Don't know why you sent this to the Clay list, but perhaps either Sterling
or Sallie (Carr) Mayes comes from a Clay family.
I did quickly find Sterling Mayes in Clayborne County beginning in 1840,
with one fwp-m under 5, one fwp-m 20-29, and one fwp-f 15-19.
That gives you an age range for Sterling, who would be born bet 1810 and
1820, and (presumably) Sally bet 1825 and 1830.
We have Sterling, 31, and Sarah, 31 (hmmm) and a bunch of kids in 1850:
James, 10, John, 6, Houston, 9, Nancy A, 5 and Richard, C, 1.
In 1860, the children were Wm, 20, John M, 17, Nancy, 15, Richard, 11, plus,
Elizabeth, 8, Louis, 6, and Thomas, 3. Next door is James D, 22, and wife
Sarah, 22, and next door to them is (brother?) Johnson and family. Where did
William come from. He is not on the 1850. Perhaps a cousin?
By 1870, we have Sterling, Sarah, son Lewis J, Thomas J, as well as John
Mayes Cheatham, 2, Mary Yoakam, 20, and Douglass Yoakum, 1. On this census,
they are close to two Carr families, James, 69, and John H, 40. I suspect we
would find these in the neighborhood earlier as well.
In 1880, Sarah has become Sallie C. (before this she was consistently
Sarah). John Cheatem is identified as adopted son.
Now, then, we haven't seen Nancy since 1860, so where did she go?
The 1850 and 1860 censuses list her birthplace as Tennessee. So the question
I would have, is why do you list her birthplace as Ray County, Missouri? The
1850 has John, 6, b Missouri, but all the others b Tenn.
There is another oddity with this census. Generally children are listed in
order of birth, unless there are two families represented. These go 10, 6,
9, 5, and 1. That would imply (but not prove) that Houstin, Nancy, and
Richard are not full siblings (or may be unrelated) to James and John.
Because the census does not give relationships, it is hard to say.
I do note a "findagrave" entry for Sterling that indicates two spouses - but
doesn't have any sources for the information, and appears to mix up Sarah
and Sallie.
This same site has Nancy Ann married to John "Jack" Moore, b in Texas, three
children, Jeff, James Houston, and Will. She m J W Bolin in 1882, buried
w/Bolin name.
There is a listing in the 1870 census for Jefferson County with John, 50, b
TN, Sarah, 25, b TN, James N, 6, Jefferson M C, 3, and Ida U T J, 7/12, all
b TN.
The 1880 has a Houston Moore, ae 17, living with the Sterling Goin family in
Dist 12, Claiborne County, TN. There are no Moores in Claiborne County
whose fathers were born in Texas. There are only six in the whole state
(mostly Hardeman County).
Now, I understand the vagaries of the census enumerators, but I would wonder
if somehow some information was mis-applied as to either John/Jack Moore's
birthplace, and/or Nancy's.
I am no expert in the Tennessee Clay families, but I don't find any of them
in Claiborne County, but there were a few in Grainger and Rutherford early.
Perhaps there is a suggestion that one of the Carrs or Mayes were connected
with some Clays in Virginia?
There is a marriage record for J W Bowlin to Nancy Mayes (not Moore) dated
13 July 1882 in Claiborne, but nothing for Nancy and John/Jack Moore. The
records (found at Ancestry.com) go back at least to 1847, so it looks like
the burning of the courthouse didn't affect all the records, anyway.
Between 1838 and 1870, there are over 6000 records.
Generally, when I have a problem like this (i.e., someone gives me a
pre-made family genealogy), I find it easier to start with the "known"
(i.e., you, or your parents) and work backwards, using the census, marriage
records, death records, wills, etc., until I get to wherever it takes me.
And, most of the time, I've found that it didn't take me where the
"pre-made" genealogy said it would.
Hope this helps you, and I hope that someone else has some more information.
