Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Does anyone on the list have any deeds/wills/probate papers for Richard Clay
b. 1718 NH or for his father Richard b ENG died somehere in the East? I have
found on the York county site a listing of court cases, a bunch for Richard
Jr. and have secured a deed from 1797 to Benjamin Elwell. The court
personnel will not look up the other deeds for Richard although they say
there are many. Before I hire someone to do that, just wanted to see what
might be out there already. Dorothy

John and everyone:
Rootsweb gives the list managers of their mailing lists the option to set
replies to go to the list. This question was raised about a year ago also
but I can't find my message of that time. I have chosen to have replies go
the list because the idea is the sharing of information. If someone makes a
posting in which several people have an interest and the reply only goes to
the person who posts, then either the rest of the interested people miss out
on the reply or there is a constant stream of messages essentially asking
responders to reply to the list. Because there is not a high volume of
messages on this list, at least to date it has worked well.
I would ask everyone on the list to remember that messages are archived by
mailing list at Rootsweb - please be sure that what you send to the list is
something you are not troubled by having available to anyone who may look at
the archives.

On two webpages, I found that other descendants of my John Clay
1794-1840, son of Matthias Clay 1773-1840, have given John the middle
name of Christian. None of the records that I have seen as the estate &
marriage records, gravestone or a published family history make no
mention of a midddle name. I have emailed these other two descendants
and one did not respond at all and the other said they saw it some place
and that he was "close" to his uncle Chrisitan Clay.
Can anyhone shed any light on this question of a middle name?

There is a strange feature of this list which I find quite unusual.
When I reply to someone privately, I find my message being sent to the list.
This has now happened twice. Why is this so? (if anyone will talk to me,
that is).

Hi Nancy,
First, my name is Poxon, not Faxon. In your hurry to yell at me you could
at least take the time to check who you are yelling at. My response in
other respects is set out below;

Please read a dictionary and check your use of the word 'hypocritical' in
relation to the time frame of events, then confirm for me that hypocritical
is still the correct word to use. If nothing else, lets stick to correct
English. I realize this is a harsh imposition an American, but, lets stick
to correct use of English.
> I wonder why YOU did not just send her a private message and one to the

I meant to send it privately to her and was quite concerned that I had
accidentally sent my message to the list.

No, it doesn't. When I can do something for a person in physical distress,
I will.

> Hello Folks,
> I want to veer off the subject for a long minute.
My reaction to this message has nothing to do with religion. I
have been on several surname lists where one of the frequent
contributors had a medical problem and the topic of prayers or
wishes for recovery came up. In those cases the unfortunate
person was known to all of the long time subscribers and the
issue was relevant to the individual list. No problem.
This latest message is different. There must be hundreds of
surname and local genealogy lists with hundreds or thousands of
owners and subscribers with more thousands of relatives, many of
whom are certainly in poor health. If all surname lists receive
prayer requests for sick people, and all of those touch off a
blizzard of responses arguing about still more off-topic
subjects, then the usefulness of the surname lists is lost.
Surely there are prayer request lists and medical topic lists
where this message belongs. There are even a few surname lists
where it might be appropriate. If the people in question are
not connected somehow to the Clay list, then the message was off
topic.
There but for the grace of God go all of us, but the message
was still off topic.
Please don't veer off the subject.
John Cason
Dear John and list members,
Please, do not let us get into disagreements over this. I certainly
agree with John that he has the right to express his opinion and I respect
his opinion. Conversely, I request the same sanction from him and any
others who are on this list. We all have different beliefs and creeds and
all are necessary if we are to understand ourselves and our ancestors.
I appreciate the prayers (and non-prayers) offered in response to my
request and I know that Cher and her Dad will too.
Please send any further comments privately to me so that the list can
carry on with its business of the day.
Thanks,
Jean

Folks, if you have a problem or complaint with any list you happen to
subscribe to, why not just send it to the list owner/webmaster and at

Mr. Faxon,
Since you took exception to a fellow genealogist asking for prayer
for another human being, then YOU should not have been so hypocritical
in your response.
I wonder why YOU did not just send her a private message and one to the
webmaster & listowner?
I do hope that your attitude does not extend to anyone else you come

Mr. Poxon:
You seem to feel quite free to express your personal beliefs. Why do you not
think others should have that same right?
Having lost my mother to brain cancer 3 months and 14 days ago, I can tell you
that there aren't enough people in the entire world to say "I'm sorry" or to be
there for you in the time of need when you lose the person who brought you into
this world.
I don't know what "religious" means to you. I think of myself more as
"spiritual" than religious. I do believe in God, though. But, even if you
don't believe in God, what's wrong with you that you couldn't extend concern and
compassion for somebody in need? And, even if you can't do that, why criticize
others who want to do so?
I find your remarks so hypocritical, particularly on this listserve We are
people who are looking for our connectedness, our roots. When it comes down to
it, we're ALL related, and we should care about each other.
I can assume that, based on your comments when you're in need and facing a
crisis with your loved ones you won't let us know. FINE. Go through it, like I
have done, and let me know how it goes. For now, though, I can tell you that I
had Protestants, Jews, and Catholics pray for my family and my mother. And,
guess what?? It didn't hurt a bit!!! I do even know some agnostics who showed
their concern at my loss.
I hope you have gotten my point. If you're worried about people caring about
others, get off these kinds of lists. The participants here are
"people-people." If you don't like what's said, delete it and shut up.

Dear Jean,
I would like offer my prayers for the Adams family. Many times in our lives
my family and I have been grateful for the prayers of others.
If there is anyone out there that does not approve of these "religious
sentiments", then they are truly in need of our prayers.
As Shari and Sharon said, if you are offended, delete it. No one is forcing
you to offer a prayer, but do not try to force your "agnostic or atheistic
sentiments" on us.
This country was founded on the belief that everyone is entitled to Freedom
of Religion and Freedom of Speech, even Mr.. Poxon. But that does not give
him the right to be rude when someone is in need of the prayers of others.
We too are entitled to Freedom of Religion and Speech.
Mr. Poxon may believe that "a large percentage of people on this list would
similarly object"; I believe that a large percentage will join us in praying
for the Adams family. I know my family and I will.
If I cannot freely say the name of God on this forum without someone being
rude and "sanctimonious", then I don't care to be here. Mr. Poxon can just
talk to himself.
God Bless
Bobbie
