Claytons originally lived in the Philadelphia, PA area in the 1700s. Though
many migrated west and south, some may have migrated north into NY and
Vermont. Since the pull to the west and south was generally to find
better/cheaper land, the Claytons that moved in other directions may have had
other occupations than farming or arrrived later through New York or Boston.
Just a guess.
------------------------------
Are you sure John Clayton didn't migrate from the Quaker colony in PA -or
from the NJ colony where the "original " landing was made for most of the
Clayton's?
------------------------------
Can anyone help me find the route by which my Clayton ancestors migrated
to Montgomery, Saratoga and Warren Counties, NY?
Apparently "Farmer" Clayton and Mehitable Miller (dau of John) were
raised and married ~1805 in Windham County, VT.
How did the families arrive in Vermont? I believe that "Farmer's"
parents were John and Sarah Watkins Clayton. John reputedly fought at
Bennington (Aug 15,1777) during a 165 day enlistment.
The vast majority of Claytons today appear to live in the south. I have
found no genealogist who is actively persuing the northern branches of
the family.

Hi Fellow Clayton Researchers,
My gg-grandfather, Stephen A. Clayton, was born in 1828 in Georgia. He
was married 3 times, the first time to Emily Elizabeth Shadix (my
gg-grandmother -- and reported to be of Danish descent) in 1847, then to
Elizabeth Cash, and then to Molly Burns. He died some time after 1880.
He was reported to be of Swedish descent and had a brother named Jeff
Clayton. Stephen went to California during the Gold Rush and later sold
his claim.
He and Emily had two children, Tommy Clayton, and my great-grandmother,
Emeline Jane Clayton. She was born August 9, 1848 in Barnesville, Lamar
County, Georgia. She married William Raford Jarrett -- a veteran of the
Civil War -- who was the son of Ralph Raford Jarrett and Sarah "Sallie"
Wright Jarrett. Emeline and William Raford moved to Texas some time
around 1880 and settled in Cass County in far East Texas around the
Cusseta community. Emeline died September 22, 1901, and is buried in the
Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Cass County, Texas. A distant cousin
was told by her grandfather (my great-uncle) that Emeline was a well
educated woman, and could read the Bible in Greek.
Family history has it that Stephen's son, Tommy Clayton, was the mayor of
Barnesville, GA at one time, but I have no idea whether that is true.
She and William Raford Jarrett had 5 children, their first being William
Jefferson Jarrett, my grandfather. He married my grandmother, Nancy
Elmina Wallace in 1893, and they later moved to Kaufman and then to
Denton County, Texas. Their youngest child, Clara Mae Jarrett, is my
mother. She was born May 10, 1915.
Stephen Clayton and his second wife, Elizabeth Cash, had a son and 3
daughters. Cash E. Clayton, was born in April 1875. He married Laura
Tidwell in Henry County, GA on November 17, 1907. She was the daughter
of Henry Tidwell and Sarah "Sallie" Jarrett. He and Laura had 5
children, William Clayton, born May 1909, Robert Clayton, Emmett Clayton,
Thomas Clayton, and Kate Clayton.
The daughters of Stephen Clayton and Elizabeth Cash were Edna; Susie,
born 1876; and Mary, born 1878.
If any of these folks sound familiar, please contact me. We would love
to find any descendants of these folks and we would be happy to exchange
information with anyone.
I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season.

I've got a branch of Claytons that I've never been able to link to
anything in particular. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of information
yet, mainly for lack of research resources. Anyway, what I do have
is now accessible at http://www.math.okstate.edu/~jds/genes/index.html.
Also in there are some Arringtons and Stones.

Just corrected my CLAYTON children link . . . sorry! I am transferring
my web site to Triax from Hevanet and looks like I missed some file
renaming! My apologies if this has caused you to curse me <smile>
If you have a problem, please e-mail me. Also, the web site on Triax is
a duplicate of Hevanet so you can check that site (until I get cut off
at the end of the month) but with "bondk" as the user not "bond" as in
Triax.
Happy Holidays! One of my twin 6 year olds said, "mommy don't worry if
you cannot afford Christmas present, Santa Claus will bring us some!"

