Hi Sandy,
I have Jesse Clay (abt 1745-1824), son WMC, marrying Marium Royal (abt
1745-abt 1852). These dates would make Marium over 100 yrs., so there is room
for scepticism here. This info was received from another subscriber and,
unfortunately, I do not have any documentary proof. However, the surname
Royal would explain a series of Royal first names which appear in Ga., Miss.,
and finally Texas in several generations.
All the best
Charlie

I have her as the d/o Richard Belcher and Mary Clay
Sandy in Florida
His first wife was Martha, perhaps Martha Ann Lewis, daughter of William
Lewis. Martha Green was the wife of his brother Charles. His second
wife was Agnes _____ ' who eloped from his bed'. Phebe, daughter of
Francis and Phebe (Cabiniss) Belcher, married his son Mitchell. Runyon
is a new one on me!

Hi All,
I've been studying this particular problem for over three years now. I even
have a whole web site devoted just to WM Clay at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9551. I'm no closer than any of
you to identifying any of WMC's wives. I can find proof of only two wives
at this time, Martha ______, who was mentioned in a land transaction in
1764, and eloping Agnes ________, mentioned in the Virginia Gazette in 1768.
I'm not even completely sure that Agnes was his wife, as I have a copy of a
land transaction involving WMC in Bedford Co., VA in 1765. I'm in the
process of examining the handwriting and signatures of the documents to
determine if they are indeed signed by the same man in an effort to track
his whereabouts through time.
What I CAN tell you is that Martha Green was not WMC's wife. She married
William's brother Charles. I am also certain that Martha Runyon was not the
wife of this William Clay, as there exists a marriage record for a William
Mitchell Clay to Martha Runyon around 1830. The William in question here
was likely dead by 1775. The Clay who married Martha Runyon is believed to
be WMC's grandson, though I can't remember the lineage right now.
Let me caution you that you WILL find a glaring error on the website that
contradicts what I just said. On the site, I make reference to information
from another researcher that turned out to be erroneous. I am guilty of
procrastination in getting the site fixed. I plan to do it very soon.
Despite that, I feel that there is a lot of useful information otherwise,
including over two dozen transcribed documents such as church records, land
transactions, arrest warrants, indentures, court records, etc. pertaining to
William and his family.

Diane, there is at present no documentation for a maiden name for William
"Mitchell" CLAY's Wife, only the first name Martha. Tim Spradling

Hi Kimberly. Your line I can help you with goes as follows (in the book
"Purse & Persons", pages 192 - 195, which Robert Clay, I told you about
earlier, thinks is accurate): John CLAY (the original immigrant to Jamestown
in 1613) = Elizabeth SOMEONE (his second Wife) ----> Charles CLAY (John's
only child that is known to have had children) = Hannah WILSON ( d/o John
WILSON, SR.) --------> Thomas CLAY = Wife may have been the Sister of a
Richard MUNNS -----> Hannah CLAY = Matthew CABANNIS. You left out Thomas'
Father Charles as you can see. And also PLEASE remember NO ONE has documented
John's Siblings or Ancestors. Hope this gives you what you need. With best
regards, Tim

Good afternoon, yes ALL Clays are invited, you do not have to connect to the
Va. Clays, who knows maybe someone will come up the missing piece to the Va.
Clay's connection back to Wales, England, Scotland???? You never know! And we
most likely do connect somehow, so come on and put your chapter in the book,
and join us in Williamsburg in 2001! Thanks, Gynger Cook
Have Clay's of Washington Co. Ga. but no documentation to show they are
related to Va. Clay's. Was not sure if all Clay families are invited to give
there infomation or not. Loraine Holmes Griffin

Yes, you can do email although I would prefer snail mail. I DO NOT WANT
GEDCOMS. As I can't import them all we would have overlapping info,
duplicate info and that won't cut it. Please don't send a gedcom. Just
DIRECT LINE from you straight back (may include siblings) but I don't want
everyone's history on the entire CLAY family.
