Evelyn Claypole Bracken's work has James Claypoole Jr as the patriarch of the Armstrong Co PA Claypooles. However, Charles Willson Peale, a contemporary of J.C. Jr, has him landing in Jamaica "......and there he lived for the remainder of his life." J.C. Jr's painting 'Memorial to E.R.', currently owned by the New Orleans Museum of Art, was painted in Jamaica in 1774. James Claypoole, portrait painter, married Helen(a) Fraser/Frazier/Frasier in 1771 at Kingston, Jamaica and they had 14 children between 1774 & 1796 - only 5 survived to adulthood & one, Thomas, died in 1820 at Kingston, Jamaica age 37. James Claypoole held posts of Coroner & Commissioner of the Supreme Court, Kingston, Jamaica in 1808 and died there in March 1822 - I have a certified copy of his will.

My line came into OH, the Philadelphia branch broke off and some went further into PA, some (Mine) went into DE, VA and then OH. All the CLaypool's from the Phila group go back to the same English line. Let me know the town you live in or area, they may have a good lib that would help. Meanwhile I'll see what I can do to answer some of your questions. Email me at Patch227(a)yahoo.com

I am glad to see this, I have a lot of England info but missed this.
I can't help you on it, but it is possibly found in the records of the Phila. Monthly Meeting books since this looks like it could be an introduction letter. I will check through PA Archive books when I get to my library. The records in England for the Bull and Mouth may have it also.

I have a photocopy of the following text. I carelessly neglected to note the title of the book from which I took it. I know only that it appeared on p. 23. Could you, by chance, help me out and give me the source information?

AN ANCIENT CERTIFICATE
Contributed by Mrs. James Fisher, Reedsville, Va.
in:?????????????????????p. 23
To Friends and Brethren in Pennsylvania, in America:
Dear and well beloved brethren and sisters in the holy union of Divine love: We dearly salute you all--earnestly desiring that grace, mercy, and peace, true love, and patience from God, our heavenly Father, and Jesus Christ, the true Light, may be daily added to, and increased among you all, Amen. These may acquaint you that our dear and ancient Friends, James Claypole and Helena, his wife, have laid before us their intentions of transporting themselves with several of the children, viz. Mary, Helena, Priscilla, James, Nathaniel, George and Joseph into Pennsylvania, in America, and desired from us a certificate according to the good order used amongst us insuch cases.
These are, therefore, to certify concerning the said James Claypole and Helena his wife, that they have walked with us in the love and fellowship of the gospel for many years past, and have approved themselves in diligence and failfulness in their testimony to the Truth in and through the sufferings and trials that have come upon us, and attend us at this day. And all other services of truth that that they have freely given up themselves according to the gift of God and ability given them, and have constantly frequented our six weeks' meetings, men's and women's meetings, and any other services that Truth hath filled them unto--as many of you can testify on their behalf. So we hope and desire you will receive them in the same love and tenderness in which they parted from us; that the blessings of God Almighty may rest upon you and them, and we may have true unity and fellowship in God's Holy Spirit with you, though absent in body.
And whereas, their three daughters, above named, are grown and growing up, to women's estate, and if it should please God that they should alter their conditions and marry in your country, to prevent further trouble of sending here for certificates, we have enquired and examined them severally, and do find that they are clear from all engagements unto person, or persons here, and thier conversation, innocent, so far as we know. So, desiring that the Lord may preserve them in unity with Himself and His faithful people, that His blessings and sweet presence may attend them and theirs forever. We rest, dear Friends and brethren, in the love and fellowship of the gospel of peace.
From our monthly meeting at the "Bull and Mouth" in the city of London, the 11th of the second month, 1683.
