Still seeking clues to the identity and family relationships (if any!) among
Percible Clay (first name spelled very creatively) who appears in NC deed
records from the 1750s, last in Duplin/Sampson Counties, NC in 1780s. Goes
to GA in 1790s, in Washington County area; also owned property in Warren
Co., GA by 1803.
It was in Duplin Co., NC, in 1783 that Sarah Clay married Henry Holland and
they moved to GA. Later, Percible Clay supported Henry Holland's application
for a Rev. War Pension. Was Sarah Clay related to Percible Clay? Thanks for
any guidance.

I am searching for the Clay ancestors of Ethel Clay who married Mark
Sweadner. The only information I have on Ethel is that her full name is
Ethel Anna Clay, and her DOB is 12/17/00 I am assuming that the 00 means
1900 because she married Mark Sweadner whose dob is 1899. Ethel's parents
are Ella Louise Rhinehart and Harry Lee Clay. Ethel's place of birth is Near
Hemetown, Montgomery Maryland. I don't have any other information on her.
Does anyone know this line of Clay's? Your help is much appreciated.
Thank You,

Going to Colorado for my birthday!
Hi - I have an Isham Belcher married to Elizabeth Clay. Isham Belcher was
the brother of Phoebe Belcher who married Mitchell Clay. There is a family
connection here. Also, I show her born about 1734 and dying about 1791 in
Wyeth Co. He then married Winifred Royall on 03 Jan 1791 in Cumberland
Parish, Lunenburg, Virginia. This information on Isham Belcher came from
the Belcher Research Web site. The URL is
http://www.geocities.com/gbgwbel/belchersmain.html
There is so much confusion in this family over which child belongs to which
parents, that I have not listed any parents for Elizabeth Clay, nor Mary
Obedience Clay. I would appreciate hearing any good documentatation on
these families. Thanks, Diane Bingham

Bob Page et al:
I find a William Clay listed in Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck's book entitled
"Virginia's Colonial Soldiers" that I believe is our William Mitchell Clay.
On page 343 in a chapter dealing with court martial records, & more
specifically those attending such hearings, he is listed as a member of Capt.
Tatum's Company. There are two facts that I believe point to the conclusion
that this is our man.
First, let me offer into evidence that Capt. Tatum's group hailed from
Chesterfield County, as did William Mitchell Clay. Second, another member of
Capt. Tatum's group was Isham Belcher. Isham, according to my notes, was born
in 1732 In Chesterfield County, VA & died 1798 in Wythe County, VA. He
married Elizabeth Clay on 2 July 1759 in Chesterfield County, VA. Elizabeth
Clay was born about 1724 in Chesterfield County, VA. She was the d/o Henry
Clay & Mary Mitchell & therefore the sister to our William Mitchell Clay.
Isham Belcher was the brother-in-law of William Mitchell Clay.
The date of the above record is 1759-1760, some 15 years prior to the 1774
Battle of Point Pleasant. So, while it doesn't place our William Mitchell
Clay in military service on 10 September 1774, it does tell us that he was a
soldier in Colonial America.
Sincerely,
Mike Peters

do you have any proof of this, I had the two boys with Mary also, and do you

Your lineage is correct to a point.
John Clay and William Mitchell Clay were brothers. However, John Clay m. (1) Sarah Watkins and had sons John and Edward. He m. (2) Mary Bass and had a daughter Fanny. Mary entered the marriage with a son, Jerimiah who sometimes went by the name of Clay. John, son of John and Sarah, was the father of Henry Clay 'the Statesman'. Henry m. Lucretia Hart. So, it should be:
1. Henry and Mary
2. John and Sarah; John and Mary
3. John and Elizabeth
4. Henry and Lucretia
Elizabeth (Hudson) Clay m. Capt. Watkins after her husband John died. He was the brother of her sister's husband. That's my final answer!

Mike since you are not able to come to the Clay Family Gathering this time

so we can talk about it on Saturday evening at the informal get together the
committee is hosting for the attendees. Thanks,

Henry Clay he has researched him for about 15 + years. So, yes there has
been work done on Henry.
Nancy
Bob Page & Clay list members:
A couple of weeks back, as is my custom on Memorial Day, I compiled a list of
family veterans who have served in wars ranging from the French & Indian to
Viet Nam. Among the veterans, I mentioned the following:
* William Mitchell Clay, my ggggggg grandfather, who was the first casualty
of the Revolutionary War."
I posted to a couple of lists. I then received a reply from a researcher who
said she had been told that a Samuel Crowley/Croley, from one of her
husband's lines, was the first to die in the Colonies' quest for independence.
So, I did a little research & found that Samuel Crowley/Croley was listed as
a participant in the Battle of Point Pleasant -- the first Battle of our
American Revolution. He is listed in "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers," by Lloyd
Dewitt Bockstruck, as being a member of Capt. John Lewis' Company in
September of 1774.
From the same reference book I also found the following:
"Petition of Elizabeth Croley whose husband Samuel Croley enlisted as a
soldier under Colonel Lewis and was killed on 10 October 1774 in the
engagement with the Indians. She is left with several small children. 10 June
1775."
I also did some searching in the "Crowley" and "Croley" areas of the GenForum
website. There are many queries & responses there that deal with Samuel
Crowley/Croley. In each of those his death is also listed as 10 October 1774
-- the day of the battle.
I quickly informed the lady that William Mitchell Clay died on 10 September
1774, a month earlier & that there was a movement underway to erect a
monument honoring William Mitchell Clay as the first casualty of our American
Revolution. The monument, according to my information, is to be in Mercer
County, WV on the site of the former homestead of his son Mitchell Clay.
The lady said that she would forward the information to other researchers of
the Crowley/Croley surname. I told her that we, as descendants of William
Mitchell Clay, would welcome a friendly debate. As of now, I have not heard
from anyone else in the Samuel Croley/Crowley faction. Should I hear from
anyone who doubts that William Mitchell Clay was the first to die in the
Revolutionary War, I will make the list privy to such information.
Let the games begin!
Sincerely,
Mike Peters

Absolutely not. The Hon. Henry Clay is a descendant of John Clay, the
BROTHER of William Mitchell Clay. Their parents were Henry Clay and Mary
Mitchell of Henrico/Chesterfield Co., Va. The line goes Henry Clay/Mary
Mitchell -> John Clay/Mary ___ -> John Clay/Elizabeth Hudson -> Hon. Henry
Clay.
By the way, Dr. Lindsay Apple will be presenting "In the Shadow of a Mighty
Oak: Living in the Lineage of Henry Clay" at the upcoming Clay Family
Gathering. I'm sure that he has a great deal of information on the
descendants of the Honorable Henry.

I've put this up before but some of you didn't see it. The name 'Henry'
was very popular in the Clay family. You could very well be descended
from Henry Clay but not the statesman. There were several Henrys per
generation.
Henry Clay, the statesman was descended from a brother of William
Mitchell Clay.
1. Charles Clay (1645 Charles City Co., VA - 1686 Henrico Co., VA)
m. Hannah Wilson
2. Henry Clay (1672 Henrico Co., VA - 1762 Henrico Co., VA)
m. Mary Mitchell (parents of William Mitchell Clay)
3. John Clay (1721 Henrico Co. VA - 1762 Chesterfield Co., VA)
m. Sarah Watkins
4. John Clay (ca 1742 Henrico Co., VA - 1781 Hanover Co. VA)
m. Elizabeth Hudson
5. Henry Clay, the statesman
