Claytons from Culpeper VA, KY, IL to Green Co. Wisconsin
by Cynthia Claytonroberts
My CLAYTON ancestors settled in Culpeper, VA, vestrymen of St.
Mark's Church there. Philip & Ann (COLEMAN) Clayton were the parents of
Samuel Clayton who married Ann COLEMAN (II)...a cousin of Ann I and the
daughter of Robert & Sarah Ann (SAUNDERS) Coleman, I believe. Sam had two
sisters according to his father's will, Lucy and Susannah. His offspring
include Phillip Clayton Jun.r who married Mildred BELL; Robert Coleman
Clayton; George Price Clayton, and Nancy Clayton who married Jeremiah STROTHERS.
George Price Clayton, my direct ancestor, married Rebecca FIELDS,
which may have been a second marriage. They had two of their children in
Bourbon County, Kentucky: Louisa Clayton b. 30 Sep 1823 who married Hezekiah
SHELTON; and my direct ancestor Samuel Thomas Clayton b. 22 Jun 1825 also in
Bourbon County. The family then moved to Crawford County, Illinois, where
George died on 6 Jun 1838. George and Rebecca's children born in Illinois
were: Syrophia Ann Clayton b. 3 Jan 1827 who married Amos FORD, bearing 6
Ford children, Rebecca, Melville, Hazael, Maria, Samuel, and Abner; Harriet
Clayton b. 3 Oct 1828 who married James MIDGETT, bearing 3 Midgetts, Mary
A., George P., and William R.; Elisabeth Clayton b. 26 February 1831 who
married John Tolson LINDSAY and had so many children they ran out of
names....Leander, Samuel T. who married Mary E. HARRIS; Sarah Ann "Sally"
Lindsay; Nathaniel F. Lindsay m. Nancy BRISTOW & Phoebe LINDSAY & Effie
HUGHES; Eliza Lindsay; D.Y.Lindsay & maybe 6 more; Minerva Clayton b. 22
Feb 1833; George P. Clayton born 16 Oct 1835; and William Clayton b. 30 Mar
1838. Rebecca survived George and married William Washington Rash and had 3
more children.
Samuel Thomas Clayton grew up and married Elisabeth SIMMONS b. 1 Nov
1824, the daughter of Demsey & Mary (MOORE) Simmons who had migrated to
Lawrence County, Illinois from Greene County, N.C. Their daughter Libby
Clayton was born 21 August 1860 in Washington Township, Green County,
Wisconsin, dying of the measles ten days after my Grandmother Nelle was
born. Libby Clayton was married to my GGrandfather Jacob BAUMGARTNER.
Does anyone connect with this line? I am missing direct
verification other than family bible notes and folklore between George Price
Clayton and Samuel of Culpeper. The gap is in Kentucky. And as someone
recorded in the group archives the Samuel Claytons of Virginia are confused.
I believe the other one married Susannah and died in or before the
Revolution. That Samuel Clayton appears to be of Frederick, VA.
Whew!
