CLAYBURN FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH
Let me just outline my CLAYBURN research for you. As you may know, I am
a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies and have been researching my
own name, CLAYBURN, plus my mothers maiden name, CLASPER, for some time.
I have made a start by extracting all the CLAYBURN references from
worldwide genealogical directories to people interested in the name,
then writing to them. This completed, the next stage was to extract all
the IGI references, this has been done on computer files taken straight
from
the IGI CD ROM.
The next stages are, first, collect all the English birth, marriage and
death records for CLAYBURN from the General Record Office in London,
this is now complete up to 1985. Secondly, extract all CLAYBURN's from
telephone directories in the UK and English speaking countries, then
write to them.
This study is financially supported by myself and revolves around
collecting and collating anything and everything about the CLAYBURN
name, plus keeping a list of the names of everyone who is interested in
the CLAYBURN Family History. The long term aim being to publish, in some
format as yet to be decided, a history of the CLAYBURN name and roots
together with CLAYBURN family groupings.
In order to keep the study within reasonable bounds, we do not follow up
the female side of the CLAYBURN families other than to note the name of
the person to whom the ladies became married.
We are also constrained somewhat by legislation that prevents us holding
too many details on living persons. So, unless approval is given, I am
unable to pass information about living persons on to a third party.
This does not prevent anyone from providing me the names, birth date,
marriage date on any living CLAYBURN's and their subsequent death
details along with a biography. These can be held on my central register
for cross reference purposes.
This collection of information depends on all people who can assist,
providing me with their family trees, names, ages, dates etc. Plus, what
stories they inherited have relating to their CLAYBURN family. Such as
where the family came from and when, also any good tales from the past,
etc. Now is the time to talk to the older members of your CLAYBURN
family, extracting the history before it becomes too late, as I well
know.
Should you require a copy of your CLAYBURN family tree forwarding, as
best as I know it, then you must provide me with the basics. Names,
dates and places of your siblings, parents, grandparents etc.
Please assist in keeping this study moving forward.
Sincerely
Rod Clayburn.

Dear Listers,
I have just received a request from the Claiborne Society in the USA,
suggesting that I take part in their Y-DNA Study in order to follow up
any relationship between the different spellings of the Clayburn and
variant names Claiborne - Cliborn - Clibborn - Cleburne lines that the
Claiborne Society has started.
http://www.claiborneclan.org/
The Cliborne Society has voted to fund eight donors to start a database
for comparison of these four lines and for others to check against. So
far six donors have been tested - two Cliborns, two Claibornes, one
Clibborn and one [?] who paid for his own test and now knows how to
clean up the documentation on his ancestors. This week we have
identified a Cleburne donor, a direct line back to
Cliburn, Westmoreland and hopefully will have his results back by the
end of March.
The research tests are being undertaken by the Family Tree DNA company
in Houston, Texas.
http://www.familytreedna.com/
This is a reputable company who are undertaking research into many
family names, if you look at Chris Pomery's site at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics1a.html
Chris lists all those family groups known to be undertaking this DNA
research.
Alan Savin has studied this research, his book explores the potential
use of DNA for family history research, details are shown at:
http://www.savin.org/dna/dna-book.html
Alan advises me that he knows the company and its CEO, Bennett Greenspan
very well. Alan has no hesitation in confirming that they are a top
class company, with excellent customer service.
