Joel,
Limerick, PA is definitely close to Pottstown. Do you suppose that your
Joshua's father had moved further west to Perry Co.? or that my James just
couldn't cut it in the west and slowly moved back east?
I think maybe I should check the 1850 Perry County Census and see how many
CLAYs were there. That might give me an idea on a brother for James. Of
course that still brings everything to a screeching halt, since I couldn't
determine families from the 1840 Census. Have you checked 1850 Census data?
Thanks for the information.

died 5/9/1927 in Pottstown, PA. I am hoping to get to the NARA in the next
few days, to looke at Alban's pension record.
According to the index to Union Soldiers, Rolanders CLAY was in Co A, 53rd
Infantry, but I haven't been able to find any pension data, and I haven't
been able to find the index to get the military records. I'll ask some
questions when I go in next and see what is happening.
I'm also leaning toward the idea that Kate DAWSON was a CLAY prior to her
marriage, and that the Amelia with her is her daughter. I am going to do
some checking and see if I can find a DAWSON who was killed during the Civil
War.
If anyone has any information or ideas about any of this group of people, I
would love to hear about it. Thanks!

With some trepidation, I will row in on the current back and forth re John
Claye, etc. It seems almost nothing is known about the original immigrant,
I thnk particularly his origin.
I am particularly skeptical about the "Wales" bit - Clay is not a Welsh
name, and I strongly suspect that comes from a mis-reading of the American
Clay family origins in the old country.
I am in the process of making contact with genealogists in Norfolk, the
County with the greatest concentration of the name Clay, to see if I can
unearth anything. This will not happen overnight. I am also meeting a
rather highfalutin English Clay next week (a barrister) and if I get a
chance, I will ask him if he has any knowledge of Clay name origins.
On my cousin-hood query, I would appreciate any knoweldgeable replies on
cousin relationships.
Many thanks,
Jackie

Without using charts, you can figure it out as follows.
Levi Clay was a second cousin of Henry Clay.
Children of Levi Clay (including your g grandparent) were second cousins
once removed of Henry Clay.
Grandchildren of Levi Clay (including your grandparent) were/are second
cousins twice removed of Henry Clay.
G grandchildren of Levi Clay (including your parent) were/are second cousins
thrice removed of Henry Clay.
GG grandchildren of Levi Clay (including you) are second cousins four times
removed of Henry Clay.
GGG grandchildren of Levi Clay (including your children, if any) are second
cousins five times removed of Henry Clay.
GGGG grandchildren of Levi Clay (including your granchildren, if any) are
second cousins six times removed of Henry Clay.
