Libby,
I think we're from a different line of Clays. My line is John
Matthew
Clay (b. 1797) in Cabarrus County, NC, through his son James and Nancy Lamb.
James and Nancy were born in Jackson County, AL and migrated to Wayne County
MO about 1853-54. James is my gg-
grandfather.
Thanks for your info.

A good source of information about this couple can be found in Bell Irvin
Wiley's book, Confederate Women, published by Barnes and Noble. The second
chapter is devoted to Virginia Tunstall's life with Clement Clay and her
second husband, David Clopton, a justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
Virginia married him when she was 62 and still very active. The chapter has
several pictures/drawings of Virginia as a young girl, at middle age and
again when she was 90. Clement and Virginia were friends with Jefferson and
Varina Howell Davis (the third chapter is devoted to Mrs. Davis). The book
contains a photograph of J. Davis and CC Clay taken in the early 70's.
Virginia and Clement had no children. The 40 pages devoted to the Clays give
a good idea of their lives while he was a U.S. Senator, Confederate Senator,
his imprisonment at Fort Monroe for a year without trial and their final
years together before Clement died in 1882.

I found a marriage record for Eleazer and Elizabeth Whitehead, maybe she was
not the widow;
Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850 Mecklenburg Co., VA
Clay, Eleazar Spouse : Whitehead, Elizabeth Marriage date : 7 Jan 1789
Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV, 1728-1850 Chesterfield Co., VA
Clay, Eleazer Spouse : Newby, Phebe Marriage date : 12 Feb 1826
Thanks for writing.

You are correct about Simeon being a grandson to Thomas. I made a careless
mistake when making my post.
Charles Clay, I, 1638 - 1686 m. Hannah 1642 - 1706
Charles Clay, II, 1674 - 1765 m. Sarah Nichols?
Thomas Clay 1719 - 1787 m. Anna Powell her parents were John Powell & Mary
Talley
John Moore Clay 1757 - 1828 m. Judith Borum 1760 - after 1728
Simeon Clay 1785 - before 1860 m. Mary Lockhart 1791 - before 1854 Her father
was James Lockhart, her grandfather was also James Lockhart who changed the
name from Lockett to Lockhart.
John Green Clay 1811 - 1894 m. Margaret McCaskill 1806 - 1867
William Edward 1839 - 1902 m. Emma Cornelia Lawson 1847 - 1905
This is my line. Simeon was the one who came to Alabama. He had five sons.
Edmond Borum, Joel Lockhart, Simeon, II, Hillery P. Hillery moved on to
Lauderdale County, Mississippi and the other boys stayed in Calhoun County,
Alabama. Simeon had three girls. Susan and Nancy married Cameron brothers
and settled in Greene County, Alabama. There was another girl named
Catherine. I don't have anything on her.
I have court records from Greene County that gave me some of the dates and I
have copies of John Moore Clay's Will and estate papers. I know that Judith
was alive when he died but have no place or date of death for her. Simeon's
wife Mary was alive in 1850, but from the court records in Greene County I
know that she was dead. Simeon was at the court hearings in 1854, but he was
dead by 1860.
If this is your line I will be happy to exchange information with you. I
have met descendants of Edmond Borum and Joel Lockhart Clay. I have
communicated by email with a descendant of Hillery P. so Simeon is the only
one I lack information on is Simeon, II. I have his Civil War records. I
found in the 1900, Blount County, Alabama census a Sim W. Clay living in
Blount County. I have also seen his name in a cemetery book for Gadsden,
Alabama but have now had a chance to research him.
Hopes this helps.
Libby
I have an ancestor that the estate was never probated. It remained open for
30 years, and then was just closed by the county. I have now found out that
over $500 thousand in real estate, (farm ground) in 1952 dollars, was left
in the hands of the executor...

I found that odd as well, plus the marriage record for Eleazer is to
Elizabeth Whitehead, can't find Stepton

Do you know of any connection between Clement C. Clay (Sr) of Huntsville and our John Clay? Clement owned land in Jackson Co. as well as Madison Co. AL. I notice Russell Wm Clay named a son (b. 1849), Clement C. Clay.
Thanks for the additional information. It helps greatly.

Can't help but notice that our ancestors took their own sweet time in
settling estates. Have found several examples where the process took
several years or where it was several years before the process started.
Have no explanation as to why.

I find it unusual that Eleazer and Elizabeth would have given, as the middle name for their daughter Martha, the name "Stepton", which was the surname of Elizabeth's previous husband. Does anyone have any possible theories on why they might have used this name?

Hi Angela,
I only have this in my notes for Eleazer Clay:
"John C. Russell, son of Gen. Wm. Russell, was born in
1769, came to Muhlenberg in 1800, and died in Butler
county on Nov. 17, 1822. He first married Anna Clay,
who was a daughter of Rev. Eleazer Clay, of Virginia,
and who became the mother of all his children. She
died near Greenville, Nov. 3, 1817. His second wife
was Sarah Allen."
I believe I found this in the Otto Arthur Rothert's
book "A History of Muhlenburg, County". I have no
further information on him or where he died.

HI!
I am reseraching the earliest Clay's in St. Charles County and St.
Genevieve county missouri. I could sure use some help on this I pretty
much know about Jeremiah Clay but wondered if any of his brothers ended
up in these counties and what the aprox death dates would be for these
men. i am still looking for the father of my solomon clay who was born
in NC and died in 1833 in Perry county/St. Genevieve County Missouri
-His oldest son was named John Henry Clay. I am hoping that I can
somehow tie him into the Jeremiah branch as Solomon was living in Perry
County in 1800.
Thanks so much for all your help!
