Hi tc
As I've free admitted in other threads here, I'm anything but an expert on my line (which also descends through Jesse via Jonathon and Hannah Doane).
What I am finding though is that there seems to be when/where and even "if" questions about the identity of James of Hardy County's wife. There are also questions about how many wives James may have had, and if more than one, was "Jane Byrd" a married or natal name of the lady who is declared to be his wife via her tombstone?
And, there are those who question whether or not Jane's name was ever Byrd, citing the "confusion" of the earlier Claypoole/Byrd marriage much earlier in England.
In short, I don't know the answer to your question, but like you, I have a similar quandry in establishing who the mother of our Jesse Claypoole was.
Here's hoping that we establish this via document before long!
Joe

Yes indeed, I do have questions, but probably the same ones I've seen asked in many other places by people who started on this long before I did.
My primary question is one that may have an easy answer, but if so, I've not yet found it: "What evidence is there that James of Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia) connects back to either James of New Castle, Delaware?"
>From tombstone readings in Hardy County, it's not hard to realize that his birth was about 1701, and that he died in Hardy County in 1789. And, as tchoupt has already mentioned in a post earlier in this discusion, James of Hardy County mentions his son Jesse via his will.
As you've already mentioned, it's not hard to find gedcom "information" linking Elizabeth Pawling with James Claypoole, Jr (son of James Sr. who was the personal friend of William Penn). Those same gedcoms often link James of Hardy County with Elizabeth Pawling. Like you, I'm fairly certain that rendition is not accurate, but in neither those scenarios, or others correctly linking James of Hardy to Mary Cann as his mother, have I yet established a documented connection between James of Hardy to New Castle, Delaware.
My guess is that I simply haven't been at this long enough to work through the haze, so any help here would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Joe

Hi Barbara,
That it "drives so many people nuts" is evidenced early in the hunt by the work compiled for Edward Fay Claypool, one edition of the work declaring that James of Lost River was of Norton's descent, and not of James Jr.
This has been a major hurdle for those not willing to accept that Jesse's grandfather was indeed James Jr., son of James and Helena Mercer. It's also a matter which does raise the question of why the genealogists commissioned by E.F. Claypool apparently misinterpreted the data from Delaware.
E. F. Claypool's work blurringly, seemingly/possibly does tie James III to Norton's line via Elizabeth Pawling, but apparently does NOT make the same mistake as you are attempting to rectify by including Elizabeth as a wife of James Jr.
I do appreciate your clarification that both James Claypooles died in close date proximity, and that records for both are found in New Castle. That will save me some steps as I work on following my own descent from Jesse back into history.
Thanks!
Joe
