Thanks, MJ (what does it stand for?). I'm sending it on to my daughter Linda
who lives in Vermont and does our genealogy research. Will let you know if we
find the missing link. Mary Ella
I don't know if this will be of help to you in your search for Lewis, but the
following are the sources we used to establish our Clayton line. You might
check these out.
Compendium of American Genealogy-First Families of America
Vital Records, Upton, Mass.
Vital Records, Monpelier, Vt.
Grave Stones, Jamaica Vermont Cemetery
Family Records
Childs Gazeteer and Business Dir. of windham Co., Vt. 1724-1884
Town Clerk's records, Jamaica, Vt.
N.E. His. & Gen. Register, Vol 55
Thanks for including me in your emails. I'm still trying to prove the
connection between Moses and Abigail's son Lewis and them. No birth
certificate. No burying place. Nothing to really connect them. Anyone have
any other info? Thanks. Mary Ella (Casey) Whitten
Thanks for the message, I was away and have just now read it. The Vermont
Warnings Out and a couple of others can be obtained from PICTON PRESS IN
ROCKPORT MAINE
The only offenses were that they were not gainfully employed nor did they
have any place to settle down. The books are available through the Picton
Press of Rockport Maine. I believe they have a website, but am away from
home right now and can find it in about a week. If you can wait that long.

I don't know for sure where you can get NH warnings out, but I would ask on
the NH genforum site. People were warned out of towns when it was feared
they would become a town libility. Often their crop or business had been
lost, thereby, placing them in dire straits. Or if the head of household
failed to ask permission from the town council for another person(s) to live
within the home. Often women who were widows without income were warned out
from town to town. It is very sad because many had small children and often
these women were widows of men who died in conflicts for their country. It
was not easy for the widow to gather the proof needed to receive a pension.
I think the poor farms when they were started up at least provided a little
food and shelter but the loss of dignity when forced to reside in such a
place may have been almost as bad as starving. You can read about the plight
of people sent to the poor farm in St. Albans, Vermont online. There was a
distinct lack of charity on the part of many New England families who claimed
to be faithful followers of Christ The Lord. In Vermont people were warned
out of towns even after the law was repealed.
Where can I find warned out of town records for towns in New Hampshire
and Vermont? And can anyone tell me what sort of offenses were committed by
the people warned out of town?

Vermont Warnings Out, Vol. 2: Southern Vermont, by Alden M. Rollins. The

Hi Jane, Still haven't found him! Nice to know you're still trying, anyway.
I'm still looking for the Moses, Lewis connection. It's been so long that I
can't remember which way it goes! Love. Mary Ella
Our family line branches away with Moses' second wife Abagail whose children
were Lewis, Alexander, Ward Philip plus four other children. the only
information I have on your Jonathan is his birth in 1795 and death 21 Sept.
1845 at Windham, VT and his wife Almena Jordan. Most of these sources were
taken from the research of an aged aunt. Our mystery continues to be the
whereabouts of William Clayton the supposed name of Alexander born in Upton,
Mass. in 1757. Somehow he eludes us at every turn. I have researched some
of this at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester. They do have a
Clayton genealogy in their genealogy department. JPNeale
I have found where a person named Phineas Crouch of Brimfield Hampden County,
MA., changed his name to James Munroe Clayton, in 1837. Also, John Crouch of
Brookfield, MA., took the name John Clayton on April 16, 1836. I don't think
this affects my Clayton family line, but it certainly makes for difficulties
for anyone searching this line.
My Clayton line is as follows:
1Alexander-abt 1720
2Jonathan-abt 1743
3Moses-14 April 1769
4Jonathan-1795
5Almon-08 May 1825
6Sarah Elizabeth-06 Jan 1850-m: 04 July 1870, James Brainard Taylor Robbins
7Flora Ella-27 July 1887-m: 27 July 1904, George Washington Place
8Ruth Evelyn-20 Nov 1914-m: 02 Sep 1933, Alfred Bradford Prouty
I would be most interested in the source documents for the sibling(s) of
Jonathan Clayton, born 1795, son of Moses Clayton and Susan Cobleigh.
Thanks, Marlene Prouty-Domstead
