[CLAY] Levi Clay Family, Adair, Iowa
by Dr. Barbara Inman Beall
Levi Clay (1843-1917) was my great-grandfather on my paternal grandmother's
line. Her name was Adelia Viola Clay Inman (1869-1951). The Clays were the
second family in Adair, Iowa and the first to build a permanent home there. Levi
Clay worked for the railroad and was there July 21, 1873 when the Jesse James
Gang robbed the train just outside of Adair. After twenty or more years of
research, I finally wrote a book about the incident. I also incorporated a great
deal of Clay (Klee) and Stillians genealogy in the book. You can read about the
book at my new website: http://www.historical-footprints-2010.com
There are several sections on the Historical Footprints site. I have a photo
section that includes actual pictures of the Adair Clay family. I even have a
section of Jesse James pictures there.
Levi Clay was born in Summit County, Ohio, the youngest son of John Clay and
Mary Barbara Hoy. This Clay family descends from Johann Nicholas Klee of Bern
Co., Pennsylvania, who arrived in the 1730s from Germany.
