee's
parents. Unfortunately they haven't been able to verify the connection -
it is circumstancial based on the fact that John Clayton Jr's mother was
Mary Tylee. I am seeking something else other than the name Tylee to
verify this info.
They are wonderful researchers though and have kept great records of
their sources of information.
I also question that Tylee was not related to the other three Claytons
that he lived next to in 1830 - it seems there likely had to be some kind
of a connection.
Susan - which of the other three Claytons are you related to? I will
check out the web site too - thanks!
James - is your information from Matthew Murphy as well? Do you decend
from one of Tylee's children?
Thank you again for responding!

Dear Ginny,
As far as I know, Tylee is not related to the other three Claytons. I am
related to them.
A cousin, whom I met on the net, has my Clayton family listed on his web
page. The address is
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/4694/moorhope.html.
I have information from Matthew Hilt Murphy, who is related to Tylee. Let
me know exactly what you need, and I will see if I can find it for you. Mr.
Murphy is a genealogist who sells information on different Clayton
families. I can give you his address if you want.
Nice to meet you.

Hi Ginny
Tylee was the son of John Clayton b:abt 1757 and Mary Pritchard. John is
the son of John Clayton b:abt 1732 and Mary Tylee.
Which of Tylee's 10 children do you descend from?

The following was posted to a list I belong to, I thought it was
appropriate so I'm sending it to the lists I manage.
---------------------------------------------
The accounting of Rootsweb's operating expenses for last year is almost
done, (I know it is LATE, but they have been very busy)
It seems the expenditures last year outstripped the income by a factor
of almost 2:1.
I know you have heard this sort of thing before, and the list members
know I harp on this regularly.
Rootsweb provides a "complementary" service, and is wholly sponsored by
member's contributions. The management of this list is a privilege
granted by Rootsweb.
The Basic fact is that out of pocket expenses for those people who keep
the whole thing going, Karen and Brian, exceeded donations by about
$50,000, just in the last year. They have been going like this for
several years. You REALLY got to love something a lot to do this.
Many of the members of this list are SPONSORS in their own right, and
there are several LISTOWNERS who are members of this list as well, we
have a large base of knowledge here.
I am asking all members to meet my challenge of a minimum donation to
Rootsweb of $12, that is a DOLLAR a MONTH, the "normal" suggested
membership fee.
Those who are sponsors and sustaining members have my thanks for your
support.
Those who truly cannot afford to contribute are welcome to continue
using the services at the FREE rate, as it is Rootsweb policy to provide
the service at the minimum cost possible. And make the service
accessible to those who cannot afford the "donations." NO Hard
Feelings, we mean it. No guilt trip either.
Those who can contribute, without suffering enormous personal financial
pain, please do so.
This is equivalent to three postage stamps a month.
This is 1 20 ounce bottle of your favorite soft drink.
This is a cup of coffee with your breakfast at the corner diner.
2 doughnuts
a morning newspaper (Sunday)
A gallon of gasoline.
1/2 a pack of cigarettes.
Anyone see a relationship they can conceive?
Thanks,
