As you probably know, the 1881 census has Joseph, 4, living with Joseph, 54,
(his grandfather) a "general labourer", Sarah, 54, their children, Ellen,
12, and Thomas, (unmarried) 22, a gardener.
Joseph (the elder) was born in Tilston, Sarah in Farndon, Ellen in Rowley
Hill Farndon, Thomas and Joseph Jr, in Farndon.
However, in 1881, there is also, in Eccleston:
Charles Clay, 25, married, general labourer, b Farndon
Sarah A, wife, 21, b Kelsaw
Thomas, 21, boarder, Gerdener, domestic, b Rowly Hill. He is single.
It looks like Thomas got enumerated twice.
In 1861, they are in Stretton, Kings Marsh, and the family consists of:
Joseph Clay, 38, born Stretton, Cheshire, Smith?
Sarah Clay, 34, wife, b Farndon
Elizath Clay, 8, dau, b Farndon
Charles Clay, 6, son, b King's Marsh
Thomas Clay, 1, son, b King's Marsh
Daniel Ince, 2, lodger, nurse child, b Farndon
In the 1871, I found Charles Clay, 15, as "Assistant Game Keeper", born
Farndon, in the Brailsford household, in Chester Castle, Eaton. Brailsford
is the Game Keeper.
I don't find Elizath -- she may be married by then.
In Barton, Cheshire, I finally found Joseph and Sarah (thanks to Daniel
Ince, as they were indexed incorrectly):
Joseph, 46, Smith, b Stretton
Sarah, 45, b Farndon
Thomas, 10, b Kings Marsh
Alfred, 9, b Kings Marsh
Sarah Ann, 6, b Kings Marsh
Ellen, 3, b Kings March
Daniel Ince, 12, boarder, b Farndon
So, in 1877, when Joseph was born, (appears in the FreeBMD third quarter,
1877, Joseph Clay, Chester, vol 8a. 379), Charles was 21, Thomas was 16,
Alfred was 15, Sarah Ann was 12, Ellen was 9.
It is unlikely, but possible that Joseph was the son of Sarah Ann, but
unlikely. Likewise, Alfred.
So, probably Charles (was he previously married, before his marriage to
Sarah Ann?), or Thomas -- who is consistently listed as single -- and an
unknown woman.
However, we forget Elizath -- and sure enough, we find a Christening in
Farndon, Cheshire, England, 3 Jul 1877 (which matches the BMD record) and
the mother is listed as Elizabeth Clay. No father listed.
Hope this helps!
Pat

DON'T FORGET THE 2012 CLAY FAMILY SOCIETY GATHERING, INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI,
JUNE 21-24, 2012.
Just for kicks, checked out "born in Stretton" -- and found one William Clay
on the 1871 census, still there. William is 58, wife Mary, 58. She was born
in Malpas.
