Thanks for the response. I would agree that something is mixed
up. Most of my information came from the papers of a cousin (and his
mother) who researched the family in the 1940s/1950s. My cousin was
a 3-great grandson of Henry & Rachel (Povall) Clay. I have been
trying to verify his data. In any case, I now have:
1. Henry1 Clay was born on 3 Sep 1711 at Henrico County,
Virginia. He was born on 3 Oct 1711 at Southam Parish, Virginia. He
married Lucy Green, daughter of Thomas Greene II and Elizabeth
Marston, in Mar 1732. He died before 22 Aug 1764 at "The Raells",
Cumberland County, Virginia.
Children of Henry1 Clay and Lucy Green were as follows:
2 i. Rebecca2 Clay.
3 ii. Charles Clay.
4 iii. Thomas Clay.
5 iv. Lieut. Abia Clay.
6 v. Marston Clay, m. Elizabeth Williams.
7 vi. Lucy Clay.
8 vii. Capt. John Clay.
9 viii. Elijah Clay.
+ 10 ix. Samuel Clay, m. Mary (--?--); d.
before Jun 1810.
+ 11 x. Dr. Henry Clay, b. 19 Sep 1736 at
Cumberland County, Virginia; m. Rachal Povall; d. 17 Jan 1820 at
Bourbon County, Kentucky; bur. after 17 Jan 1820 at Clay Cemetery,
Bourbon County, Kentucky.
10. Samuel2 Clay (Henry1) married Mary (--?--). He died
before Jun 1810.
Children of Samuel2 Clay and Mary (--?--) were as follows:
12 i. Henry3 Clay.
13 ii. Lititia Clay.
14 iii. Samuel Clay.
15 iv. George Clay.
16 v. Littleberry Clay.
17 vi. John Clay.
18 vii. Richard Clay.
19 viii. Rachel Clay.
20 ix. Thomas Clay.
21 x. William Green Clay, b. 1809 at
Bourbon County, Kentucky; m. Patsy Povall Bedford; d. 17 Apr 1855 at
Bourbon County, Kentucky.
11. Dr. Henry2 Clay (Henry1) was born on 19 Sep 1736 at
Cumberland County, Virginia. He married Rachal Povall, daughter of
Richard Povall, on 9 Apr 1754 at Cumberland County, Virginia,
1753. He died on 17 Jan 1820 at Bourbon County, Kentucky, at age
83. He was buried after 17 Jan 1820 at Clay Cemetery, Bourbon
County, Kentucky.
Children of Dr. Henry2 Clay and Rachal Povall were as follows:
22 i. Elizabeth3 Clay, b. 13 Jan 1755;
m. John Bruce.
23 ii. John Clay, b. Feb 1757; m. Patsy Ingram.
24 iii. Rebakah Clay, b. 17 Mar 1759; m.
William Finch.
25 iv. Samuel Clay, b. 10 May 1761 at
Cumberland County, Virginia; m. Ann Nancy Winn; d. circa 1810 at
Bourbon County, Kentucky.
26 v. Rachel Clay, b. 19 Jun 1763; m.
Barkley Martin.
27 vi. Sally Clay, b. 16 Nov 1765; m.
Matthew Martin.
28 vii. Tabitha Clay, b. 15 Nov 1767; m.
Benjamin Francis Bedford; d. 1864.
29 viii. Mary Ann Clay, b. 10 Mar 1770 at
Cumberland County, Virginia; m. Thomas Dawson; d. between 4 Aug 1845
and 13 Oct 1845 at Roaring Springs, Kentucky.
30 ix. Henrietta Clay, b. 2 Feb 1771; m.
George M. Bedinger.
31 x. Martha Clay, b. 8 Sep 1772; m.
Littleberry Bedford; d. 2 Mar 1864 at Bourbon County, Kentucky.
32 xi. Henry Clay, b. 14 Sep 1779; m.
Margaret Helm; d. 1863.
33 xii. Lettie Clay, b. 5 Oct 1782; m.
Archibald Bedford.
Note that Samuel (#10 above, s/o Henry &Lucy) has no birth date, but
has a death date of 1810 which is the date given in many sources for
Samuel (#25 above, s/o Henry & Rachel). Many sources base the death
date for both Samuel's on the Bourbon Co., KY will for Samuel which
mention his wife but not by name. Thus I question whether the what
I have is actually for the persons assigned to the right family.

Hi Pat:
For clarification purposes for other researchers who read this, you wrote:
" Dr. Henry was the son of Henry and Lucy (Green) Clay. He had a brother,
Samuel Green Clay, who married Martha [Patsy] Wall. He was born in Goochland
County, Virginia and died Aug 1809 in Granville Co., NC." Your last
sentence "He was born in Goochland County, Virginia and died Aug 1809 in
Granville Co., NC." refers to Samuel Green Clay as Dr. Henry Clay died in
Bourbon County, KY on 17 January 1820.
Anyone from the line of Dr. Henry Clay, we are researching this line as it
descends from Dr. Henry Clay's daughter, Lettie Clay, who married Archibald
Bedford, Bourbon County, KY 31 January 1796. Would love to share research.

The name Samuel, as with John and Henry, was a very popular name in this
family <G>. There are 13 in the Clay Family Society database from the 18 and
19th centuries. And, I'm sure we don't have them all!
Samuel, son of Dr Henry and Rachel, was born 10 May 1761 in Cumberland Co.,
Virginia, d 1810 in Bourbon County, KY. He is listed as marrying Ann Nancy
Winn (no source), with children:
Henry, b c 1791 m Mary Grimes
*George, b c 1791 m Almira Bainbridge
Letitia, b c 1793 m Edward B Moran
Samuel, b c 1795, no further information
*Littleberry Bedford, b 1799, d 1879, m Arabella McCoun
Richard P, b c 1802, m Olivia Parsons
*John, b c 1804, m Eliza Ward
Thomas, b 1806, d 1831, in Milledgeville, Georgia
Rachel, b c 1808 m Robert McCoun
William Green, b 1810, m Patsy Bedford
The names with asterisks are those for whom we have children.
Samuel came with his family to Bourbon County from Charlotte County,
Virginia c 1790.
Except for Thomas, these folks all lived in Bourbon/Fayette counties.
Here's a little excerpt that Connie Collins wrote on this Samuel and his
brother John:

So, I suspect that one of your Samuels got mixed up with another one
somewhere along the line. If you can share the remainder of the information
you have on the "Samuel son of Henry and Lucy" maybe we can figure out who
this is.

| Research on Samuel Clay reveals that there are two men who appear to

| Both men have different sets of parents. One is the son of Dr. Henry

| Sources that I find show both men as having a will dated 7 Apr 1810 in
