John C. Claypool was born in 1789 in Hampshire County and studied medicine with an Uncle in Indiana. He graduated from the University of Lexington, Kentucky and settled near St. Louis later moving to Belleview, St. Clair County. He was one of the appraisers of the estate of Elizabeth Swaggart, 15 September 1836, the mother of Caty Swaggart Vanorsdal.392 The family left the area in 1836 moving to Ft. Madison, Lee County, Iowa where John C. Claypool helped establish and later became the Warden at the Iowa State Prison. Notice the difference in the birth dates for John. The above article was enclosed in the Biography of his son I believe. If Blondius was born in 1762 and John C. in 1789 she would have been about age 20 at that date. 1800 seems to late as a birth date of John, as Catherine, his sister was probably just married and had her first child in 1802 or so. But the birth of John gives us a starting point in placing the other children.
Blondius, the daughter of Nathaniel Claypool and his wife Sarah, was born in 1762. After the death of her husband she apparently moved in with her son John and traveled to Lee County, Iowa with him. She died there about 1846 and is buried in the Claypoole Family Cemetery, Ft. Madions, Iowa. Her inscription reads: "Blondenah Kuykendall Claypoole, In her 84th year, daughter of Nathaniel, granddaughter of Jacob, sister to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Katherine and Sarah, wife of Jeremiah Claypool married 14 May 1781, Hampshire County, Virginia." George Claypool born 1782 in Hampshire County Virginia, died 16 October, 1866, perhaps her son, is also buried in the Claypoole Family Cemetery and other family members. [Source: find a Grave]
And here is yet another interesting piece of information, this from St. Clair County Circuit Court Case 2679, Peter Kuykendall v. Simon Vanorsdal et al. Capius Debt, 1810, IRAD, "On the back of said writ is the following: to wit." This is an action founded on a note under seal and bail is required signed John Johnson Att for the Plaintiff, and on which said write is the following return, to wit:'Execution on both, but could not commit Simon Vanorsdal to the Jail, he being a Rangerin the United States Service. Jeremiah Claypool running at large for want of a Jail. dated 2 May 1814."

Many thanks to the Reference, Research, & Scholarly Services, UIUC Library for helping me to expand the reference you requested and update the earlier URL. Thank you very much. When I hit the sourced URL you posted, it came up unavailable, can you give it to me as the author and title.
This is very interesting, That trace provided a major highway between those two locations. I really really delighted to have this information. If anyone has complied a family history or list for Jeremiah and Blondius, it apparently has not been posted to Ancestry.
Jeremiah appears in so many records with Simon. But I wondered if there might also be a son Jeremiah.
Here is another record you might find of interest and I am not clear at this time exactly what the debt was all about. St. Clair County Case 2679, Book B 185, C 22.52Peter Kuykendall v. Simon Vanorsdal et al, the al. being Jeremiah Kuykendall. a Capius Debt in 1819. Now both Simon and Jeremiah were involved in the kidnapping of the Kuykendall Slaves beginning in 1802 or so. Supposidly Jeremiah was going to return them to Hampshire County to be sold, but a series of freedom lawsuits by Phyllis and her children, Bob, Kate, Hanah, George, Peggy and Lydia delayed that and it never occurred, must I am sure to the great annoyance of Peter Kuykendall and his siblings, so the debt might be about those cases. The debt was for $433.35 1/2 with damages of #100.00 filed the 27 day of May 1814. A notation at the bottom of the first page reads,"On the Back of which said writ is the following Endorsement, to wit, "this is an action founded on a note under seal and bail is requested, sig!
ned John Johnson Att. for Plaintiff. and on which said writ is the following return, to wit 'Executed on both, but could not commit Simon Vanorsdal to the Jail, he being a Ranger in the United States SErvice. Jeremiah Claypoole running at large for want of a Jail, signed H. J. Mills." They eventually rounded them up and I think Peter was awarded the money.
I appreciate the information which you posted and hopefully, others will be able to add more to this story. Would you please share your first name so I can correctly cite the information you have shared. Do you descend from John?

Good work Judy, including your excellent referencing. It is likely the following refers to Jeremiah and Blondius Claypoole's son John:
'Dr. John Claypole, of Vincennes. where he was born in 1800, was educated in the schools of that city, and was among the early nineteenth century contingents. When a young man he took the trace that lead him to St. Clair County, where he located on the Bluffs near Caseyville, in which village he practiced nearly eight years. After his election as sheriff of St. Clair County, he took up his residence in Belleville. When his tenure of office expired he moved to Fort Madison, Iowa.
After a period of practice there, he assumed the position of warden of the newly erected Iowa State Penitentiary and held it until his death, eight years later. So well known had he become that his funeral was attended by the largest gathering ever congregating upon such an occasion in that city.'

The death of Jeremiah Claypoole was mentioned as "Suggestion of the death of J. Claypool being made to the Court," in the case of Peter Kuykendall v. Jeremiah Claypool and S. [Simon] Vanorsdal, dated Wednesday the 23rd of June 1819. This was taken from St. Clair County Circuit Court Book B:185, located IRAD, c/o Records Management, Morris Library, Mail Code 6808, Southern Illinois University, 1835 University Press drive, Carbondale, Il 62901-6808.
His children may have been Abraham, John, Catherine wife of Simon Vanorsdal, and Angelina or Ann wife of David Coons.
Seeking more information about this family. Jeremiah,Sr. may have been the husband of Blondus Kuykendall, a cousin of Peters, all from Hampshire County, West Virginia, to Knox County, Indiana and then to St. Clair County, Ill. Need to prove relationships.