I believe it was through his mother's side. Does anyone know more about
this? Where were they living in the 18th century?

At one time, there was a guy doing a one-name CLAYTON study on the aol
genealogy forum. I submitted old John's name, but didn't find any results.
Maybe you could get it from the archive of the names "Ca--Cr" or something?
I just finished inputting my Clayton names to send to the Clayton list.
Can't find a Steed anywhere though.

It has been interesting reading all of your messages. So I guess that I will
add the information on my line.
My great-grandfather, Charles Clayton (1856-1944) came to the United States
about 1869 from England and eventually settled in Kansas City, MO. He was
born in Staleybridge, Cheshire. His mother was Elizabeth Clayton and his
grandparents were James Clayton and Hannah (Hauge?) who were both buried at
Mottram-in-Longdendale. However, I have been unable to get back any further
on this family. There are so many Claytons in Cheshire and I have not been
able to sort them out.

I am seeking information on descendants of Isham H. CLAYTON. He resided in
Barnwell Co. S.C. before 1800 and moved to Lowndes Co. Ga. about 1824.
I have a good bit of info on several CLAYTON families in the Edgefield and
Barnwell Co. S.C. areas I would be happy to share to clarify some of the
following family relationships. I have additional information on the
parents of Susannah Prior-Grubbs and Samuel Jeter and a complete history on
the ancestors of Thomas BROOKE I would love to share with anyone interested
in this family.
Isham H. CLAYTON was the third husband of Susannah Prior-Grubbs. She was
widowed twice. Her first Husband was Samuel JETER who died about 1806. Her
second husband (my line) was Thomas BROOKE who died 1819, Barnwell Dist S.C.
Susannah had three daughters by Samuel Jeter.
1) Levinia Jeter married John T. Clayton in Barnwell Dist. S.C. and they had
one daughter Susannah who married Henry P. CARTER ( relationship between
John T. Clayton and Isham is unknown)
2) Louisa Jeter mentioned in the estate papers of Samuel's father Joseph
Jeter but nothing else is known
3) Eliza Jeter who married John Allen and probably stayed in S.C.
Susannah had three daughters and one son by her second husband Thomas BROOKE
who died about 1819. She and Isham H. Clayton were administrators of his
estate and apparently ran into some financial difficulties related to the
estate and left S.C. to relocate to Lowndes Co. Ga. about 1824
1) Probably eldest Brooke daugher was married before 1824 and may have stayed
in S.C. she is included in Susannah Brooke's house hold 1820 but I have
learned nothing else about her.
2) Elizabeth married a Daniel W. Clayton I would love to learn the
relationship of this Daniel to Isham H. Clayton
3) Sarah Brooke marride Jesse P. Prescott in Lowndes Co. Ga.
4) Son Thomas Tobias BROOKE married first to Mary Deloach probably in S.C.
or Burke Co. GA. Mary Died, possibley in Burke Co. Ga after 1840 census and
Thomas Tobias BROOKE married second to Nancy YERBY in 1844 in Thomas Co. Ga.
Susannah and Isham H. Clayton had three children also,
1) Jackson Clayton
2) Duncan Clayton
3) Forma Clayton who married Ransom Prescott (brother of Jessie Prescott
who married her half sister Sarah Brooke)

I'd like to know about the family of Rachel Mordecai CLAYTON ; she and
husband Nataniel STEED are my sons' 5th great grandparents.
Rachel and Nathaniel were married in 1768; I have not yet begun to research
CLAYTON for myself. I'd like to leave this address list and some other
references for my sons and husband to learn about Rachel and her mother as
there is a tendency to think only in "male progenitor terms".
