Hello,
My g-g-g-g-grandparents were William CLAY, born 1748, and Margaret BAKER, born 1749. They were married in Bratton Clovelly, Devon on April 30,1777. They moved to another small village in Devon, Petrockstowe, and lived many years at Hall Farm.
There were seven CLAY children born in Petrockstowe, including my g-g-g-grandmother, Alice (christened November 27, 1780) , and her brother Zachariah (chr. 1778). His son John sailed to Australia with his wife Agnes MOASE and their eight children, and arrived in Adelaide on July 16, 1851.
Alice married James BASTARD in Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon on July 11, 1805. Their first child, Elizabeth, was christened in Petrockstowe on July 10, 1808. Elizabeth married Thomas GUNN, and some of her descendants left for Utah, and became Mormons, while others remained in North Devon, mainly Great Torrington.
My g-g-grandfather William was christened in Great Torrington, Devon on April 23, 1820. He left for Canada, and was married to Anne GLEESON in London, Middlesex County, Ontario on February 5, 1850. Their daughter Elizabeth, my g-grandmother, was born November 15, 1850 in London. Her second marriage was to Thomas Wellington STANFIELD in London on December 23, 1874. My grandfather, Ernest Nelson, was born in Fort Erie, Ontario on December 3, 1882.
I would love to hear from anyone who is descended from this CLAY family, or has any knowledge of them.
David in Pennsylvania

Hi Guys and Gals,
Here's something I would like to share with all of you. In the preface of my greatgrandfather Brummett's Funeral Book is something that struck me as to what we are about. It goes like this...
If life is sacred it should not be allowed to perish. True, the body will return to the dust from whence it came but the rememberance of the life should continue. Someone has said "We are not dead until we are forgotten."
As a last tribute to our Loved One(s) we have compiled the following data in the hope that their precious life shall ever live in the minds of the oncoming generations of our family.
I have no idea who wrote this passage as no author is listed. I feel that it should be a preamble for all of us who are searching for our roots. I ask all of you "Is that not what we are all about?"
Below the passage is the following...
"Far off thou art, but ever nigh.
I have thee still and I rejoice."
Tennyson
Have a nice summer!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Jeannie C. Watts, author of "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay" returned my check and apologized for the delay in answering my e-mails. She said that it was due to personal family reasons that she was unable to keep up with her business. I accept her apology and thank her for sending me some Clay information for my inconvenience.

This message originally appeared on the list back in April. I decided to
order the book. That was in the middle of April. As of yet, I've not
received my copy, but they didn't have any trouble charging my Visa card
with a $22.00 charge. Has anyone else ordered this book? If so, did you
receive your copy? I have sent them 3 messages, but I haven't received an
answer. Thanks, Diane Bingham

Looking for info on Charles L. Clay and wife Mary ??. According to census
info, he was born in Kentucky abt. 1803.
Found in Monroe County, Missouri in 1850 census with wife Mary, children
George W., Margaret, Charles, Ann E., Elizabeth, Louisa, Henry, and John.
His son George W. Clay, b. 17 May 1831 in Missouri (married Mary Jane

1860 and 1870 census had children Oscar Tatum, Nora McDonal, Davidella, Anna
B., Josephine, George W., Travis S., and Henry Clay.
Family later found in Randolph County, Missouri.
Hoping someone can help with more info on these folks. Thanks for any help.

I was researching another family, and I ran across many CLAYS in Stark Co.
Ohio in the 1830 and 1840 census. Don't know who they belong to, but I
figured someone might be hunting them.

I love to learn about all Clays, their personalities, their families, who
they are, what they did (or do) past or present and meet Clay Cuzns from all
walks of life. This is after all the Clay List. I certainly delete a lot of
messages that I see on this list but I not very many as I like to read about
all members of our families. :>) Nancy

OMG I think I just figured this one out for myself. Joseph 1646 [Mary
Epps] and
Sarah Jane were bother and sister. So that would make their children
cousins. Can this be right?
*******************************************
I have this for Joseph, Katherine is my 10th great grand mother, does anyone
have dates or other info? can you send a chart like this?
Who is Elizabeth Kennon? What are the sources other than WFT?
I had two Sarah Royals in my file so merged them, and oh dear, i am my own
cousin again...

Maybe I'll catch up with my mail when I retire, in 2010!
PLEASE DO NOT SEND VIRUS WARNINGS, JOKES, CHAIN LETTERS, ATTACHMENTS, ETC.
Thanks
I will gladly exchange genealogy information if you will kindly do the same.

I agree. Answering a lot of email all in one fell swoop, we can all get
careless with the forward and send now buttons.
works for me!

sounds reasonable. By the way, I like the banter, as long as it doesn't go
on too long, which I haven't seen on this list. I'm here to learn about the
*whole* Clay line, not just the dead ones ... and, hey, guess who the Clay
line is? Ned
Greg and Nancy--Why don't you people write to each other on your own e-mail
address? I don't think personal messages are appropriate for this site. We
all get too many messages as it is. And of course we have to open it
thinking we will learn something about our ancestors.
Shirley.
Greg, I also love to look at antique cars. Has he been to the Crawford Auto Museum here in Cleveland. It is amazing!!!
Looking forward to seeing you again. Everyone that would like a registration packet for the Clay Family Gathering please contact us and we will see that you get one. We have met our quota so there is still time to register.
Clay Cuzn,
Nancy
Nancy:
My dad's something else to be sure...and an expert of Model T Fords I might
add. Don't get him going on antique cars! I think he's looking at all the
golf courses in Lexington, but I'll drag him to White Hall for sure.
