I have just discovered my CLAYTON line, and therefore do not yet know
who Joseph CLAYTON's parents were. I would love to hear from other
Spartanburg Co SC CLAYTON researchers (possible cousins!). If anyone
has Etowah Co AL CLAYTONs I'll be glad to help you.... I am from Etowah
Co (lived there 26 of my 30 yrs) and though I now live in Birmingham, AL
I do go "home" to see my family.

Evidently, Julie, Claytons come in discreet packages. I spent yesterday at
one of our genealogy librarys using the LDS Ancestral File and the IGI, and
couldn't find a one of mine. Someone has to link up some how. As near as I
can tell, our Clayton line ended with my grandfather. Anyway, here they are
again. Maybe some of those MO Clayton/McCausland descendants will recognize
someone.

Hi Fellow Clayton Researchers,
My gg-grandfather, Stephen A. Clayton, was born in 1828 in Georgia. He
was married 3 times, the first time to Emily Elizabeth Shadix (my
gg-grandmother -- and reported to be of Danish descent) in 1847, then to
Elizabeth Cash, and then to Molly Burns. He died some time after 1880.
He was reported to be of Swedish descent and had a brother named Jeff
Clayton. Stephen went to California during the Gold Rush, gound gold,
and later sold his claim.
He and Emily had two children, Tommy Clayton, and my great-grandmother,
Emeline Jane Clayton. She was born August 9, 1848 in Barnesville, Lamar
County, Georgia. She married William Raford Jarrett -- a veteran of the
Civil War -- who was the son of Ralph Raford Jarrett and Sarah "Sallie"
Wright Jarrett. Emeline and William Raford moved to Texas some time
around 1880 and settled in Cass County in far East Texas around the
Cusseta community. Emeline died September 22, 1901, and is buried in the
Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Cass County, Texas. A distant cousin
was told by her grandfather (my great-uncle) that Emeline was a well
educated woman, and could read the Bible in Greek.
Family history has it that Stephen's son, Tommy Clayton, was the mayor of
Barnesville, GA at one time, but I have no idea whether that is true.
Emeline and William Raford Jarrett had 5 children, their first being
William Jefferson Jarrett, my grandfather. He married my grandmother,
Nancy Elmina Wallace in 1893, and they later moved to Kaufman and then to
Denton County, Texas. Their youngest child, Clara Mae Jarrett, is my
mother. She was born May 10, 1915.
Stephen Clayton and his second wife, Elizabeth Cash, had a son and 3
daughters. Cash E. Clayton, was born in April 1875. He married Laura
Tidwell in Henry County, GA on November 17, 1907. She was the daughter
of Henry Tidwell and Sarah "Sallie" Jarrett. He and Laura had 5
children, William Clayton, born May 1909, Robert Clayton, Emmett Clayton,
Thomas Clayton, and Kate Clayton.
The daughters of Stephen Clayton and Elizabeth Cash were Edna; Susie,
born 1876; and Mary, born 1878.
If any of these folks sound familiar, please contact me. We would love
to find any descendants of these folks and we would be happy to exchange
information with anyone.

Has anyone ever seen the booklet called "Some Account of the Clayton
Family, of Thelwall, Co. Chester: Afterwards of St. Dominick's Abbey,
Doneraile and Mallow, Co. Cork. A Paper Read Before the Historic Society
of Lancashire and Cheshire, 4th March, 1880" by J. Paul Rylands, F.S.A.,
&c.?
About 10 years ago I found this booklet in the Detroit Public Library's
Burton Historical Collection, and I had copies of some of the pages made.
It starts with Randal or Radulph or Ralph, son of Adam de Clayton, who
possessed land in Thelwall in the late 1200s and early 1300s.

Hi Clayton researchers: I just checked my subscription list and I am
pleased to say we have 62 subscribers. Thats the good news. The not so
good news is not many people seem to be sharing their information. The
purpose of the list is to share the information on the lines we are
researching. The list is only as good as the information that is
submitted to it.
Having said that, the information that I am researching is as follows.
If anyone has information on this line, would love to hear from you.

I am seeking information about a Thomas Clayton who first appears in 1788, buying land at Roaring Creek, Catawissa Twp., Nortumberland Co., Pa. (This is now in Franklin Twp., Columbia Co., Pa.) He apparently lived there the rest of his life. His will is dated 1820 and he died in 1831. Claytons remained in the area until at least 1856, when Thomas's grandson Thomas (son of William) moved to Lee Co., Illinois, and sold land to a younger brother Wellington Clayton.
I think it likely that this Thomas Clayton is connected to the Quakers of Chester Co., Pa, as there was a meeting established in Catawissa, and a meeting house built in 1796. One of Thomas' land transactions was a purchase in 1813 from John Cleaver, who (or his namesake) was a Quaker from Chester Co.
There appears to have been a second Thomas Clayton in the area who, in 1796, sold land at nearby Chillisquaque that his father Asher Clayton had purchased in 1770 from an Edward Clayton.
Any help in sorting out the families of these CLaytons will be greatly appreciated!

Denise,
Hi, long time no contact.
You are right, there is no connection at present between Sussex and Lancashire
Claytons. However, I shall be going to Sussex soon for Clayton research for the
Clayton One Name Study. I think there may be a connection with the parish of
Clayton in Sussex. I think it is significant but I can't prove anything yet.
Please keep in touch.
Anyone else with Clayton connections here in England I can help. There is a
large amount of American Clayton mail going about at the moment. I hope to reply
to most of it next week if I get time.
Regards,
Robert Clayton

It's been awhile so here's my line again.
Clayton family
1. Thomas CLAYTON b. c1500, Rudgwick Parish, Sussex, England, m. Margaret
?. There is no proven
connection between this Clayton family and the Clayton's of Lancashire and
Yorkshire, England. His will
was made in Rudgwick parish 1557-Jul-04, proved 1557-Oct-05. The will contains
no signatures and has
no witnesses. The writer was probably Roman Catholic. It names his wife
Margaret, son John, daughter
Alice, and son-in-law ? Nalovite.
Children:
2. i John CLAYTON b. c1525.
ii Alice CLAYTON b. c1545. married to ? Nalovite.

died bef 10 sep 1630.

born to Margaret ? William may have been the son of Elizabeth Booker.

dated 1610-Dec-01.

Pancras Parish,
Chichester, Sussex, England. This should put his death later that 1644.
Perhaps the will is from a
different William Clayton. Boxgrove Parish is near Chichester. The signatures of
William Clayton and his
son William Clayton appear on a 1641 House of Commons statement from Boxgrove.
Children:

was born abt 1636. Since he was baptized in 1632, the 1625 birth date has been
used. Prudence:
According to a GEDCOM file from CompuServe, Prudence's last name is Lanckford.
The Lyle Hadley

information has been provided on

name. She was of St. Peter
