Dee,
I don't think that any of my line connect with yours, but there is a long
shot that my Henry Clay (b. England) might be a brother, or cousin of your
Clay. My Henry Clay's first born was James Walter Clay. He was born 13
October of 1836 in PA. I do not know the place. I do not know anything about
the immigrant, Henry Clay from England. I do have James Walter Clay and his
descendants up to 2000. The next place I have James Walter Clay showing up is
in MO. probably after the Civil War, then to Arizona, then to California
where he died.
If you can find any connection in PA, please let me know.
Thanks so much.

THE WILL OF REV. JOHN CLAY
IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN.
I, John Clay, of Hanover County, being very sick and weak, but of disposing
mind and sound memory, do make and ordain this to be my last will and
testament, in manner and form following:
Imprimis: first of all I recommend my soul to God, who gave it, hoping that
through the mediation and sufferings of my Lord and Savior, to receive free
pardon of all my sins, and my body to be decently buried at the direction of
my executor, hereafter mentioned.
Item: I desire my stock of horses and cattle may be sold and all my just
debts be paid.
Item: My will and desire is that all estate, real and personal, be kept
together until my eldest son, George Clay, shall arrive at the age of twenty
years old, except my loving wife should intermarry betwixt this this and
then. If she should marry, then in that case I desire all my estate, real and
personal, may be delivered up to my executors, except such part as I shall
hereafter mention for her use.
Item: I lend to my loving wife, Elizabeth Clay, after my son arrives to the
age above mentioned, or the time she does intermarry, if before, the use of
my plantation at Euphraim, in Henrico County, together with seven negroes,
Charles, Indian, Ceasar, left her by father's will, Sam, Paul, Chester, Bob
and Fanny during her natural life, and also two feather beds and furniture;
also a child's part of stock that may be at the time she marries, or my son
comes to the age above mentioned, and after her decease, all the above lent
to be sold and equally divided among all my children alive that day, and to
their heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son, George Clay, three negroes, to wit:
Hanover, Bob, and Ben, to him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Salley Clay, two negroes, to wit:
Sue and Frank, to her and her heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Molly Clay, two negroes, to wit:
Annaca and Little India, to her and her heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son, John Clay, two negroes, to wit: Daniel
and Arthur, to him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Henry Clay, two negroes, to wit: James
and Little Sam, to him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son, Porter Clay, to wit: Dick and Harry, to
him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my child my wife is now pregnant with, if it
should live, equal with my other children, out of my other Negroes not
mentioned above, to its heir and assigns forever.
Item: My will and desire is that all the rest of my estate shall be equally
divided amongst all my children, and if any should die before they arrive,
the males to the age of twenty years, and the female, if not married, at the
age of eighteen years, that then their part shall be equally divided amongst
the surviving children, and if any of my children should lose any of their
Negroes above mentioned in their lots, that then such loss is to be made good
out of my estate to them and their heirs forever.
Item: My will and desire is that the land I now live on, or any part thereof
may not be sold until my son, Gorge Clay, arrives at the age herein
mentioned, or until my wife intermarries; that then it may be sold by my
executors, and the money arising from the sale be equally disposed of among
my sons, or to be laid out in land at their discretion, and be equally
divided amongst my sons as they come to the age of twenty years, to them and
their heirs forever.
Item: I desire my estate may not be appraised, and do appoint my loving wife,
Elizabeth Clay, my executrix, and Colonel Nathaniel Wilerson and Mr. Richard
Chapman executors of this my last will and testament, revoking all other
wills heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 4th day of
November, 1780.

I've been searching for Wm. D. Clay and Martin B. Clay and their families in Wayne Co, MO after 1880 to no avail. I believe I may have found some of Martin's

Sarah Clay (b. abt. 1870 in MO), John Clay (B. abt 1871-1872 in MO), Fred Clay

Hi all,
I am trying to locate a will for Charles Lewis CLAY, b. 06 January 1804,
Montgomery Co., VA; d. 05 December 1884, Raleigh Co., WV; m. Ora STEWART 21
August 1830, Fayette Co., (W)VA.
I would like absolute proof that Greenville CLAY is the son of Charles Lewis
CLAY. The 1850 Raleigh Co. census does list Green as the son of Charles and
Ora CLAY, but a will would be so much better for my documentation for DAR.
Thanks for your help.

My sincerest thanks for all the kind messages of sympathy sent regarding the passing of my father, Clayton Clay. It is certainly helping me get through this difficult time.
I'm searching for information on two brothers: William D. and Martin B. Clay
who were born in Wayne Co, MO in 1844 and 1845 respectively. Cannot locate Wm after 1860 or Martin and Nancy and children after 1880. Does anybody recognize these Clays?
Thanks, Barb
Barb,
I am new to the Clay list but I send to you my condolences upon the passing
of your father. I know it is wonderful thing to share a love of family
history with your dad.
Another "Barb",
Barb Clay Adams
Libby,
I am very interested in the information you posted to the Clay-L list on Monday,
October 30, 2000 about your Clay ancestors, especially Thomas Clay and wife Anna
Powell.
I am a descendant of a Bartlett Bachelor Graves who married Anna Powell and
Thomas Clay's daughter Rhoda Clay. According to the Graves Family Association
web site, " Bachelor married Rhoda Clay, and their marriage bond was dated 28
Oct. 1784 in Amelia Co., Va. She was born about 1764 in Va., and died 22 March
1829 in Wilson Co., Tenn. She was probably a daughter of Thomas Clay and Ann
Powell. This link is established primarily on the basis that a Bachelor Graves
was a bondsman for Dicey Clay who married Charles Dunaway in Jan. 1790 in Amelia
Co., Va. Since Dicey was under legal age, Ann Clay signed her consent to the
marriage.
If one accepts these relationships, then Rhoda's lineage can be traced back 6
generations to the immigrant Clay (John, born about 1592 in England, came to Va.
prior to 1616, probably aboard the ship Treasurer). However, some of the
documentation proving the posited lineage may not be of the highest quality." Is
any of this information familiar to you? Do you know anything about these
Clays? I would appreciate any information you might have to share or any
suggestions as to where I might find some information about them.
Sincerely,
Fay Stengler

Angela,
The John Clay you are referring to is my ggg-grandfather.
I have some information on him and his descendants. We don't have
documented proof of John's parents but several of us are searching. His
parents MAY be Dennis and Ruthie Clay. I believe Dennis may listed on the
1800 Cabarrus Co.
Census. Please let me know what you find. I will get back with you
shortly.

Hi everyone!
I am looking for the parents of John clay born 1797 in Cabarrus County,
NC. His brother was Isham Clay born 1799. There were a few early John
clays in North Carolina I sure could use some help with all of them. I
found a John Clay that was born about 1690 and shows up in Chowan
County, NC in 1717 and 1721 tax lists. The other John clay I find in
1762 and 1768 tax lists for Rowan County, NC. The next early John Clay I
find in 1814 tax list for Cabarrus County who I suspect is the father of
John Clay born in 1797.
Thanks so much for any insight
