The line from Philip to son John moved across the county line into Licking Co. I
come from John's daughter to his first wife, Eliz was born in 1844 and married
Absolam Hayman in Muskingham then moved bringing her father with them into Licking
Co. They became scattered.

Barbara,
I really appreciate all the above information. Thank you ever so
much. Did your line of Claypools remain in Muskingham Co., OH?
My Claypool line stopped with Priscilla, but her descendants in my
line were in Rockingham Co for a brief time, them located in
Allegany Co., MD, to Fayette Co., PA and finally Allegheny Co.,
PA. Thanks again.

A source has done some research for me and has found that Evelyn Bracken has
my James Blaine listed as James Botsford born 8 March, 1876 however my James
Blaine was born (according to his tombstone in Forrest Cemetery, Gadsden,
Etowah County, Ala.) on 8 March 1875 and died 2 Dec. 1943.
His father is listed as John Claypool who was born in Ohio m Eliza Coons
Blaine born in Ky.
James Blaine was born in WV.
James (Blaine) Botsford is listed as having Married first Belle Montgomery in
1895 and had James Blaine in 1902.
Then m 2nd Anzoletta Saunders 10 Oct 1908.
She had 6 children, four of whom were living. Wallace M, Harry, and Percy
McCreery.
They lived in Birmingham, Jefferson Cty, Al in 1910 and had an additional
child James B who was 3 months old.
In 1920 James apparently widowed by childbirth had 4 children living with him
in Birmingham, John (9), Harriet (8) JB Jr (4) and Anzoletta (Zonie).
Does this connect with anyone or does John Claypool m Eliza Coons Blaine
connect to annoys line and if so what are the ancestors, locations, dates?
Thanks for plowing thru this and any answers.

With Vanessa's permission I am forwarding her answer to me
regarding the explanation of the term "quartering of arms". As I
had not encountered this term before, I thought there might be
others in the same boat. It appears that she also sent a cc to the
list, but I didn't receive the list posting. I appologise if this is a
second posting.
>Vanessa,
>Thank you so much for sharing your information and for clearing up the
>confusion on Anne Sansum. I do have another question. Could you explain
>what the term "to quarter their arms" means?
The arms I referred to in 1784 came from THE HISTORY OF LAMBETH BY ALLEN
On Stockwell Park House carved in Stone is a shield with the following
arms:
1.Angell Or, 3 Fusils in Fess Azure, over all a Bendlet Gules.
2.Povey Sable, a Bend engrailed between 6 Cinque Foils Or.
3.Edolphe Ermine in a bend sable, 3 Cinque Foils Argent.
4.Scaldwell Azure a Cross Pattee Fitchy between 8 estoiles in Orle Or;
impailing Gresham, Argent a Chevron Ermine between Mullets pierced Sable.
Over the iron gates in front of the forecourt is the Crest of Angell, out
of a Ducal Coronet Or a Demi Pegasus Volent Argent adorned with Gold.
Quartering was where a wife's arms were quartered (the shield was divided
into quarters) with those of the family she married into. This quartering
did not take place during the life of the the wife only after her death and
normally indicated that she was an heiress and had inherited the right to
the arms. The arms above refer to a couple of extra Angell marriages later
than the one with Joan Povey. Edolphe refers to Elizabeth the wife of John
the son of William Angell and Joan Povey, Scaldwell to Elizabeth Scaldwell
the wife of Justinian Angell William Angell's grandson, and Gresham to Mary
Gresham the wife of William's great-great grandson who died in 1784.
Hope this answers your question

Hi Barbara,
Could you please post what you have on Philip? Philip is the
brother of Priscilla Claypool who married Eber Chilcott; Eber is the
brother of Elizabeth Chilcott who was married to Philip. I descend
from Eber and Priscilla. The only information I have on Philip and
Elizabeth is:
Elizabeth b. 27 Sept. 1791, d. 1847
and a list of eight children as follows:
John, James, George, William, Rachel, Catherine, Rebecca and
Elizabeth.
Anything you can add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just joined the group and come from Philip and John and James, etc. I
can fill in any blanks on Philip's family that might be needed. I don't
want to send any repeats, let me know. I'll enter my full line in a few
days. I have been researching the family for a good many years and have
amassed lots of notes and info sent to me by others. I have some British
info sent also. I have been trying hard to find any info on Fort Mathias
where William was killed, and have never found anyone in Hardy Co that
has ever heard of it.

I am not the best person to ask about Mary Angell's descendants - I do have
some bits on John, a picture of Betty Cromwell, even a snippet on John's
later affair with his laundress. I can let you have details and a picture
of the house William Angell bought in 1614 at Crowhurst, his grandfather's
will, his will and various bits (including the family arms).
I am descended from Mary's eldest brother and whilst I have details on all
her brothers and sisters I have not really followed them up.

Vanessa,
I have all the same information as you on Norton Claypool.
However, on the parents of Mary Angell, I have William Angell and
Ann Samson. My source for this is another Claypool researcher.
As you are in England and closer to the original sources, I have to
wonder if my information is in error. Could William Angell have
been married twice? Could you share your source?
Thanks in advance,

With regards to Anne Sansum - she is mentioned in Herald's Visitations -
BUT - married to William's brother Thomas and may well be the Anne buried at
Peakirk in 1598. None of William's children mention a wife called Anne
(they all claim descent from Joan Povey) and William's eldest son John's (my
ancestor) descendants continued to quarter their arms with those of the
Poveys as late as 1784 when the direct male line died out.
Anne Sansum, meanwhile, was the mother to another William Angell who was a
member of the Merchant Tailors Company and married Elizabeth Holland the
daughter of the classical scholar Dr Philoman Holland (I believe another of
his offspring was an early settler in the North American Colonies).
William Angell, Mary's father, was involved in business ventures with
Justinian Povey (Joan's brother) and Justinian's sons were influential with
the new colonies across the Atlantic. One son was a key player in the
Government and a close friend of Samuel Pepys another was missioner general
of provisions to Jamaica, and another Provost Marshal for Barbados. I
believe one of the Claypole boys ended up in Barbados, could the family
connection have been the attraction?
For further proof - try checking out the Herald's Visitations for Surrey and
London. Perhaps an easier source in the US is a genealogy published by a
descendant of Thomas Angell (one of the founders of Rhode Island in the
1630s) I think she was called Eliza Angell or Elsie (I've not seen it being
a Brit) but in the various attempts to disprove Thomas Angell's descent from
William Angell (the Fishmonger) she included loads of our family's wills and
details of their relationships.
Please let me know if I can furnish you with further detail

Sherranlynn
I have about ten Mary Claypool's in my file, but none are married to
a Osborn or Bardigum. There are several that I don't have a
spouse for:
~Mary b. 26 Dec 1650
~Mary b. 12 Jan 1803
~Mary (Polly) b. about 1760-1770
~Mary Elizabeth b. 1832
Or any of these may have married more than once:
~Mary b. 1660, m. Francis Cook
~Mary b. 1742, m. William Smith
~Mary b. 1766, m. James Metcalf
~Mary Ann b. unk, m. W. R. Foster
~Mary Jane b. abt 1867, m. unk Caldwell
Can anyone jump in and answer Sherranlynn's question?
