Thanks, Julie. I knew that he had been Postmaster. I think it also had
another name...but its FINAL name, as I understand it, was FT. PAYNE, AL
I believe that I told you he also owned a railroad there. I think it went
from Montgomery...thru Ft. Payne...and on North. He sold it to the U.S.
Army. Part of the record is in the OLD "O" Book. The other part was in the
"O 1/2" book, which was missing, when I was last back there. They had no
idea where it was. I need to go back again. People there were very nice to
me. Cyrus Putnam Clayton was not liked after the war. He had sided with the
North and moved to the Chicago area and worked with Mr. Pullman of the
Pullman Sleeping Cars. When he returned to the South, he had lots of
problems. He was totally a super religious person. Mr. Pullman was, from
what I have read, not a good man. He was not good to the people, who worked
for him.
My mother was a TX Postmaster for 38 years. I was a TX Postmaster for
1-1/2 years. My stepfather was acting Postmaster for a few years.
Thank you for the news! Nelouise

Thanks for sending me the file, but I am not able to read it for some

Hi
I am a descendent of Frances Huel Clayton, b.abt. 1803 in KY and married
to Elizabeth Bourland. They lived, at least for a time, in Kentucky but
both died in Logan Co., IL.
Would their be any mention of them in your book?
If so will there be enough books printed so that I can purchase one? I
find a lot of Clayton inquiries on the "net" so I'd expect there would
be many request for it.
Hopefully for any info,
Wes Cherry
In the 1850 census for Cherokee Co., AL is Solomon CLAYTON age 39, a
carpenter, born TN, wife, Minerva, age 39, born TN, three individuals are
living with them who may or may not be children: Ann 'Brandon' (could be
Brouden? or?) age 15, born AL, Easter (?) Brandon (?), age 11, born AL,
Samuel Bolter (?), age 17, born TN. Does have this family in their
database?
Thanks,
Donna

Does anyone have the following family in their database:

1850 census with Ann born about 1800 in TN, William born about 1830 in TN,
Solomon born about 1833 in AL and John born about 1836 in AL.

Melinda CRIDER in Brooke Co. in 1824.
William & Elizabeth Puntney CLAYTON moved west to LaSalle Co., IL in 1832, and

" From these references it appears that John Clayton, the Attorney General,
had at least three sons, John Thomas and Arthur, and in all probability a
son named SAMUEL, for it appears by Slaughter's History of Culpeper County
that Samuel Clayton, of New Kent, is supposed to be a son of John Clayton
the Attorney General of Virginia."
The Samuel that I have picked up as son of Samuel b:1640 was b:1673 and too
young to of been a son of Atty John b:1665. Samuel born 1689 would fit atty
John b:1665.
I have a copy of Hepburn's writings or at least one of them. I have not tried
to prove any of the material in there as it does not seem to apply to my line.
Nor have I tried to prove the Att'y General John Clayton other than to know
that he is different from a John that I might descend from.
"I have picked up for parents of Sarah Davidson: John (one eye) Davidson b:
25 Nov 1744, d: 19 Jul 1775 @ Davidson's fort, Davidson River, NC, Married
to Jane ?. His father was John Davidson b: abt 1707, Ireland died at
Rowan, NC and married to Margaret Morrison of PA."
Note: that Sarah Davidson was born in 1759; and it is unlikely that her father
was born in 1744; also there are a number of John Davidson's in Rowan County
about the same time. Researchers have confused John (one-eye); John (Jacky);
Judge John; all at one time or the other have been claimed as the one who was
killed by the Indians, in 1760, 1775, and 1776. The actual recorded John
Davidson killed by the Indians was in Burke County in 1782, his wife was Nancy
Brevard, daughter of John Brevard, but they were too young to be the parents
of Sarah Davidson Clayton. It is my belief that her father may have been
named John, but he probably was born before 1735; her mother may have been
named Jane, but she was born before 1743. There is also the possiblity that
Sarah Davidson Clayton was the "widow Davidson" when she married Lambert
Clayton, due to her age of 23 at the time she was married. One possibility is
that her maiden name was actually "Scott". This is based on a granddaughter's
statement that she was named for her grandmother, Sarah Scott Davidson
Clayton.
For years I have traced this elusive set of parents and appear to be no closer
to finding them than I was 20 years ago.

John's son, George W., moved to present-day Jackson

Hi James Clayton & Virginia Green,
I've been reading your interesting exchange about Samuel Clayton, b.1640.
I've been chasing this branch of the Claytons too, as you know from our
past communications. Wonder if you, or anyone else on the list has make
any headway on who Samuel's father was. The ship lists from England show
three Clayton males who immigrated to VA alone between 1635 and 1637, two
as servants. But, I've not found a way to connect them with Samuel.

I have not found anything on his parents and I havent picked up the names
of the two servants yet either. Don't know what one could find in England
on them? Probably where one will have to go.
