I am helping a friend do research on his family. I would like to post the oldest proven ancestor I have for him and see if anyone on the list can help me find information on previous generations.
The oldest proven ancestor on my tree is John CLAY, born in Arkansas, married to Caldonia Vines, b. 1875 in Texas, d. 1913 probably Oklahoma. They had three children that I have been able to find, Bessie Delina Clay, b.1897 in Texas, d. 1971 probably Oklahoma maybe Arkansas, married Marion Edward McCabe from Arkansas. They are both buried at Blackburn Chapel Cemetery, Shawnee, Pottawatomine County, Oklahoma. I know Marion died in Perry County, Arkansas, they moved to Shawnee in 1922 but Marion left and went back to Arkansas when Bessie died in 1971. They also had a daughter named Viola, I don't have any information on her. They had a son named William Temple, b. in Oklahoma in 1905, d. 1986 in Oklahoma. William married Nona Agatha Harris, it appears they lived in Oklahoma their whole married life.
I would be happy to exchange any information I have if you can help me with this family.
Thanks,
Shirley Anderson

I haven't posted to the list in some time as I have been working on other
lines. I descend from Henry CLAY who married Honor HARPER or BURNSIDE. The
extended families are found in the 1860 and 1870 census on Bolt's fork in Boyd
Co KY. I have found many cousins who descend from this line, but my Direct
line, Henry H CLAY Who marries Mary Jane CHAFFIN is largely blank. They are
found in the 1880 Census for Carter Co as follows:
1880 US Census KY Carter Co KY
Henry CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Self Gender: Male
Birth: <1844> KY
Mary Jane CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Wife Gender: Female
Birth: <1846> KY
Dennis F. CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Son Gender: Male
Birth: <1867> KY
Amanda M. CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Daug Gender: Female
Birth: <1869> KY
Honor E. CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Daug Gender: Female
Birth: <1871> KY
Wm. Henry CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Son Gender: Male
Birth: <1873> KY
Jerome F. CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Son Gender: Male
Birth: <1877> KY
John D. CLAY - 1880 United States Census / Kentucky Son Gender: Male
Birth: <1879> KY
I descend from Amanda, known as Mandy who marries John BROWN, son of Samuel
Harrison BROWN and Phoebe ROE. They are found in the 1910 census in Greenup
Co KY, Maj Dist 3, Kentucky Furnace with their five children at the time and
two of Mandy's brothers, John 21 and Isaac 19. Family history is that Henry
and Mary Jane went to WV, but I can't find them there in the census. Mostly
I am interested in descendants from Mandy's siblings. So far I have found
none.

I haven't done much on my Clay line for some time and was browsing some old notes when I came across a copy of a Rootsweb archive posting. (February 1999) This researcher declared that Phoebe Belcher was the daughter of Francis Belcher and Phoebe Cabaniss. Everything I have found states that Phoebe Belcher is the daughter of Richard Belcher and Mary Obedience Clay. Now I'm really confused. Does anyone have proof one way or the other? I don't want to perpetrate incorrect information. Thanks, Diane Bingham

Gloria: I don't have any information about Clay Indian descendants but there
is a fictional book called Free in Chains by Mary Kegley that is based on an
actual court case involving Indian slaves owned by Henry Clay and later
Mitchell and William Clay. The court case was discussed in the 2004 Clay
Family Gathering in Beckley WVa. The Kegley book is fairly recent probably
published in 2003 or 2004. Also go to John Pritchett's site on The Clay
Family www.virginians.com/topics/1848.htm and search for Free in Chains.
There is also some discussion on the Clay Genforum-search for Indian Trader.

Hi, Jaquelin:
I am not an active researcher of the Clay's but am fairly familiar with the Clay line you are talking about. I am a direct descendant of Wiliam Mitchell through Mitchell, William, John Mitchell, William Henry, James William and Ralph. Your information did surprise me. I did not know that Wiliam Mitchell had a son named Obediah. In going back through the Clay Digest Archives I found a couple of references with a list of William Mitchell's kids. Can I assume that this is fairly well documented? I also show a Obediah as son of William Clay (1718- ?) who was the son of Charles Clay of Chesterfiekl (1675-1764) who was a brother of Henry of Henrico (1672-1760). Is this information on this Obediah correct?
Mitchell, son of William Mitchell, married Phoebe Belcher and moved to West Virginia near what is now Bluefields. Three of their children (a girl and two boys) were killed by Indians in 1783.
Some of the early digest archives do reference Henry Clay the Indian trader. There are even a couple of references to possible Indian tie-ins.
I do not plan to research the Clay's as I am actively researching one of my nother's ancestors. It is interesting that it is also rumored that one of my ancestors on this side may have married an Indian woman. There is no proof either way. Another interesting coincidence is that the Landreth's and some of Clay's (Mitchell, Ezekiel and David)served in the same Montgomery County Virginia militia.
Anyway, thanks for providing me with some very interesting and eye-opening information.
Lawrence Clay
Gloria,
Obediah was a son of William Mitchell Clay and the
grandson of Henry Clay (1672-1760) of Henrico Co, Va.
Obediah had three surviving sons (Levi, Olive &
Thomas) and one daughter (Polly). Obediah's wife was
Mary Chappell. The Chappells were I think a fairly
well known early settler family of Virginia.
I never heard Henry called an Indian trader, although
he may have done some trading of some sort. Mostly
they were farmers, of tobacco and other crops.
I am descended from Levi, but I know of no American
indian ancestry.
Hope this helps,
Jaquelin Clay Fisher
