On the information in the L W Rigsby's book you need to take it with grain of
salt. He has no documentation in his book but it can be very helpful to lead
you to infomation. My husband's great grandfather was Nicholas Harden Clay
and it helped to lead me to information but some of his information is
heresay and we of the Clay's family need to document the information. LHG

Mason formed Jan 3, 1804 from Kanawha. Kanawha in 1788 from parts of
Greenbrier and Montgomery.
Greenbrier in 1778 from parts of Botetourt and Montgomery. Botetourt in 1769
from Augusta. Montgomery in 1776 from Fincastle! Fincastle [extinct] was
formed in 1772 from Botetourt, in 1776 it split to form Washington,
Montgomery and Kentucky which became the state.
Thanks for writing.

Thanks for the correction on which county contained Point Pleasant in 1774. I
got my info from WVGenWeb's home page. It says that Mason was formed in 1804
from Kanawha County. I guess I didn't trace it back far enough. Thanks again.

Hello all,
According to a map I just picked up at the courthouse in Pt. Pleasant, in 1774, Mason County was Fincastle, formed in 1772. It was Greenbrier in 1777, and Kanawha in 1788.

Sandy, et al:
I also have Pt. Pleasant, located in present day Mason County, WV, as the
place of death for William Mitchell Clay. I have his date of death as 10
September 1774. I believe that in 1774 Point Pleasant was part of Kanawha
County.
Sincerely,
Mike Peters

the problem is what county existed at the time, I make it a point to put the
proper name of the county at the time the event occurred, I have Henrico for
his birth in 1710, Chesterfield was formed in 1749. As for death of William
Mitchell Clay I have Point Pleasant.
Bedford 1753, Cumberland 1749.

Looked up a little info. The Chapter reference comes fom
a WFT CD that lists notes referring to a book called
The Georgia Branch of The Virginia Clays and thier
Celebrated Cousins with Harden and Jones Genealogies and

Some of my Clay and Mitchell information came from the
FTM site of Eric Workman and
LDS ancestral File AFN:2VJT-75
and some LDS Pedigree Resource Files.
None of this is my information and that is why I posted
on the list, to see if anyone could further document or
discredit the information.

Gregg, [This is in answer to a private e-mail from Gregg Clemmer.
Thought there might be those on the List who would be interested.]
I don't have the complete Will but the fact that abstracts have been
published leads me to believe that the Will is available in Granville
Co.
"Abstracts of The Wills and Estate Records of Granville County North
Carolina 1808-1833, Vol. II" by Zae Hargett Gwynn. Published by Joseph
W. Watson, 406 Piedmont Ave., Rocy Mount, N. C., 1976.
'52, 53- Oct. 7 1796- proved Aug. court 1809- SAMUEL CLAY, Sr. wills to
wife for lifetime all that came by her from her father's estate, also a
slave and his wife, a bed and furniture, horse, saddle, bridle, cattle,
and 1/3rd of land I now live on. My land sold for benefit of my family
and to all children as they come of age or marry, all my estate divided
among them and they educated. If my wife marry, no one of my children
are to live with her and negroes hired out for their support. Exrs:

'208, 209, 210- Nov. court 1818- JAMES CLAY petitions that wishes of

THOMAS COOKE and SAMUEL M. CLAY; at Feb. court 1816, THOMAS B.
LITTLEJOHN was appointd guardian to the minor children, namely DOCTOR

divided. JAMES CLAY has reached the age of 21 years and asks his share
of estate and negroes given him, Jan. 1819.' (pp. 106 and 107)
'352 thru 355- Nov. court 1819- A petition on will of SAMUEL CLAY,
deceased, who willed that his lands were to be sold as soon as all got
together by executors and divided to all my children and also negroes to

THOMAS COOKE and SAMUEL M. CLAY admstrs. The land has been sold for
$5500.00 and negroes hired out. SAMUEL CLAY left the following named
children: SOPHIA, wife of SAMUEL M. CLAY; ELIZABETH, wife of WILLIAM

CLAY; the last minors and represented by their guardians, THOMAS B.
LITTLEJOHN and LEWIS and HENRY M. CLAY, who was also guardian to your
petitioner prior to her marriage with ZACHARIAH SAMUEL. Ask division of
negroes.' (p. 124) [There are errors: Sophia married Henry not Samuel
M. Clay; should be Samuel not Lemuel]
I didn't write down the soure on these dates:
Sophia Clay m. Henry Moore Clay on 1 Jan 1803
Sarah G. Clay m. Thomas Cook on 15 Dec 1807
Doctor Clay m. Betsy Hill on 10 Nov 1807 [may be a different Doctor
Clay]
John M. Clay m. Elizabeth F. Henning on 8 Sep 1812 [not sure this is
John Clay son of Samuel and Patty Clay]

