Thanks Robin and Shirley
Should have looked up the pension myself -- I just ran across his name while
researching someone else and got my curiosity up.

Subject: Re: [CLAY] Elijah Clay
The Elijah Clay who went to Edgar Co., IL was a son of Henry Clay and
Lucy Green. He received a pension in which it states he was born 27 Aug.
1759. This agrees with the birth date found in a Bible that that lists
all of Henry's children. Elijah's pension shows he was from Cumberland
(later Powhatan) Co., VA and mentions two children - Catherine (1835
res. Montgomery Co., VA) and Charles.
Elijah married Martha McNeal, 20 Apr. 1780, Powhatan Co., VA. The fourth
edition of the /Adventurers of Purse & Person/ gives additional
children: Henry Tatom Clay, Elizabeth Mastin Clay, & Polly Mitchell Clay.

I have two Elijah Clays that may be possibilities. Both these were found
in my data base, I may have others in my book.
1. Elijah Clay, s/o Henry Clay and Lucy Green. Henry was born 1711 and died
1764
Notes: His will was signed in Cumberland Co., Virginia on March 8, 1764.
The will was probated October 22, 1764. Will Book 1; In the will he mentions,
wife Lucy, sons Henry, Charles, Samuel, Abia, Marston, John and Elijah;
daughers Rebecca and Lucy. Abia, Marston, John and Elijah are all under age.
Executors: John Maury and sons Henry and Samuel Clay.
June 28, 1750, Thomas Green, of Amelia, deeds to Henry Clay, of Cumberland,
two hundred acres of said Green's Patent of February 10, 1748.
On November 4, 1760 Henry Clay, Sr. and Lucy, his wife, deed to Henry Clay,
junior, two hundred acres on the north side of the Appomattox, granted on
July 19, 1724 "to my father, Henry Clay, now dec'd, whereon my son Henry now
lives".
Henry and Lucy's children were born from 1736 to 1756
ELIJAH: He is mentioned in deeds dated July 13, 1783 and August 2, 1792,
when he sells land in Cumberland Co., Virginia. I have no other information
on him.
2. Elijah Clay s/o Thomas Clay and Ann Powell.
ELIJAH: Born c 1751, not further info on him. Ann and Thomas's children
were born from 1742 to 1756
Thomas and Ann: He was deeded land in 1752 in Amelia County, Virginia by
his father Charles Clay.

Hello Robin,
One of my cousins found in Amelia Co VA Order Book 19, Pg 341, mention of
Thomas Clay Will of 27 Oct 1791. I didn't think he had a will since I didn't
find it listed in Virginia Wills and Adminstrations 1632-1800 by Torrence,
but my cousins said its possible it didn't get listed there and still be a
will at the courthouse. Do you know
anyone that lives close to that area that could check this out? It sure
would be great if there was one where he named all his kids.
Thanks

Hi Robin. It is recorded in Order Book 19:341 It says Will of Thomas Clay
dec'd presented. 27 Oct 1791. This date indicates when it was heard in the
courts and ordered recorded. Exact day of death is not recorded. Nor do I find
an actual will for him. Interesting enough though I find an entry in the
book of Unrecorded Deeds and other documents of Amelia Co. Virginia 1750-1902
an entry in which Frances Clay gives a deed of gift to her son Thomas Clay
of Amelia co. dated May 24, 1811 for consideration of natural love and
affection 110 acres of land in Amelia co. adj. lines of George Kidd, Daniel Allen
Sr, Polly Coleman and Rebecca Adams. Probated June 27, 1811 and ordered
recorded.
This would indicate that there was more than one Thomas Clay.
Another entry I find is more than likely the first Thomas Clay in which he
is recorded in the Ministers in Amelia Co. Records 1777-1781. "Sept 25, 1777
Thomas Clay produced to the Court a writing purporting an ordination of him
to be pastor of the Baptist Church in Dinwiddie Co. signed by Samuel Harris
and James Walker, elders of the Baptist Society, said to be issued by him
at the instance of the said Church of Dinwiddie, and moved that he might be
permitted to take the oath prescribed by law, and that his said license or
ordination should be admitted to record, but the court not being satisfied as
to the legality thereof, refused to permit the said Thomas Clay to take the
said oath to admit the said license. (OB 13. page 41)
Then in OB 13, p. 44, Oct 23, 1777 Thomas Clay, a minister in the Baptist
Church appeared in court and took the Oath of Fidelity to the state.
so it would seem that this Thomas also spent time in Dinwiddie Co. prior to
1777. According to the deed books it sounds like he was back and forth. On
April 23 of 1783 he is recorded as selling land in Amelia Co. and he is
listed as living in Amelia co. at that time. Then on Oct of that same year he is
listed as living in Dinwiddie Co. as he sold other land in Amelia Co. In
Deed book 2, Thomas is listed as living in Hanover Co. in 1747 as his land is
mentioned in another deed transaction.
In Deed book 3 Thomas Clay is mentioned in a deed of Gift from his Father
Charles Clay dated may 5, 1752 in which Charles Clay deeds 150 acres of land
on the L/S of Deep Creek, adj. lines of Major Peter Jones and Maj. Richards
with all houses, etc. Wit. by a William Clay, John Powell, and Robert
Powell. Charles Clay also deeded land to another son Charles Clay Jr. on May 6,
1752 also on the L/S of Deep Creek adj. the lines of John Clay, Thomas Clay. A
William Clay also witnessed this transaction. Charles Clay is listed as
living in Chesterfield Co. Virginia.
If you like I can go through all of the deed books and give you the
information exactly as it is written. It seems though that Thomas was the son of
Charles Clay with brothers of John, William, Charles, and possibly other
siblings. Let me know if you would like me to look further into it.
