Hi all...
I was wondering if anyone had the index for the 1850 IN Census? I am
looking for John Shaw, who may have been in Putnam, Vermillion, Clay, Vigo,
Fountain, or Montgomery Co. area. John Shaw was born ca 1794 and his family
was living in neighboring Parke Co., IN. I didn't find John Shaw in Parke
Co., IN, and according to Bible records, he didn't die until 1855, so I
believe that he was likely living in a neighboring county. Thanks very much
for any help. Sincerely, Barry Collett
Does anyone have any info on Marshall Clay. He was murdered in Logan, WV in
1935. He apparently was a rather wealthy man and lost his life because of it.
He was my Great Grandfather but died before my mother was born so I don't
have a lot of info on him. If any one can help in any way....... Please let
me know.
Thanks,
Mango
Does anyone have more information on a
William Clay age 22 in 1881 census
Alton, Staffor, England
Mother maybe Mabel Clay of Belper, Derby England?

Hi Betty.
We descend from the same line. My gggrandfather was James Clay (1770-1830) b.
Chesterfield, Va. , d. St. Charles County, Mo. He was a brother of Jeremiah
Walker Clay. Their parents were James Clay b. 1730 Hanover Co., Va., d. 1790
Halifax Co., Va. and Margaret Muse b.1737 Chesterfield Co., Va., d. 1832
Amite, Miss.
Joel,
I noticed that your Clay line was in PA in the early 1800's do you happen to
have a James Clay who married an ?? Schlonaker? He was born in PA in the
early 1800's (no date), their daughter Elmira was born 31 May 1846. Given
her date of birth (do not know any information on siblings) I have James
born about 1810 - 1828.

Barbara,
I too am descendants of Johan Nicholas Klee and Lisa Margarettha Staudt. I
went to your webcite but could not find the info you mentioned. Please
advise me what I need to do. Thank you.
Sharon
I am a direct descendant of Johan Nicholas Klee and Lisa Margaretha Staudt
of Pennsylvania. My Grandmother Inman, Adelia Viola Clay, was the daughter
of Levi Clay and Mary E. Stillians of Adair, Iowa. Levi was the son of John
Clay (1794-1844); John was the son of Mathias Clay (1773-1840); Mathias Clay
was the son of Christian Klee and grandson of Johan Nicholas Klee.
I have a new website that may be of interest to Johan Nicholas Klee
descendants. If you are interested, click on the URL to my home page in my
signature and follow instructions on the home page. My grandmother had many
pictures of the Clays (of John and of Mathias, too), and I am beginning to
put those pictures on the website. Hope to see you there.

<< Tim,
Thanks for your interest in my website. First, let me say that the only
documentation I have is from published sources, Clifford Charles Clay's
chart
prepared probably in the early 1950's, and WWW information including this
Clay List. I know from looking at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6025/clay.htm and reading this list
that the early Clay genealogy is not proven and probably has been
hopelessly
confused by early genealogists.
I used the name John Thomas Clay to tie in to Clifford Clay's chart, but
your
email has caused me to change his name to John (Thomas?) Clay(e) and change
his wife's name to "Unknown" for the time being until I can check further.
What documentation do you have that John married Elizabeth as a second
wife?
I have a footnote by Rev. S. O. Southall that Anne may have married John
Wall
after John Clay died (actually, as you will see below, Anne died before
John and Elizabeth, his second Wife, married Capt. John WALL after John CLAY
died sometime before 1657) , which would imply that Anne outlived John. (See
"Some
Notes on the Clay Family," contributed by Rev. Stephen O. Southall,
"Genealogies of Virginia Families," Vol. II, Indexed by Robert Barnes
(1981),
from VA Magazine of History and Biography, p. 79, footnote 3.)

Hi Betty. Your right, the CLAY ancestral line beyond John CLAY who
immigrated to Jamestown is NOT proven, but unfortunetely is reported often
w/o that disclaimer.
Proof of John CLAY (marrying after his first Wife Anne had died) Elizabeth
SOMEONE (who later married John WALL after John CLAY died before 1657), is in
"Purse and Persons" p. 192. The information in that well known publication
states John WALL conveyed two ewes to his Son - In - Law (Stepson), Charles
CLAY, in 1660 (Charles City Co. Order Book 1655-65, p. 245) .
Charles was the Only Child of John CLAY and his two Wives that is known to
have had Children.
As far as John CLAY's middle name Thomas, it resulted from a researcher in
this Century transcribing the signature by mark of a John CLAY of Isle of
Wright Co., written John I CLAY, as John T. CLAY. He decided the misread
letter must stand for Thomas and that it was the signature of John CLAY the
immigrant, thereby creating John Thomas CLAY. The "I" was merely an old form
of "j" - his mark for John. Middle names were almost unknown then except for
the occasional "alias" double name, which almost always indicated bastardy.