Maybe I'll catch up with my mail when I retire, in 2010!
First of all, the only proven lineage starts with John Clay the
immigrant who married (1) Ann and (2) Elizabeth. Their (John and
Elizabeth) son Charles and his wife Mary Mitchell are the ancestors of
most of the Clays in the US.
The line from Samuel Clay aka Samuel Green Clay, son of Henry and Lucy
Green is one that is little known. Most interest seems to center on his
older brother William Mitchell Clay.
Samuel Green Clay married Martha 'Patty' Wall, daughter of David and
Martha (Scoggin) Wall. S. G. Clay was born 16 May 1743 Goochland Co.,
VA which became Cumberland Co. in 1748. He died 23 Jun 1809 in
Granville Co., NC (Will dated 7 Oct 1796; proved "August Court", 1809).
Samuel and Patty were married 29 Jul 1782 Halifax Co., VA. Patty
married (2) 10 Apr 1810 Granville Co., NC to Capt. Jacob Faulkner.
1. William Henry Clay (ca 1783 Halifax Co., VA - after 1826 Greene Co.,
GA) m. 27 Dec 1814 Franklin Co., NC to Mourning Gay. Their only child
was a daughter named Martha Adline (note spelling of Adline which is
taken from family bible). Adline was born ca 1816 in GA; married 5 Oct
1835 in Limestone Co., AL to Thomas Redus. In 1850, Mourning (Gay) Clay
was 54 years old and living in the household of Thomas and Adline in
Limestone Co. AL. This is my line and I never heard Martha Adline
called anything but Adline by the family.
2. Sophia Clay (ca 1785 Halifax Co., VA - Lumpkin Co., GA) m (1 Jan
1803 Granville Co., NC) Henry Moore Clay, son of Marston/Maston Clay.
3. Samuel Mitchell Clay (10 Oct 1787 Granville Co., NC - 25 Aug 1844
Limestone Co., AL) m (1) ca 1813 probably Granville Co., NC to unknown.
Sam is shown on census in Limestone Co. with 4 children - no one seems
to know if they were his or what their names were. Sam m. (2) 19 Jul
1842 Limestone Co., AL to Eliza Henderson. There were two sons from
this marriage: Henry (1843) and Samuel (1844 - born after his father's
death). There are publications which state that Samuel Mitchell Clay
was the father of Martha Adline Clay. He wasn't...this is just poor
research that keeps getting repeated and has sent many of us on a wild
goose chase!
4. Elizabeth 'Betsey' Clay (1788 Granville Co., NC - probably Benton
Co., AL) m. 10 Aug 1805 Granville Co., NC to William McGehee.
5. Sarah 'Sally' G. Clay (ca 1789 Granville Co., NC -) m. 15 Dec 1807
Granville to Thomas Cook
6. John Martin Clay (1791 Granville Co., NC - before 1850 Smith Co.,
TX) m. (1) 8 Sep 1812 Granville to Elizabth Henning (2) 26 May 1818
Madison Co., AL to Lucinda Chewning
7. Robert Wall Clay (ca 1793 Granville Co., NC - 1820 Granville Co.,
NC) evidently never married as his siblings were his heirs.
8. James Clay (ca 1795 Granville -)
9. Doctor Green Clay (Doctor was his first name, not a title) (ca 1797
Granville - probably Granville Co., NC)
10. Lewis Clay (ca 1799 Granville - probably Limestone Co., AL) was with
Samuel Mitchell Clay in Limestone Co. in 1844; nothing more is known.
11. Mary Clay (ca 1801 Granville -) m. 24 Mar 1819 Granville to
Zachariah Samuel. They moved to Lumpkin Co., GA ca 1835.
This is not my work. Was given to me by very generous, highly respected
Clay researchers.

I am desperately seeking information on Benjamin Franklin Clay. He was born
September 1846, place unknown to parents unknown. He married Laura
Clemontine Cofer (1860-1921), on 24 November 1877 in Bartow County, Georgia.
Does anyone recognize my Benjamin Franklin Clay? Any information would be
helpful. Thanks in advance for any information.
