Hi Pat. This question didn't come from me (it was sent to the Henrico
Rootsweb list and I forwarded it to the Clay Rootsweb list). I don't know who
made the inquiry therefore as it originally came to the gateway list and
wasn't signed. As far as I know there is no documentation proving a wife for
William Mitchell CLAY (and Bob Clay believed that too).
Best regards, Tim

You are certainly correct about this "issue." Perhaps it would be a good
subject to bring up for the 2014 Clay Family Society Gathering (near
Williamsburg, and also, therefore, near Richmond).
We seem to go round and round about this, and it would be good to "get it
on record" one way or the other. Even if the answer is "heck, we don't
know!" <G>

There are many trees on ancestry that have William Mitchell Clay's 1st
wife
as Martha Runyon in 1729 and his 2nd wife as Martha Ann Lewis in 1732.
Can anyone please confirm that with a marriage document? Also, everyone
seems to think Martha Ann Lewis is the daughter of Colonel John Lewis and
Elizabeth Warner of Warner Hall (related to President George Washington).
I
cannot find anything that confirms this as true. Any help is appreciated
and
if it is incorrect, then there are a lot of misinformed people out there.
John Lewis and Elizabeth Warner did have a daughter named Ann Lewis but I
have yet to find any documents that show she is the one that married a
Clay. Thanks to anyone that can help.

Tim -
Thanks for forwarding the information about the Clay family from Surry County, Virginia to the Clay list. I was hoping to see something new in it, but did not see much. I am familier with Warren Forsythe and his Rootsweb work. I am currently living in Minnesota since moving here in 2011, but while living in North Carolina, I joined another genealogy group member to make a presentation on the Virginia tidewater counties of Surry and Isle of Wight. I think that was in 2007. For that presentation, I did research on the CLAY line while studying the history of Surry County at the Raleigh state library, and learned much about the Clay family from Surry Co. I have collected a file of data and started building a timeline of the John Clay family of Lawnes Creek. Warren is correct in saying "no confirmed connection" to the famous VA Clay family . . . I do think one day we may find a connection. I realize there is an ongoing look for family DNA from that line. I regret not makin!
g a short trip to Surry Co VA to gather further data while living in the Southeast.

P.S. I see that in previous communications and web-postings, I had omitted
the remarriage of the widow/executrix Mary (who became Mrs. John Clay
ca.1636 recorded in Surry Co VA)--
to Roger Archer by 31 May 1678 in a Surry Co. VA record (on back of March
1661 deed), but the married couple evidently lived in Isle of Wight Co. VA
(the county line was close by). Roger Archer is last mentioned by the above
article on 4 Nov 1679 when Mary and Roger Archer acknowledged the above
deed transfer, again in Surry Co VA records.
