A few new items about this Clay family:
At least two cemetery books and one published book about German immigrants to NC show a listing at Daniels Lutheran Church in Lincoln County,NC with a stone for Nicholas Clay and a date of 1769 and a list of ten descendants. Today I visited the cemetery: There is a memorial stone for Nicholas Clay which states: In Honor of Nicholas Clay , one among the first settlers that settled in this community. 1769.
The stone next to Clay's is one for Adolph Reep, Sr. Pioneer killed by Tories 1784. Children: Adam and Michael in Rev. War. Adolph, Peter, Henry, Frederick, Jonas, Mary Barbara, Magdalene and Elizabeth.
Placed by Descendants 1977
These are the names which had been attributed to Nicholas Clay in printed documents! The stones are both granite and of the same size and look to be of the same age. The Reep family is tied to the Clay family by at least two marriages so it may be that the Reep family placed the Clay stone as well.
A book entitled" The Michaels Family of Burke County, North Carolina", by Elizabeth Henderson Michaels and printed in 1996 has a section on George Pinkney Clay, Jr. He was in possession of an old powder horn which he said was made by his great-grandfather, Issac Clay and Issac's brother Abraham. The horn carred the inscription, " I. Clay was born August 11, 1750. I. Clay 1781 and A. Clay 1781.
This is the first time I have seen any proof that Issac and Abraham were brothers. Issac was the executor of his father's will which has been lost. However, a deed from the early 1800's states that land which Issac is selling was willed to him by his father, Nicholas Clay.
Two early land transactions of Nicholas Clay (1769) state that he is of Cumberland in the province of Pennsylvania.
At present I can only be confident of four children who belong to Nicholas : Abraham, Issac, Susannah and Martha.
Issac and his wife Barbara Seagle (daughter of Johannes Segal and Margaret Reep) probably had 11 or more children. At this time I can make a reasonable guess at 8.

More later as I compile my notes.

Once again I am on the trail of this Nicholas Clay who came to North Carolina from Cumberland County, PA. I am trying to verify that my Clay line comes from this German line. Has anyone out there had luck with research on this family. I spent a few hours in the Lincolnton library today and plan to do more tomorrow and will let everyone know what I find. The Nicholas Clay family lived on land in the area of Lincoln County known as the Daniels community. It lies in the area where Pott Creek intersects with the South Fork of the Catawba River. Nicholas bought property from John and Mary Potts for whom I assume the creek is named .. The family attended Daniels Lutheran Church and today I located some entries of confirmation and attendance in the early 1800's. I am particularly interested in learning more about Jacob Clay who married Sally Bangle in 1822. In 1823 Jacob purchased land on Indian Creek which is a short distance from the Daniels community. I can not find any!
info on Jacob or his family after this date.
Hope to hear from others researching this family.

I sincerely apologize but my computer was infected with a virus and may have sent it to you via an e-mail attachment. Please do not open any attachments that appear to be from me. I'm very sorry...I opened an attachment from what I thought was a safe source. I guess there are no safe sources unless it's verified.

Nancy, I am cleaning up e-mail messages and came across where I had saved
this. I stem from Johann Nicholas--
John Clay-- Christian clay- I have run into at least in your christian
branch a Kay McKenzie in Canada and Dr. Barbara
Bell in Colo. Have you been in touch with them. I tried hard to join your
group with my Christian but just couldn't
get a fit. Off the top of my head I don't think either of them are from
Mathias. Have you gone through the old
Clay-roots messages? D
