It's right up there on the state line with VA. The land was worn out in
only one or two generations because of the cotton and tobacco crops.
Also they had large families and when the land was divided between the
children there wasn't enought to support a family. They moved on to the
next area that was available. If you follow the settlement of VA, it
goes from the coast gradually inland until the people were in what is
now the next state.
My Clay's lived in Granville Co., NC - Samuel Green Clay and his wife
Martha Wall. Their son Samuel M. Clay moved on to GA and then settled
in AL.

From the Will of William Clay made in 1810 and probated 5 Oct 1812 in Franklin Co., Va his children were Patsy Woodall, Betty Dodges, Hannah Tyree, Judah Clay, Milly Cowden, William Clay, John Clay, Meredith Clay deceased, Ezekiel Clay and his wife was Milly Clay. The data that I got from "The Tyree Tree" by Dorothy Chambers Watt but have not proven is William clay was the son of Charles Clay and his wife Sarah ? William was first married to Ann Old 10 May 1756. Ann was the daughter of John Old. 2nd William married Milly Tucker. This may be true as his Will states that his wife was Milly. In a copy of "Twelve Generations of Farleys" Judith Clay was said to be the daughter of Charles Clay and his wife Sarah. Is there any proof of this? Dolly Cobb
I have been following the recent email on John Clay and his ancestry. I
thought that I might gain some insight on John Clay's ancestry by checking
out the boat that John was suppose to have landed in Jamestown in February
1613.
The following came from: The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography.
Samuel Argall in September of 1612 returned to Jamestown after a quick
passage of 51 days and in the following December set out on his first voyage
up the Potomac to procure corn from the Indians. It was while on this trip
that Samuel devised and carried out the plan of abducting Pocahontas. She had
been placed in care of another chief but was surrendered for the bribe of a
copper kettle and taking the hostage, Samuel returned to Jamestown.
In July of 1613 Samuel was sent in a well armed English man of war and
reduced the newly established French settlements of Mount Desert, off the
coast of Maine, St. Croix, on an island of the same name and Port Royal, Nova
Scotia, all of which was were regarded by the Virginia authorities as an
infringement of their character. While on this trip Argall was said to have
visited the Dutch settlement on the Hudson and to have compelled it to submit
to the crown of Great Britain. He was variously employed in Virginia from
December 1613 to June 18, 1614 when he sailed to England.
At no time does in this article does it say that Samuel Argall sailed to
England in 1613 and if this accounting of his voyage is correct John Clay
could not have arrived on his ship in December of 1613. This makes me wonder
if John Clay was in the Dutch settlement in New York and returned with Samuel
Argall to Virginia. I would be interested in hearing some other thoughts on
this.

Hi Nancy,
Many thanks for the offer. Royal CLAY (abt.1806-1880) is found in the1850
Itawamba County, Miss. census. On the Ga. GenWeb,, there are 24 CLAYS listed
as head of households in the 1840 census. One of which is ROYAL listed under
Paulding County. Unfortunately, they don't give any other info. I would
like to match up the ages of the family with the ones in the 1850 Itawamba
census. Do you have any access to the 1840? In the 1830 Ga. census, there
are 21 heads of family listed, with one listed as RYAL Jr. in De Kalb County.
This could be him as I have him marrying in abt. 1827 with two children by
1830. Appreciate any help.
All the best
Charlie
Hi Dolly - It seems like there are so many Clays with the same first name
that it gets more confusing every day. I show that Mitchell Clay, my
ancestor, had brother named William, born about 1733, died about 1810 in
Franklin County. Could this be your ancestor? I have no spouse or children
listed so I would appreciate any information if this is your ancestor.
Thanks, Diane Bingham

There were 3 Clay on the Miller Cherokee Roll (Rejected). I did not
check the accepted roll. They were Harriet E. (WV); Nancy A (OK);
Penelope (WV).
There is a new academic study of the roll talking about how applicants
were accepted, rejected, description of the roll, results of emigration,
etc. The table of contents of the roll is at
http://members.aol.com/rarebk
The site also has a number of Indian genealogical sources, such as the
1835 Cherokee census (posted on-line, inside a Cherokee Genealogy
Tutorial which is a great primer on how to do effective Indian genealogy
research), other indexes, and a Native American CD which appears to
contain huge amounts of Native American genealogical material. Very
fascinating.

Subject: Ann Watkins Clay from Marshall Co., MS
I am looking for information on Rebecca Ann Watkins Clay (signed her name
Ann
W. Clay on marriage certificate) who married Sidney Carpenter in Marshall
Co., Mississippi on Jan 15, 1856. There are many Clays with Watkins as
middle names so this must be significant. Also in Marshall Co, MS in the
same time frame is William H. Clay and Moranda L. Clay. William married
Maranda M. Stewart on Jan 29, 1839 in Marshall Co. I received some
information recently that this William's Parents were Thomas and Nancy Webb
Clay who were in Madison, AL. William and Maranda were divorced and he
moved
to Madison, AL and later married. He married a third time in TN. Moranda
L.
Clay married James Smith in Marshall Co., MS on May 18, 1850. This could be
the same Maranda above in which case someone misspelled her name. However,
the middle initials do not match. It seems likely that there is some
relationship between these three individuals. Ann W. could be a sister or
possibly a daughter of William. It seems most likely that these three would
be siblings.
There is a Thomas Watkins Clay in Russellville, AL. He had a son named
William H. Clay on March 15, 1843. This could be a brother of Ann W. Clay.
Many similiar names in both families. If anyone can shed a little light on
this family it would be a big help.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this mail,

Charlie,
an interesting idea, but the Welsh weren't on the move much before the early
19th Cent, although I suppose there are exceptions. If Welsh, that would
blow your height theory into a cocked hat. Find me a pure blooded Welshman
over 6 ft tall! Even 5ft 10 is rare! Who knows, but my money is still on a
Puritan from East Anglia.
Regards,
Jackie
Well done, Jackie. Now, to find out whether John was an Englishman or a
Welshman. The name would probably have been spelled differently if Welsh or
Celtic. See definition of Claymore, from the Celt word meaning "sword".
Charlie
Jackie, I wholeheartedly agree with you. There has not been any
documentation (That I know of) that John was a Sir, just speculation. Thank
you for spending your lunch hour doing research, I for one really appreciate
the effort you put into all this information.
